Mein neuestes Werk kommt auf dem Foto recht unspektakulär daher (grau halt …), gefällt mir aber in Natura sehr gut. Der Pullover basiert auf dem Saddle-Shoulder receipe von Elizabeth Zimmermann.

My newest work looks quite unspectacular on the picture (well … grey …), but I like it very much. The sweater is based on the saddle shoulder receipe by Elizabeth Zimmermann.

Für diesen Pullover habe ich diesen hier geribbelt, denn der hat mir nicht gefallen. Stattdessen stricke ich nun wieder einen eigenen Entwurf. Dies ist British Knight II/Celtic Warrior, und ich frage mich, was als nächstes kommt? Der Waliser Warlord? Der Surrey-Söldner, der Lincolnshire-Landsknecht?

For this sweater I frogged thisone because I didn’t like it. I’m knitting my own design instead. This is Brithis Knight II aka Celtic Warrior, and I’m asking myself: what comes next? The Welsh Warlord? The Surrey Mercenary Soldier? The Lincolnshire Lansquenet? We’ll see …

Nachdem es hier bereits eine Vorschau der Details gab, nun der fertige Pullover: British Knight.

Inspiriert wurde ich durch die Frage, wie eine weibliche Waage im Mittelalter wohl ein Kettenhemd gestalten würde. Das Design beruht auf dem Sattelschulter-Pullover von Elizabeth Zimmermann.

I was inspired by the question how a female libra would design a byrnie in the mediaeval times. The design is based on the saddle shoulder sweater by Elizabeth Zimmermann.

Nun sehe ich, was den grauen Pullover aus Naturwolle angeht, auch wieder etwas klarer: Er wird ganz schlicht, bis auf einen Zopf auf Ärmel und Schultern.

Now I know how I’ll knit the gray sweater. It will be very plain, except one small braid on sleeves and shoulders.

Die Idee stammt aus dem Buch In the Hebrides von Alice Starmore, jedoch stricke ich ihn nicht in Einzelteilen, wie die Anleitung vorsieht (bäääh!), sondern in einem Stück, als Sattelschulterpullover, wie unserer Meisterin aller Pulloverklassen, Ms. Elizabeth Zimmermann, uns lehrte.

The idea comes from the book In the Hebrides by Alice Starmore, but I don’t knit it flat and in pieces, as the instruction suggests, but in the round as saddle shoulder sweater, as the champion of all sweater classes, Ms. Elizabeth Zimmermann, taught us.

Wir alle lieben exotische Garne und bestellen sie auch, oft aus Übersee. Yak-Garn, Possum-Garn, Sariseide, Garn mit Metallkern usw. Dabei vergessen wir oft, dass es auch hier Tolles zu entdecken gibt, was auch daran liegt, dass unsere Wollquellen dergleichen nicht führen.

We all love exotic yarns and some of us order some of them, mostly from overseas. There is yarn from yaks or possums, sari silk, yarn with metal core and so on. But we often forget that there are great yarns from here as well, and one of the reasons is that they are not available in our yarn stores.

Mutter Jinx und ich waren neulich im Freilichtmuseum Kiekeberg zum Kunsthandwerker-Weihnachtsmarkt. Es war eine trübe Veranstaltung, so trübe, dass ich keine Fotos gemacht habe. Aber im Museumsshop wurde ich fündig: Dort gab es ein wundervolles Strickgarn aus naturbelassener Schafwolle, ungefärbt. Es gibt dieses Material in Naturweiß, Dunkelbraun und eben in Grau. Es verstrickt sich einfach großartig und ergibt ein sehr schönes Maschenbild. Dazu ist der Preis auch noch günstig. Was will man mehr?

Mother Jinx and I went to the Kiekeberg museum again, for the Christmas fair of crafters. It was horrid, so horrid that I refused to take any pictures. But in the museum shop I found something very special: There was a wonderful knitting yarn for sale, made of pure wool, undyed and without any chemical treatment. It’s available in cream, dark brown, and gray. Knitting with it is a pleasure, and the stitches come out just beautifully. The price is very reasonable. It’s just great.

… der erste der Pullover aus den Garnen, die ich von der Insel Skye mitgebracht habe. Ich habe diesen klassischen Raglan so abgewandelt, dass ich ihn in einem Stück, nach dem Prinzip von Elizabeth Zimmermann gestrickt habe. Er passt einfach perfekt und wurde sofort zu einem neuen Lieblingsstück.

… the first sweater I knitted from the yarns I brought as a souvenir from the Isle of Skye. I modified the pattern for this classic raglan so I could knit it seamless, following the instructitons given by Elizabeth Zimmermann. It fits just perfectly, and I can tell I have a new favourite sweater.

Der Pullover ist aus einem wunderbaren rosenfarbenen Kaschmir-Angora-Lammwolle-Mix gestrickt, das mit Cochenille handgefärbt wurde. Die Farbe ist im Original einfach einmalig. Wie Herr Jinx nicht verabsäumte, zu bemerken, enthält der Pullover auch 30 Millionen toter Insekten.

The sweater is knitted from a wonderful rose-coloured cashmere-angora-lambswool blend which was handdyed with cochinelle. It’s an absolutely unique shade, but Mr. Jinx of course mentioned that it containes at least 30 Mio. dead insects.

Obwohl es ein schlichtes Modell ist, weist es einige liebevolle Details auf, wie die Bündchen und die Zöpfe an den Seiten und am Ärmel.

Although the sweater is rather plain it has some elaborate details, like the cuffs and the cables at the sides of body and sleeves.

Ich habe die Erfahrung gemacht, dass bei Pullovern nach dem Zimmermann-Prinzip der kritische Punkt überwunden ist, wenn alles auf eine Nadel geschoben und in einem Stück zuende gestrickt wird. Dann ist zwar noch längst das Ende nicht erreicht, aber irgendwie schon in Sicht, und außerdem sind die ständigen Abnahmen psychologisch günstig.

Following Elizabeth Zimmermann’s instructions for knititng a raglan sweater, I made the experience that one overcomes the critical point after putting all pieces on one circular needle. Of course this is not the end, and there is still much to do, but the constant decreases have a very positive effect on the knitter’s staying power, in a psychological way.

Dies ist der Pullover Gabrielle; das Kit habe ich aus Skye mitgebracht, und ich zeige es in einem fortgeschrittenenerem Stadium. Obwohl es mein dritter Zimmermann-Pullover ist, irritert mich das Rüschige nach wie vor, also der Moment, wenn alles auf eine Nadel gebracht wurde und das Gestrick sich dort staut und dabei eben Rüschen bildet. Ich fühle mich immer, als würde ich eines dieser eigenartigen Teile mit Carmen-Ausschitt  (wie gruselig …) stricken. Glücklicherweise hält das Gefühl nicht lange an.

This is the Gabrielle sweater; I brought the kit as a souvenir from the Isle of Skye, and I made some progress. Although it’s the third “Zimmermann-sweater”, I still feel slightly bemused after bringing the body and the sleeves on one circ and seeing it accumulate there in ruffles. Then I always feel as if I was knitting one of these weird garments with a flamenco neckline. I’m happy this feeling doesn’t last.

Pullover stricken ist toll, Ärmel stricken ist blöd. Oder so ähnlich. Allerdings gibt es eine Ausnahme: Es ist erträglich, wenn man alles auf eine Nadel nimmt, um das Teil dann in einem Stück fertigzustellen.

I lover knitting sweaters, but I hate to do the sleeves, at least a bit. But there is an exception: it’s o.k. to knit sleeves when putting all parts on one long needle to finish the garment in one.

Dieser Pullover sollte eigentlich nur am Anfang in Runden gestrickt werden und dann – ab Armloch – flach und in Einzelteilen, die dann zusammengenäht werden sollen. Aber nicht mit mir. Ich werde die Anleitung modifizieren und schön alles in einem Stück stricken, wie E. Zimmermann es uns lehrte. Da es ein Raglan ist, gibt es da auch überhaupt kein Problem.

Actually, the instructions for this sweater call for knititng the lower part of the body in the round, but splitting it after reaching the sleeve holes and finishing it flat – as one had to do the sleeves. But I won’t, no way. I’ll modify the instructions and knit everything in the round, just as our master, Ms. E. Zimmermann taught us. Since it’s a raglan sweater, there will be no problem at all.

Vor dem Urlaub strickte ich phantasie- und ideenlos herum, doch nach Skye ist alles anders. Ich bin doch mehr der Typ für die Insel, denke ich.

Before I went on holidays I was knitting without any ideas and inspiration, but after I came back things changed. I think I’m more the type for the British Isles.

Von meinen Wollkäufen habe ich berichtet, und ich musste natürlich auch gleich anstricken. Zunächst ist der etwas leichtere Pullover Gabrielle dran, ein schlichter Raglan mit ein paar Zöpfen, der in der Runde gestrickt wird. Das Material ist Luxury DK von Shilasdair (Kaschmir, Angora, Lammwolle), das Modell stammt auch von dort, es ist das erste von den beiden Kits, die ich dort kaufte. Gefärbt ist das Garn mit Cochinelle.

I visited Skye (Inner Hebrides) and brought some yarn from there, and of course I had to start knitting in an instant. The first project is a lighter sweater called Gabrielle, a plain raglan with a few cables, knitted in the round. The yarn is Luxury DK from Shilasdair (cashmere, angora, lambswool), the pattern comes from there, too, it’s the first of the two kits purchased. The yarn is naturally dyed with cochinelle.
