Es ist ja immer schön, etwas Neues zu lernen, und so habe ich mich aufgerafft und die traditionelle schwedische Technik des “Twined Knitting” gelernt. Das ist eine Art Schreckgespenst für manche Stricker, denn wenn man ungeübt ist, dauert es eine gefühlte Ewigkeit, und man kämpft mit verdrehten Fäden. Das Ergebnis ist jedoch durchaus überzeugend.

It’s always nice to learn something new, and so I pulled myself together and absorbed the traditional Swedish technique called “Twined Knitting”. It’s a kind of bogeyman for some knitters since it takes forever (if you have no practice), and you fight with the distorted threads after every round.

Obwohl ich mit zwei Farben begonnen habe, da es für den Anfang leichter ist, die Fäden auseinanderzuhalten, ist es keine Technik, die der Farbstrickerei zuzuordnen ist: Die meisten historischen Strickstücke sind monochrom. Gearbeitet wird allerdings immer mit zwei Fäden. Wer Fair Isle beidhändig beherrscht, kann sich in Maßen freuen, denn es nützt zwar nicht direkt etwas, aber man hat wenigstens das “Throwing” drauf.

Although I started my test project with two colours, Twined Knitting is not a colour knitting technique, it’s just easier to deal with two different colours in the beginning for not mixing up the working threads. Most of the items are done with just one colour. It’s worked with two strands of yarn, and if you are one of the lucky persons who know how to do two-handed stranded knitting, you may be at least a bit happy. It doesn’t really help, but the “throwing” is sort of familiar to you.

Die Rückseite offenbart den Unterschied zur Fair-Isle-Strickerei. Beim “Twined Knitting” lernt man zunächst einen der speziellen Anschlagsarten, dann windet man die Fäden beim Stricken bei jeder Masche umeinander. Das ergibt ein Gestrick mit besonderen Eigenschaften:

  • Das Gestrick ist wirklich dick und fest, es steht praktisch von selbst. In dieser Technik gearbeitete Socken dürften fast Stahlkappenschuhe ersetzen (Spaß …).
  • Es ist eingeschränkt elastisch und sehr formstabil.
  • Die Texturen sind sehr plastisch; das gilt sowohl für rechte Maschen als auch für Strukturmuster

The back clearly shows the difference to stranded knitting. First you’ll have to learn one of the special cast-on techniques (well, you don’t have to if you don’t want, but it’s sort of part of the deal), and while you knit you wind the strands around each other. This makes a fabric with special qualities:

  • the fabric is really, really tight and rather thick, it almost can stand alone if you put it somewhere. Socks worked in twined knitting might almost be a proper substitute for safety boots (just kidding …).
  • It’s quite elastic and keeps it shape
  • the textures are very elaborate, for stockinette as well as for knit-purl patterns.

Twined Knitting ist hierzulande fast unbekannt. Wie fast alle traditionellen Stricktechniken hat es seinen Ursprung bei der arbeitenden Bevölkerung, und zwar bei der eines Landes mit sehr, sehr kalten Wintern. Es gibt nicht sehr viel Literatur, mir sind drei Bücher bekannt, die ich unten nenne.

Twined Knitting is almost unknown in Germany. Like most traditional knitting techniques its origin lies with hard working people, namely those from a country with very, very cold winters. There are only a few books which describe this technique. I know only three which I name below.

Brigitta Dandanell/Ulla Danielsson: Twined Knitting. A Swedish Folk Craft Technique, 1984 – wird oft als das beste Buch genannt, ist aber leider vergriffen. Die Beschreibungen sind gut (ich habe sie verstanden), und es besitzt einen ausführlichen historischen Teil. Die Projekte sind attraktiv und orientieren sich an traditionellen Strickstücken. - It’s often called the best book, but it’s out of print. The instructions are well written (at least I understood what to do), and it has elaborate chapters about the history of this technique. The projects are attractive and inspired by historical items.

Laura Farson: New Twists on Twined Knitting, 2010 – Eine Neuerscheinung, bei der meist mit dickeren Garnen gearbeitet wird. Nur Accessoires – A new publication, most projects are worked with thicker yarns. Accessoires only.

Anne-Maj Ling: Two-end knitting, 2002 – Die Technik wird ausführlich beschrieben. Viele zweifarbige Projekte mit anspruchsvollen Mustern.
