Es sind nicht immer die auffälligen Projekte, die das Zeug zum Lieblingsstück haben, gerade die einfachen sind oft die, die man jahrelang mit sich herumschleppt. So wie dieser Pullover, der auf dem Bild nach gar nichts aussieht.

It’s not always the extraordinary projects which become all-time favourites, specially the simple ones are carried along year after year. Like this sweater which doesn’t look much on a picture.

Was man auf dem Foto ebenfalls nicht sieht, ist die ausgesprochen interessante Konstruktion. Es ist ein Sattelschulter-Pullover, der von oben gestrickt wurde, man beginnt mit beiden Sätteln und fügt die durch das Anschlagen weiterer Maschen zu einer Runde zusammen. Dann strickt man ihn ganz normal bis zum Bündchen und fügt die Ärmel (natürlich ebenfalls strickend) an.

What you can’t see on the picture as well is the really interesting way of construction. It’s a saddle-shoulder sweater knitted from the top. It’s started with the two saddle patches which are brought together by casting on more stitches. After this it’s knitted in the round, and finally the sleeves are attached (of course knitted, not sewn).

Das Material gehört zu meiner Lieblingswolle: Arangarn von den Shetland-Inseln, das sich beim Waschen und durch das Tragen leicht zusammenfilzt. Das macht den Pullover dichter, auch gegen den Wind.

The material is one of my favourites: Aran weight yarn from the Shetland Isles. It felts slightly when washed and worn, and this makes the fabric a more dense and windproof.

Ich habe ihn extra-groß mit viel Luft gestrickt, damit ich noch etwas darunterziehen kann, wenn es kalt ist. Ach ja, als Frau, die gern Männersachen trägt, hat man es doch viel einfacher als umgekehrt, nicht wahr? Man kann cross-dressen, und es merkt kein Schwein.

I knitted this extra-large with a lot of ease because I want to wear something under it when it’s cold outside. Well, as a woman who loves wearing mens’ clothes life is much easier than the other way round, isn’t it? You can be a cross-dresser without anybody noticing it.

Dies wird ein Pullover für den Sommer, gestrickt nach einer Anleitung für Sattelschulterpullover von oben. Ich verwende stilecht ein Arangarn von den Shetland Woolbrokers, hier bekannt als Jamieson & Smith, und zwar Soft Spun Yarn. Wobei damit eher schottisch-weich und nicht etwa Merino-Angora-Alpaka-Kaschmir-weich gemeint ist.

This will become a summer sweater, a seamless top-down saddleshoulder one. I use – always in proper style – an aran weight yarn from the Shetland Woolbrokers (in Germany known as Jamieson & Smith). It’s soft spun, but this rather means “Scottish soft”, not merino-angora-alpaca-cashmere-soft.

Die Jacke Elsewhere ist fertig, gestrickt aus dem wunderbaren Noro Silk Garden und in hippieartiger Farbigkeit. Ich habe mich entschieden, das Garn einfach die Arbeit tun zu lassen und keinen Versuch zu machen, den Farbverlauf zu beeinflussen.

The Elsewhere cardigan is done, knitted from the wonderful Noro Silk Garden in a hippie-esque colouring. I decided to let the yarn do the job without interfering with the colour gradients.

Es ist im Prinzip ein Raglan von oben gestrickt, mit einem unregelmäßigen Rippenmuster an der Passe , an den Vorderteilen und den Ärmeln. Gestrickt wird es in einem Stück.

It’s basically a raglan knitted in one piece and from the top, embellished with some ribs in the yoke section, the front panels and the sleeves.

Knöpfe oder Reißverschlüsse sind nicht vorgesehen, wenn man die Jacke schließen will, verwendet man eine Nadel oder Fibel.

Buttons or zippers are not meant to be used with this construction, if you want to close the cardigan, you’ll have to use a shawl pin or a fibula.

Es ist nicht alles Lace und modular hier, auch der RVO ist gewachsen. Hier fehlen nur noch die Ärmel und die Blende am Ausschnitt. Ein wenig langweilig zu arbeiten, aber hübsch. Das Muster ist übrigens der Labyrinth Sweater aus den Stitchdiva Studios, gestrickt in Rowan Summer Tweed in einem für mich absolut unwiderstehlichen meliertem Blau.

It’s not all modular or lacy here, the raglan knitted from the top grew a good amount, too. I just have to knit the sleeves and the neckline finishing. It’s a bit boring to knit, all stockinette, but I like the results. The pattern is the Labyrinth sweater by Stitchdiva Studios, knitted in Rowan Summer Tweed in a tweedy medium blue which is absolutely irresistible to me.

Nun habe ich mir genug Zeit mit Klein- und Mittelprojekten vertrieben; es ist wieder Zeit für etwas Ernsthaftes. Dies wird mal ein RVO, gestrickt aus Rowan Summer Tweed in der Farbe Cape, die mich total begeistert. Ich hoffe, er geht einigermaßen schnell, ganz im Gegensatz zu den Persian Poppies III, die ich ebenfalls begonnen habe.

Now I clowned around enough with small and medium size projects, and it’s time again for something more serious. This will become a raglan, knitted from the top. I chose Rowan Summer Tweed for it, and the colour is cape which I really like. I hope I’ll be done rather soon with it, because the Persian Poppies sweater will take very, very long.

Ich hänge ja auch eher der These an, dass Maschenproben für Feiglinge sind, aber manchmal geht es nicht anders, z. B. bei Zimmermann-Pullovern oder dem Raglan-von-oben-Prinzip. Ich stricke jedoch eher Maschenproben-Miniaturen. Und diesmal mussten es gleich zwei sein.

I think swatches are for knitting cowards, but sometimes I have no choice, e. g. for Zimmermann sweaters or raglan ones knitted from the top. But when I have to do so, I always knit sort of swatch miniatures, but this time I had to knit two of them.

Ich bin entschlossen, meinem Felted-Tweed-Vorrat energisch zu Leibe zu rücken und habe zur Entspannung eine Maschenprobe gestrickt. Auf der Banderole ist Nadelstärke 3,5 – 4 angegeben. 4 kam mir ein wenig groß vor, also versuchte ich mein Glück mit Nadelstärke 3,5. Das Resultat überzeugte mich überhaupt nicht, denn obwohl das Gestrick gut aussieht, ist es beim Anfassen viel zu locker, es dehnt sich wie Gummi, kein Stand, keine Spannung, nichts. Also wiederholte (grrrr!) ich die Maschenprobe (nochmal grrr) mit Nadelstärke 3, und das gefällt mir viel besser. Ich will ja nun auch keine Jacke, die sich beim Anziehen so dehnt, dass sie zum Netzhemd wird.

I’m strong-willed to reduce my Felted Tweed stash and started knitting a swatch with it, for relaxing a bit from my fair isle knitting. Following the yarn’s label, it calls for 3,5 or 4 mm needles. 4 mm seems to be a bit large for this rather thin yarn, so I gave 3,5 mm a try. It’s not that I didn’t like the result from the look, but when touching it I found it too loose, and there is to few tension in it for wearing a garment knitted with this needle size. So I had to repeat the swatch, this time I used 3 mm needles, and this I like much better. I don’t want a cardi which mutates into a mesh vest when worn.

Nun war ich ganz froh, mal NICHT mit Nadelstärke 3 stricken zu müssen, aber: zu früh gefreut!

I would have been glad NOT to knit with needles No. 3, but the yarn decided different.
