Und wieder was fertig: Der Milkweed Shawl von Laura Chau mit dem wunderbaren Garn von lollipop.yarns. Die Farben kommen mal wieder nicht richtig raus, und gespannt ist er auch noch nicht. Ein Abschlussfoto nebst technischen Details folgt.

Of course the colours don’t behave in the pic as they are supposed to do, and the shawl is neither washed nor blocked. Another pic will follow after I’ve done so, and the technical details as well.

Ich frage mich, ob es einen Zusammenhang zwischen ungeliebtem Garn und den Fehlern gibt, die man beim Stricken macht. Vor einiger Zeit habe ich mit dem Milkweed Shawl begonnen, einem einfachen, kleinen, freundlichen Projekt. Ich wählte ein Wollmeise-Sockenclub-Garn aus, das mir im Strang gut gefiel, und legte los. Obwohl das Ding wirklich einfach zu stricken ist und man sich gut an dem Muster orientieren kann, machte ich Fehler, die ich zu korrigieren versuchte, was gar nicht schön aussah (eine Krankheit der Lacestrickerei), und schließlich gab ich auf.

I’m asking myself whether there is a coherence between mistakes one makes while knitting and yarn one doesn’t like. Some time ago I started the Milkweed Shawl, a simple, small and friendly project. I chose a skein of merino from the Wollmeise Sock Club deliveries and started rather optimistically. Althouth this is really an easy knit where the pattern shows the way, I made several mistakes I tried to correct, and this made things worse. It didn’t look well at all (the lace knitting’s desease), and finally I gave up.

Neben den nur unvollkommen korrigierten Fehlern gab es noch einen anderen Grund: Das Garn gefiel mir nicht, zumindest nicht für dieses Projekt. Die Farbe war zu schreiend, zu laut, zu wenig delikat. Nun habe ich den zweiten Versuch gestartet, diesmal mit einem Strang Blue (Faced Leicester) von lollipop.yarns, und siehe da: Ich stricke das Teil ganz selbstverständlich und völlig fehlerlos (bisher wenigstens).

Besides the imperfectly corrected mistakes there was another reason for abandoning this project: I simply didn’t like the yarn, at least not for this project. The colour was too crude, too superficial, not delicate enough. Now I started the second attempt, and this time I used a skein of Blue (Faced Leicester) from lollipop.yarns. And what happened? I’m knitting this very light-hearted and completely flawless (until now).

Meine Crazy-Lace-Stola, wie ich sie momentan im Kopf habe, besteht aus drei, fließend ineinander übergehenden Musterabschnitten (ich hoffe zumindest, dass sie das tun werden), und dies ist der erste.

My Crazy Lace stole, as I have it in mind, consists of three parts which will blend harmonically into each other (at least, I hope so), and this is the firstone.

Dies sind zwei Details, links erkennt man die Perlen, die in diesem Abschnitt nur sparsam eingesetzt werden. recht ist der Rand zu erkennen, der eine Art Gestaltungsspielwiese ergibt, wenn ich meine perverse Idee umsetze (und momentan visualisiere ich das Ding nunmal so).

These are two details. On the left you can see a few beads which will be used sparsely in this part of the stole. On the right is a picture of the border which is sort of a playground for the weird idea I have in mind (if I’ll realize this, what I don’t know yet, but at the moment I visualize it this way).

Und wenn ich die Idee realisiere, wird es mit diesem Garn geschehen.

And if I’m going to realize it, it will be with this yarn.

Das mit dem “freien Geist”, der Inspiration und dem freeformenden Lacestricken ist gar nicht so einfach, wenn man Lacestrickerei immer mit dem Abzählen endloser Charts assoziiert (Herr Jinx nennt so etwas übrigens “das dröge Bohren dicker Bretter”). Aber es hilft ja nichts, irgendwie muss man anfangen. Und die Crazy-Lace-Technik ist ja sehr vergebend, sodass man nur den inneren Zensor überwinden muss.

It’s not so easy to let one’s spirit floating freely, getting some inspiration, and starting with the freeform lace knitting when you’re the one who associated lace knitting with endless countings of huge charts. But somehow I have to get started, and the Crazy Lace technique is rather forgiving, and so I just have to overcome my inner censorship.

Ich habe mich entschieden, völlig ohne Charts und völlig wild zu stricken, aber nicht ohne Plan. Das Ergebnis soll von absichtsvoller Zufälligkeit sein, und ich habe natürlich im Kopf, wie das Ganze aussehen soll. Desweiteren habe ich mich entschieden, quasi thematisch zu stricken; inspiriert von dem Song “Purple Rain” von Prince (oder wie immer der sich jetzt gerade nennt).

I decided to knit without any charts and completely wild, but not without a clue. The desired result is supposed to be of intentional randomness, and of course I have a picture in mind how the whole thing will look (once). Furthermore I decided to chose a theme, inspired by the song “Purple Rain” by Prince (or however he calls himself at the moment).

Das bedeutet, dass dies ein relativ dramatisches Stricktück wird, das gewissermaßen den Geist der Achtziger atmet. Es darf also bombastisch, kitschig, übertrieben usw. sein.

This means, of course, that this is going to be a rather dramatic garment, with will breathe the spirit of the eighties. It may very well be bombastic, kitschy, exaggerating.

Das brachte mich natürlich zur Frage der Garnauswahl. Das das Garn lila sein würde, ist klar, aber handgefärbt sollte es schon sein. Wie gut, dass ich einen Strang Lacegarn von lollipop.yarns in meinem bescheidenen Stash habe, das moderat mehrfarbig ist. Dazu habe ich die passenden Perlen ausgesucht (mit einem verführerischen Metallglanz), und außerdem habe ich noch eine ganz perverse Idee für das Finish, aber ob ich das wirklich tun werde, muss ich mir noch überlegen.

This brought me directly to the question which yarn to use. It’s rather logical to use a purple yarn, but it should be handdyed as well (as I felt). Lucky me, I have a skein of lace yarn from lollipop.yarns in my humble stash, which is moderately variegating. I chose matching beads (with a tempting metallic shine), and I have a really weird idea for a finish, but whether it will ever be executed I don’t know yet.

Dass nicht jedes Strickbuch die Erwartungen erfüllt, ist aus diversen Blogs wohlbekannt, aber manchmal kommt es vor, dass ein Buch den eigenen Blick auf das Stricken bzw. eine Technik auf den Kopf stellt. Das war bei mir z. B. bei Zimmermann so, und es ist – in kleinerem Maßstab auch hier der Fall, bei dem Buch Crazy Lace: an artistic approach to Creative Lace Knitting von Myra Wood.

Not every knitting book one orders meets the expectations, this can be read in a multitude of knitting blogs, but sometimes it happens that a book allows changes the way one thinks about knitting or a knitting technique completely. This happened to me when I read the books by Elizabeth Zimmermann, and it happened to me again when I took a closer look on this book: Crazy Lace: an artistic approach on Creative Lace Knitting by Myra Wood.

Nach Hanami konnte ich wohl behaupten, die Lace-Strickerei bewältigt zu haben, aber die auf dem Markt erhältlichen Bücher können mich nicht begeistern. Zu traditionell, zu altmodisch, nicht mein Fall. Alle Lace-Projekte in meiner Queue sind einzelne Muster, die ich über das Internet erworben habe. Lacebücher hingegen kaufe ich nicht. Crazy Lace habe ich mir bestellt, weil es einen radikal anderen Ansatz an die Lace-Strickerei versprach und die vorveröffentlichten Bilder vielversprechend wirkten.

After managing Hanami, I could heartily tell I accomplished with lace knitting, but the available books about lace knitting do not attract me at all: too traditional, too old fashioned. All lace projects waiting in my queue are single patterns, purchased via the internet, but I don’t buy any lace books. I decided to do differently when I saw a preview of Crazy Lace. The text promised a completely new approach to lace knitting and the preview pictures looked rather promising.

Das Buch enthält eine Beispielsammlung, aber keine festgelegten Muster für komplette Projekte. Stattdessen werden die Prinzipien der Lacestrickerei analysiert und vermittelt, wie man sich von Kästchenzählerei und Chartentzifferungsprozeduren befreien und individuelle, kreative und vor allem sehr moderne Laceprojekte erstellen kann, die mehr oder weniger frei mit der Technik umgehen.

This book contains several examples for lace stitches, but no ready-made patterns to follow for knitting complete projects. The basics of lace knitting technique is analyzed instead, and the author tells how to do it without counting tiny symbols on graph paper and chart decyphering procedures and how to create individual, unique, creative, and very modern lace projects which deal rather freely with the traditional lace knitting technique.

Die Autorin überträgt einige Ideen des Freeform-Knittings in die Lacestrickerei, was zu sehr überraschenden Ergebnissen führt. Ich habe mich gefragt, warum ich nicht selbst auf diese Idee gekommen bin, denn es wirkt auf mich so unschlagbar einfach und selbstverständlich. Das Ganze wirkt so vielversprechend, dass man sofort anfangen und ausprobieren möchte. Es ist auch ideal für handgefärbte Einzelstränge, bei denen man nicht sicher ist, ob man ein komplettes Projekt damit fertigstellen kann

The author adapted some ideas of freeform for lace knitting, what results in very surprising results. I had to ask myself why I didn’t have this idea myself, because it’s so stunningly easy. This looks so promising that I want to start and try it immediately. It’s ideal for handdyed single skeins of laceyarn if one is not sure whether this will make a complete project.

Das Buch wird sicher nicht jedermanns Geschmack treffen, gerade akribischen StrickerInnen dürfte es ein Gräuel sein. Kurz gesagt, traditionelle Lace-Strickerei ist mehr für gute Mädchen, Crazy Lace mehr für wilde Weiber.

This book will surely not be everyone’s cup of tea, specially meticulous knitters might easily hate this, but to cut a long story short: traditional lace knitting is more for good girls, crazy lace more for wild vixens.

Ich habe ja aus Wollmeise den Milkweed-Shawl begonnen und ihn nun zum zweiten Mal aufgetrennt. Ich hatte mich beim ersten Mal böse verstrickt, und auch beim zweiten lief es nicht wie es sollte, und schließlich bin ich darauf gekommen, woran es lag: Es ist das Garn. Im Strang sieht es toll aus, aber verstrickt ist es mir für dieses Teil einfach zu knallig. Also werde ich ein neues Garn für das Projekt bzw. ein neues Projekt für das Garn suchen.

I started the Milkweed Shawl with some Wollmeise yarn, and frogged it the second time now. I made a bad mistake the first time, and the second attempt wasn’t much better. Finally I found out what was wrong: I simply don’t like the colour of the yarn. It’s wonderful in the skein but for this project it’s much too loud. So I’m going to look for a different yarn for the Milkweed and for a new project for the yarn.

Dennoch gebe ich meine Wollmeisen noch nicht aus. Einen Strang habe ich als Geschenk outgesourced (nicht meine Farbe), und angeschlagen habe ich den Ulmus aus den Strängen Miss May und Buxkranzl. Das gefällt mir von den Farben her viel besser. Ich werde die große Version stricken.

But I still don’t give up my attempts to use the Wollmeise yarn. One skein I gave away (not my colour), and I started the Ulmus triangular shawl with the colours Miss May and Buxkranzl. I like this much  more, and I’ll knit the large version.

Die Frage stellte sich vor der Berlinfahrt am Samstag. Eigentlich wollte ich den Gansey mitnehmen, doch da die Wolle sich auf einer 800-Gramm-Kone befindet und das Teil einfach riesig ist, habe ich mich umentschieden. Da ich momentan keine Lust auf Socken habe, wählte ich das Tuch. Doch auch das war tückisch, da meine angefangenen Tücher für ein Unterwegs-Gestrick entweder zu groß oder zu schwierig sind.

This was the question I asked myself before my one-day trip to Berlin. Actually, I wanted to take the gansey with me, but the yarn came on a 800 grams cone, and the garment is huge, so I decided to leave it at home. Since I don’t feel like knitting socks at the moment, I chose to take a shawl with me. But this was not so easy as well because all projects are either to big or too difficult for knitting them on the go.

Daher entschied ich mich, den Milkweed-Shawl anzufangen, der einfach zu stricken ist und auch recht schnell geht. Der gruschtelige Kram oben ist also besagtes Tuch, das schon recht weit gediehen ist. Ich stricke es nicht nur unterwegs, sondern auch abends, denn der dunkelblaue Gansey ist bei elektrischem Licht ungefähr so übersichtlich wie ein schwarzes Gestrick.

Therefore I decided to start with the Milkweed shawl which is fairly easy and quick to knit. The ruffly stuff on the picture above shows it. I don’t knit it on the road only, but also at home, because knitting the dark blue gansey in the shine of a lightbulb is as if I was knitting something black.

Menschen, die eher der Botanik zugeneigt sind, werden in Kraka wohl Blätter erkennen, mich erinnert das Muster jedoch zum Beispiel an Fossilien in einer Steinwand. Da das Tuch noch nicht gespannt ist, kommt das Saugnapfige sehr gut heraus (und ich mag Saugnäpfe und finde Kraken niedlich). Ich hoffe sehr, dass es groß genug wird, sodass ich es nicht zu sehr spannen muss, denn ich würde diese Dreidimensionalität sehr gern erhalten.

If you’re more into botanics, you’ll pobably see a leavy structure in the Kraka pattern. But for me it’s different, it reminds me of a wall full of fossiles of some weird animals gone a long, long time ago. Because the shawl is not blocked yet, the acetabula-like comes out very well (and I love acetabula and think octopi are cute). I really hope it will be large enough so I don’t have to block it too much since I would love to keep the threedimensionality of the pattern.

Nachdem ich mein letztes Laceprojekt aufgeben musste, dachte ich mir: Ein bisschen Lace muss sein (wenn ich es schon gelernt habe …). Daher habe ich das Dreiecktuch Kraka von Annette Danielsen (für Isager) begonnen. Das Muster ist sehr wirkungsvoll und dabei sehr einfach zu stricken; im Prinzip ist es ein Rippenmuster. Vor allem das Fallenlassen der Maschen macht richtig Spaß.

After I abandoned my latest lace project, I found out that a bit of lace just has to happen (after I learned the technique, after all). Therefore I started Kraka, a triangular shawl by Annette Danielsen (for Isager). The pattern is striking, but really easy to knit; it’s a rib pattern, basically. Dropping the stitches is real fun!

Manche Muster wiederholen sich. Dies ist dasselbe wie bei Nr. 2, nur aus einem anderen Material (und mit einer anderen Farbe) gestrickt.

Some of the patterns come back in other patches. This is the same as No. 2, but knitted with a different material and in a different colour.
