Jaja, ich weiß, am Sonntag wären eigentlich Socken dran gewesen. Aber der Strang Stansborough war gerade getrocknet, und da hatte der Celtic Vorrang. (Allerdings ist der Mittwoch unumstößlich dem WiP of Doom gewidmet, keine Sorge). Two Hearts sind wieder ein ganzes Stück gewachsen, und wenn dieser Mustersatz beendet ist, kann ich mit den Ärmeln beginnen.

Yes, I know, on Sunday it would have been the socks’ turn again. But the handspun skein of Stansborough was dry, and so I preferred the celtic over the socks. (But the Wednesdays are inevitably dedicated to the WiP of Doom, don’t worry!). Two Hearts grew quite a bit, and after finishing this pattern repeat, I will start with the sleeves.

Wie ich versprochen habe, langweile ich Euch ab jetzt mit einem neuen WiP of Doom. Es ist die Jacke Stenhaven von Marianne Isager aus dem Buch Japan. Ich habe sie gestern brav wieder aufgenommen und verstehe nicht, wieso ich sie so lange liegenließ, denn das Stricken macht wieder richtig Spaß (ein Hoch auf diese Aktion!). Ich bin gestern sehr gut vorangekommen, und der zweite Ärmel ist ein ganzes Stück länger geworden.

As I promised I will bore you with a new WiP of Doom from now. It’s the Stenhaven Cardigan by Marianne Isager from her book Japan. I took it up yesterday again, after a long break, and I don’t understand why I put it aside for such a long time, since knitting it became really fun again (hooray for the WiP of Doom campaign!). I knitted quite a lot of rows yesterday, and the sleeve became a good amount longer.

Leider kommt das Muster nicht sehr gut heraus auf dieser Aufnahme, aber Ihr werdet mir einfach glauben müssen, dass die zweite handgesponnene Garnpartie Stansborough für den Pullover Two Hearts aus dem Buch A Fine Fleece inzwischen verstrickt ist.  Nun heißt es wieder spinnen, dann geht es weiter.

Stricken mit selbst gesponnenem Garn ist etwas ganz besonderes. Dies sind zwei Mustersätze des Pullovers “Two Hears” aus dem Buch A Fine Fleece. Es ist ein echter Celtic mit viel keltischem Geknote. Die Wolle ist Stansborough in ihrer natürlichen Farbe, die ich nach und nach spinne (momentan brauche ich wieder Nachschub). Entgegen der Anleitung im Buch stricke ich den Pullover in Runden. Leider ist das Muster praktisch unfotografierbar, zumindest bei den momentan herrschenden Lichtverhältnissen.

Knitting with handspun yarn is something special. These are the first two pattern repeats of the “Two Hearts” sweater from the book A Fine Fleece.  The wool is Stansborough in its natural grey shade which I’m currently spinning (the yarn I already spun is almuost used up, so I have to get back to the wheel). I don’t knit thisone flat as suggested in the book, but in rounds. Unfortunately it’s really hard to take a proper picture of the sweater, I will try when the weather cleared up a bit.  

Tichiro-Tina hat dieses Buch, A Fine Flecce von Lisa Lloyd, bereits aus der Sicht einer Strickerin ausführlich beschrieben, und dem ist wenig hinzuzufügen. Es ist auf jeden Fall ein sehr lohnendes Buch für alle, die schöne, klassische Zopfmuster lieben, wobei die hier gezeigten Modelle besonders ausgewogen sind, wie ich finde.

Tina introduced the book A Fine Fleece by Lisa Lloys from the view of a mere knitter, and there is only very little to add. It is, in any case, a book which is more than worth the money for all of us who love classic aran patterns. The patterns here are very well-balanced and aestethic, as I think.

Nun heißt der Untertitel des Werks “knitting with handspun yarn”, es ist also ein Buch, dass sich auch an die von uns wendet, die nicht nur stricken, sondern auch spinnen. Und da ragt diese unter ähnlichen Publikationen weit heraus. Die meisten Bücher, die sich dem Thema “Stricken mit Handgesponnenem” widmen, zeigen schlichte Modelle, die oft durch besonders gesponnene Garne wirken (bis hin zu Artyarn). A Fine Fleece geht einen anderen Weg, denn die Garne, die für diese Modelle benötigt werden, sind klassische, einfache Garne, meist aus der natürlichen Farbe, wie sie eben vom Schaf kommt. Es zeigt sich, dass handgesponnene Garne durch die gewählten Muster hervorragend zur Geltung kommen; Muster und Handgesponnenes erwecken sich gegenseitig zum Leben. Was dieses Buch nicht ist, ist eine Anleitung zum Spinnen, das sollte man schon können (und es gibt genügend Bücher zu diesem Thema). Dafür findet man eine Beschreibung verschiedener Schafrassen und ihrer Wolle, anderer Fasern und Hinweise, wie man Garne für die hier beschriebenen Modelle spinnt.

The subtitle of the book is knitting with handspun yarn, and this means it’s a book for people who spin. Compared with other books thisone is extraordinary. Most publications show rather plain sweaters knitted with handspun yarns, and the yarn does the job (i. e. artyarns or irregular yarn, multicolour etc.). A Fine Fleece is different since the yarns used for these patterns is a plain, classic yarn, mostly in the natural shades and from different breeds. The patterns show the entire beauty of the handspun yarns, the patterns make the handspun live and vice versa. This book does not contain an instruction how to spin, this you’ll have to learn from different sources (but there are plenty of them). It contains portraits of sheep breeds and their wool, of other fibres, and some hints how to spin the yarn requested by these patterns.

Kurz gesagt, es ist nicht nur Tinas neues Lieblingsbuch, sondern auch meines.

To cut a long story short, this is my favourite book as well.

Dieses Buch stammt aus dem Jahr 1984. Ich habe es günstig ersteigern können. Das Titelbild ist ein wenig irritierend, denn es widmet sich zum größten Teil dem klassischen Gansey (was mir sehr entgegenkommt). Es finden sich viele historische Aufnahmen und Musterzeichnungen, sodass man einen traditionellen Pullover leicht nachstricken kann. Es ist eine Fundgrube für alle, die sich auch mit dem historischen Hintergrund der traditionellen Muster beschäftigen möchten.

This book is from 1984, and I got it second hand for a very reasonable price. The picture on the front is a bit misleading because the biggest part of the book is dedicated to the classic gansey (and this serves me well). There are many historic photos published in it, as well as pattern charts. It’s a treasure trove for all who are interested in the historic background of traditional knitting.

Tichiro hat sie vorgestellt, ich habe sie gekauft: die japanischen Strickbücher von Toshiyuki Shimada. In einem unglaublich angelsächsischen Setting (britischen Landhausbewohnern dürften die Tränen kommen) werden Aran-, Fair-Isle- und Lacemuster vorgestellt, die wirklich erlesen schön sind. Keine Innovationen, stattdessen eine Huldigung an die großen europäischen Stricktraditionen. Da ich kein Japanisch kann, werde ich mir mit den Strickschriften behelfen müssen, aber das wird schon gehen. Der kleine Band enthält hübsche Accessoires, die mir auch ausnehmend gut gefallen.

Tichiro mentioned them in her blog, and felt the need to order them: the Japanese knitting books by Toshiyuki Shimada. The setting is unbelievably English (Englishmen will probably moved to tears). The two large books contain Aran-, Fair Isle-, and lace patterns which are extremely handsome. No innovations, no chi-chi but an obeisance to the great European knitting traditions. Since I don’t speak or read Japanese I’ll have to work with the charts only, but this shouldn’t be much of a problem. The small book contains really nice accecoires which I like very much.

Die Ärmel der Stenhaven-Jacke wird im selben Muster gestrickt wie der Rest, nur geht es wenigstens etwas schneller. Ich kann es nicht erwarten, endlich alles auf eine Nadel zu legen und die Raglanlinie zu stricken!

The sleeves of the Stenhaven cardigan are knitted in the same pattern as the rest, but fortunately it’s a bit quicker. I can’t wait to put all stitches on one needle and to knit the raglan line!

Der untere Teil der Jacke Stenhaven von Marianne Isager ist geschafft. Ich entschuldige mich für die blöde Art der Präsentation, aber es ging nicht anders, da ich das Teil entgegen der Anleitung in einem Stück stricke. Nun kommen die Ärmel dran.

The lower part of the body of Stenhaven cardigan by Marianne Isager is done. I’m sorry for the presentation, but this is the only way since I knitted it in one piece (not according to the instructions which ask for a lot of sewing). Now I’ll begin with the sleeves.

Ich habe eine kleine grüne Kanne, aus der ich immer meinen Frühstückstee trinke. Für die wollte ich einen Teacozy stricken, wurde aber nicht fündig, da sie so klein und außerdem noch abgeflacht ist. Daher habe ich einen entworfen. Bei der Farbe und meinen Teevorlieben (morgens vorzugsweise Irish Breakfast) habe ich mich für ein Aranmuster entschieden, das ich wegen der dauernden Zu- und Abnahmen nicht aus einem meiner Musterbücher nehmen konnte. Dies ist er nun, der Springtime in Ireland Tea Cozy. Gestrickt für eine grüne Kanne mit 0,5 Liter Volumen.

I have a small green teapot which I use for breakfast tea. I wanted to knit a cozy for it but could not find any pattern. It’s just too small and flat. Therefore I designed one. Since the pot is green and my preferred morning tea is Irish Breakfast, I decided to knit an aran pattern. The form of the teapot requires to increase or decrease all the time, and I was not able to find an aran pattern that looked good with it. Therefore I designed one, and the whole thing is called Springtime in Ireland Tea Cozy. Knitted for a small green teapot of 0,5 liter.
