Es kam ja die Frage nach dem Starmore-Pullover auf, und ich kann nur sagen: Es geht voran – wenn auch mühsam.

There was the question how far I got with the Starmore sweater, and I can tell: There is a progress, but a rather slow one.

Es macht nach wie vor riesigen Spaß, ihn zu stricken, und ich liebe ihn schon jetzt, aber er ist schwieriger als andere Projekte dieser Art. Das liegt vor allem daran, dass das Muster asymetrisch ist, d. h. es prägt sich nicht gut ein. Hinzu kommen die für traditionelle Fair-Isle-Pullover undenkbaren riesigen Rapporte: Einer ist 28 Maschen breit und 27 Reihen hoch. Da ist nicht viel mit Einprägen.

It’s still tons of fun to knit it, and I already love this sweater, but it’s more difficult to knit it than it was with other similar projects. The main reason is that the pattern is asymetrical, this means you can hardly memorize it. To make things worse, the pattern repeats are unbelievably large which is not typical for traditional fair-isle projects (well, this is none): it’s 28 stitches wide and 27 rows high. Frankly, you have to keep an eye on the chart almost all the time.

Zudem gibt es eine Eigenart, von der ich berichten will: Manche Reihen wollen einfach nicht. Während Reihe 1 – 5 sich mir leicht einprägen und ich sie nach maximal zwei Wiederholungen leicht aus dem Kopf stricke (wie das für viele andere Reihen auch gilt), ist Reihe 9 ein schwieriger Fall. Ebenso Reihe 14 und 16. Aber das ist alles gar nichts gegen Reihe 23. Oh, oh, die geht gar nicht. Die ist eine Katastrophe, denn sie hasst mich, diese Reihe, und ich frage mich jedes Mal, ob es mir nicht wenigstens ein Mal gelingt, sie ohne Zwischenfälle zu stricken (Die Antwort ist übrigens: Nein, es gelingt mir nicht).

Besides this, there is something weird about this pattern: Some rows simply don’t want to be knitted. Rows 1 – 5 are fairly easy, as many others. After knitting the repeat about two times, it’s fairly easy to memorize it and to know it by heart. Row 9 is rather difficult, as are rows 14 and 16. But this is nothing against row 23. Thisone really hates me, and I keep asking myself whether it will be possible to knit it without any trouble just for one time (the answer, of course, is no. It’s not possible to do so).

Unglücklicherweise ist es abends zu dunkel, um diesen Pullover zu stricken; denn bei elektrischem Licht sind sich die Farben zu ähnlich. Dies sind also die Gründe, warum es nur langsam vorangeht damit. Aber ich verzweifle nicht, denn nur noch ein paar Reihen, dann mache ich mich and die Ärmelsteeks.

Ich würde gern wissen, wie ihr eure Pullover entwerft. Strickt ihr nur nach fertigen Anleitungen? Rechnet ihr diese im Zweifel um oder hofft ihr einfach das Beste? Habt ihr vielleicht einen Idealpullover daheim, an dem ihr euch orientiert? Malt ihr einen Schnitt auf Zeitungspapier? Oder nutzt ihr gar eine Software, und wenn ja: welche und wie sind eure Erfahrungen damit?
Ich stricke viele Pullover selbstberechnet und meist in Runden. Entweder als Gansey oder nach dem Zimmermann-Prinzip mit verschiedenen Konstruktionsprinzipien.

Diesmal war es wegen der vielen freien Tage (Weihnachten und Wochenende) ja besonders bräsig, also ideal, um sich seinen Hobbys zu widmen. Unter anderem habe ich an meinem aktuellen Fair-Isle-Projekt weitergearbeitet. Nun erkennt man schon einen kompletten Mustersatz in seiner ganzen Farbenpracht. Und es macht einen Riesenspaß!

These time there were many holidays (Christmas and the weekend following directly), and this gave me some extra time to dedicate myself to my hobbies. First of all I went on with my current stranded project. Now you can recognize a complete pattern repeat with its gorgeous colours. And it’s real fun!

Die Farben stimmen nicht zu 100%, aber dies ist ein erstes Bild meines neuen Fair-Isle-Projekts. Ich kann es gar nicht zur Seite legen, so viel Spaß macht mir das Stricken in dieser Technik.

Of course the colours are not as they look like, but it’s a first impression. I hardly can put it aside since it’s so much fun to knit.

Zu den Farben: Die hat mir Frau Kaufmann (ehemals Wolle und Design) zusammengestellt, nach meinen Vorgaben. Ich wünschte mir Rot- und Blautöne, insgesamt nicht zu hell. Mit ihrer Auswahl bin ich sehr zufrieden, man soll den Profis eben nicht zu sehr dazwischenquatschen.

About the colours: Ms. Kaufmann (ex Wolle und Design) choose this selection for me, after I told her that I wanted the sweater in blues and reds, not too bright, please. I’m more than satisfied with her choice, it was a good idea not to fiddle around when real professionals are doing their work.

Das Garn lagerte dann erst mal in meinem Stash, bis ich mich traute, den Pullover zu beginnen. Es ist mein zweites großes Fair-Isle-Projekt.

After I received it, I put the yarn in my stash until I had the courage to start knitting. It’s my first big project in stranded knitting.

Nun sehe ich, was den grauen Pullover aus Naturwolle angeht, auch wieder etwas klarer: Er wird ganz schlicht, bis auf einen Zopf auf Ärmel und Schultern.

Now I know how I’ll knit the gray sweater. It will be very plain, except one small braid on sleeves and shoulders.

Die Idee stammt aus dem Buch In the Hebrides von Alice Starmore, jedoch stricke ich ihn nicht in Einzelteilen, wie die Anleitung vorsieht (bäääh!), sondern in einem Stück, als Sattelschulterpullover, wie unserer Meisterin aller Pulloverklassen, Ms. Elizabeth Zimmermann, uns lehrte.

The idea comes from the book In the Hebrides by Alice Starmore, but I don’t knit it flat and in pieces, as the instruction suggests, but in the round as saddle shoulder sweater, as the champion of all sweater classes, Ms. Elizabeth Zimmermann, taught us.

Auf dem Bild kann man es schon sehen: Es wird “dies”, mit den im Rohzustand gezeigten Farben, zusammengestellt von der unvergleichlichen Frau Kaufmann.

You can recognize what I chose when having a closer look: I’ll knit “this” first, as seen in the picture with the yarn selected by the unbelievable Mrs. Kaufmann.

Leicht war es nicht, ich schwankte hin und her, aber letztendlich gab das Argument, dass dies Modell “winterlicher” wirke, den Ausschlag. Es ist ja bald Wintersonnenwende (in mancher Hinsicht denke ich doch eher pagan), und da passt das Muster in dieser Farbigkeit doch ganz gut. Außerdem habe ich momentan Lust auf die richtig harte Tour beim Stricken.

It was not an easy decision for me; I was not sure what to do for some days, but finally the lady who called this pattern “more suitable for winter” helped me to decide. It will be winter solstice soon (and I sort of think pagan in many ways), and I think this pattern and these shades will be perfect. Besides this, I like it tough when knitting at the moment.

Wir alle lieben exotische Garne und bestellen sie auch, oft aus Übersee. Yak-Garn, Possum-Garn, Sariseide, Garn mit Metallkern usw. Dabei vergessen wir oft, dass es auch hier Tolles zu entdecken gibt, was auch daran liegt, dass unsere Wollquellen dergleichen nicht führen.

We all love exotic yarns and some of us order some of them, mostly from overseas. There is yarn from yaks or possums, sari silk, yarn with metal core and so on. But we often forget that there are great yarns from here as well, and one of the reasons is that they are not available in our yarn stores.

Mutter Jinx und ich waren neulich im Freilichtmuseum Kiekeberg zum Kunsthandwerker-Weihnachtsmarkt. Es war eine trübe Veranstaltung, so trübe, dass ich keine Fotos gemacht habe. Aber im Museumsshop wurde ich fündig: Dort gab es ein wundervolles Strickgarn aus naturbelassener Schafwolle, ungefärbt. Es gibt dieses Material in Naturweiß, Dunkelbraun und eben in Grau. Es verstrickt sich einfach großartig und ergibt ein sehr schönes Maschenbild. Dazu ist der Preis auch noch günstig. Was will man mehr?

Mother Jinx and I went to the Kiekeberg museum again, for the Christmas fair of crafters. It was horrid, so horrid that I refused to take any pictures. But in the museum shop I found something very special: There was a wonderful knitting yarn for sale, made of pure wool, undyed and without any chemical treatment. It’s available in cream, dark brown, and gray. Knitting with it is a pleasure, and the stitches come out just beautifully. The price is very reasonable. It’s just great.

Ja, ich weiß, es ist furchtbar, aber es hilft nichts. Diese Wolle ist praktisch unfotografierbar, und außerdem ist das Muster bei künstlichem Licht praktisch nicht zu stricken. Daher wachsen die Ärmel auch nicht so schnell, wie sie es eigentlich könnten. Ich leide also beim Stricken, und meine LeserInnen leiden beim Betrachten von Fotos, bei denen man nur Umrisse sieht, aber da kann man nichts machen. Wie auch immer, der erste Ärmel ist fertig, und das Ende ist somit absehbar.

Yes, I know, it’s not a pleasure to see pictures of this sweater. It’s almost impossible to take a proper photo of this yarn indoors, and it’s not possible at all to knit this pattern without daylight. Therefore the sleeves don’t grow as fast as they could. However, the first sleeve is done, and the end is near.

Um meine LeserInnen nicht weiter mit Crazy Lace, Perlen, Perversitäten und Kitsch zu verwirren, kommt heute etwas Überschaubares: Der Hauptteil des Ganseys, den ich mit der Wolle stricke, die ich von der Insel Skye mitgebracht habe, ist fertig. Ich habe für die Schultern einen einfachen Three-Needle-Bindoff gewählt, also gibt es diesmal keine esoterische Schulterkonstruktion. Mit etwas Mühe ist das in der Mitte des Bildes zu erkennen (die Wolle ist praktisch unfotografierbar). Nun folgen die Ärmel.

For not confusing my dear readers with things like crazy lace, beads, weird embellishments and kitsch, I’ll show something more straightforward. The biggest part of the gansey I’m currently knitting with the yarn I brought from the Isle of Skye is done now. For the shoulders I chose a plain three-needles bindoff, there are no esoteric shoulder constructions this time. Unfortunately it’s extremely hard to take a proper picture of this shade. The fake seam can be seen in the middle. Now I have to do the sleeves.

Dies ist der zweite Pullover, den ich aus Garn stricke, das ich von der Insel Skye mitgebracht habe. Der Gansey wächst ordentlich, ich bin nun beim Vorderteil angelangt, nachdem das Rückenteil fertig wurde.

This is the second sweater I’m knitting from yarn I brought from the Isle of skye. The gansey is growing steadily, and I just reached the front (after I finished the back completely).

Ich merke, dass es etwas ganz Besonderes ist, mit mitgebrachter Wolle zu stricken oder ein Teil daraus zu tragen (zumindest, wenn es ein für die Region typisches Material ist), denn ein wenig kommt das Urlaubsgefühl zurück, noch mehr als sonst jedenfalls. Liegt wohl auch daran, dass ich immer noch nicht vollständig hier angekommen bin. So geht es mir eigentich immer, wenn ich die britischen Inseln besuche.

I feel that it’s very special to knit something with yarn brought as a souvenir or wearing a garment knitted from it (at least when it’s a typical material from that region). A little bit of the way I felt when I was there comes back then, at least a bit more than it usually feels. Maybe the reason is that I didn’t really arrive mentally yet, and I always feel like this after visiting the British Isles.

Wenn ich dieses Teil abgearbeitet habe, werde ich auch genügend Muße und Wissen haben, um den Gansey-Workshop zu vollenden.
