This post is of course about fringes and where they were applied to, but tells also how I learned to like the work with very thick needles (or, in this case: hooks).

Bei Ravelry entdeckte ich eine Anleitung für einen superdicken Schal, der tunesisch gehäkelt wird. Ich war sofort begeistert. Nun muss man wissen (und wer hier ab und zu hereinschaut, hat das vermutlich bemerkt), dass ich es nicht liebe, mit dicken Nadeln und dicker Wolle zu arbeiten. Ich finde die Ergebnisse plump und schwer. Für einen Schal braucht mal leicht mal 700 – 800 Gramm, und das ist etwa das Doppelte,was viele meiner selbstgestrickten Pullover wiegen.

At Ravelry’s I found a pattern of a hyper-thick scarf executed in Tunisian crochet technique. It was love at the first sight. Well, you have to know (and if you take a look at this blog from time to time you’ll probably have noticed) that I deeply dislike using superbulky yarn and very thick needles. I think the results look clumsy and, besides this, they turn out to be very heavy. For a scarf you easily use 700 or 800 grams, and that’s approximately double of the weight of the sweaters I knit.

Aber nicht in diesem Fall.

But not in this case.

Zunächst braucht man eine wirklich dicke tunesische Häkelnadel, die in Island in Handarbeit hergestellt wird. Mr. Jumbo, wie sie genannt wird, hat etwa 20 mm, liegt aber erstaunlich gut in der Hand und ist sehr schön verarbeitet.

First of all you need a really thick Tunisian crochet hook which is handcrafted in Iceland. Mr. Jumbo (that’s what it’s called) is about 20 mm but lays really comfortably in your hand, and so it’s a pleasure to work with.

Gehäkelt wird mit Plötulopi (unspun Icelandic), einem Vorgarn. Es lässt sich wesentlich besser verarbeiten, als das bei ähnlichen Produkten aus Nordosteuropa der Fall ist, und die Fasern reißen nicht so schnell. Man arbeitet mit drei Strängen.

For this scarf Ploetulopi (unspun Icelandic), a preyarn, is used. It’s much better to work with than with similar products from Northeastern Europe, because the fiber isn’t torn apart so easily.

Im Original wurde für die Fransen ein dickes Garn in Kontrastfarben verwendet, und das brachte mich auf die Idee, dass ich da eigentlich auch handgesponnenes Artyarn nehmen könnte.

The pattern calls for a bulky yarn in a contrasting colour, and this brought me to the idea to use handspun artyarn instead.

Von da zu der Entscheidung, zwei verschiedene Garne zu verwenden, war es nur noch ein kleiner Schritt. Ich habe Small Corkscrews und Wintergreen in Spring exklusiv für diesen Schal gesponnen.

It took only a small step to use two entirely different types of yarn. I spun Small Corkscrews and Wintergreen in Spring for this scarf exclusively.

Ein Schal und seine Fransen – ihn zu häkeln dauerte nur wenige Stunden.

A scarf and its fringes – it took just a few hours to crochet this.

Der fertige Schal wiegt ohne Fransen übrigens keine 200 Gramm – er ist fluffig, weich (na, so weich, wie isländische Wolle eben sein kann, aber deutlich weicher als die versponnenen Qualitäten) und fällt sehr schön – nix steif, dick, plump und panzerartig.

The weight of this scarf is less than 200 grams – without fringes. It’s lofty, soft (well, as soft as Icelandic wool can be, but much softer than the usual icelandic yarns), and it drapes just beautifully – and it’s not stiff, thick, clumsy or armour-like at all.

Die Garnstücke, die ich von den Fransen übrig behalten habe, fand ich zum Wegwerfen zu schade. Daher habe ich mich entschlossen, meine Umwelt bedingungslos daran teilhaben zu lassen.

I didn’t want to throw away the small bits of yarn which were left over after installing the fringes. So I decided to let my surrounding participate unquestioningly.

Ein wenig orientalische Fransigkeit kann die Welt gut gebrauchen, finde ich.

A bit of oriental-style fringiness will be good for the world, I think.

For knitting with it this yarn is too rich in contrast, but I want to use it for making fringes, and for this purpose it’s ideal. I used two types of fiber for it and plied them with alternating dominance.

This is the latest yarn from my spinning studio: A skein of Scottish wool in the shade midsummer. I spun and plied it on my dear Henkys wheel. The raw material comes from lollipop.yarns by filzflash. Btw, Susanne offers a sockyarn, laceyarn and fiber club in August.

Das Rohmaterial ist ein bisschen hakig und rau, sodass dünn ausspinnen für Anfänger nicht ganz einfach ist, aber es lohnt sich: Mein Garn hat stolze 14 WPI im verzwirnten Zustand.

The raw material is quite rough, and spinning a thin yarn is for beginners not so easy, but it’s definately worth the efford. The yarn shown above has 14 WPI (see detail below).

Wenn man Fasern oder eine Spindel in den USA bestellt, wird meist eine Faserprobe beigelegt, die man testen kann. Auch hier sind die USA, was anspruchsvolle Handarbeiten angeht, vorbildlich, denn in Deutschland sind die Mengen der kostenlosen Proben eher winzig. Mikroskopisch, wenn es sie überhaupt gibt, und an Testspinnen ist gar nicht zu denken. Dabei sind das erstklassige Werbeträger, die einem einen unmittelbaren Eindruck von dem Angebot verschaffen. Und man kann auch mal neue Mischungen kennenlernen, die man einfach so vielleicht nicht bestellen würde.

When ordering a spindle or some fibers in the USA, quite often some fiber samples comes with it which is meant for testing. Here, as in many ways, the USA is sort of a role model cause in Germany these fiber samples – if you get some at all – are quite often so small that you hardly can see them with your bare eyes – leave alone spinning them. This is rather stupid because these fiber samples make an excellent advertising vehicle, regarding texture and colours. And you can test new, sophisticated blends one would hardly order without seeing them before.

Oft bekommt man so viel, dass Teststränge von recht ordentlicher Größe herauskommen. Sie sind ideal, um mit einer Spindel versponnen zu werden, wo der Kontakt zum Material intensiver stattfindet als mit dem Rad. Hier einige Proben, die ich versponnen habe. Leider fehlen manchmal die Angaben zu der Zusammensetzung.

Quite often you receive an amount that makes a good test skein of yarn. They’re ideal for being processed with a spindle where the contact with the material is more immediate than with a wheel. Here comes a selection of test skeins I spun lately; unfortunately sometimes there are given no further details about the material.

Natürlich sind diese Proben auch eine ideale Spielwiese; man kann verschiedene Techniken ausprobieren, verschiedene Stärken etc., feststellen, wie sich bestimmte Fasern oder Mischungen am besten verspinnen lassen, ohne Teile einer kostbaren Unikatfärbung o. ä. zu verballern.

Of course these fiber samples are an ideal playground for the fiber addict, you can try different techniques, different yarn counts  or find out how these fibers or blends are spun best, without messing up parts of a precious, unique dyelot.

Dies ist die erste Hälfte eines Plying Balls, Finnsheep, versponnen mit der Kuchulu von Jenkins, unglaublich 45 WPI. Ich habe sie mit Perlen versehen, den kleinsten Rocailles, die ich finden konnte. Man braucht eine 0,5 mm Häkelnadel, eine ruhige Hand und gute Nerven.

This is the first half of a plying ball, finnsheep fiber, spun with the Kuchulu spindle by Jenkins. The yarn has unbelievable 45 WPI. I embellished it with white seed beads, the smallest I could find. You need a 0,5 mm crochet hook, a very calm hand an excellent nerves.

Earth

Am Spinnrad war ich auch wieder mal, diesmal wollte ich passend zum Green Man ein Artyarn herstellen, das einfarbig und 100% aus natürlichen Materialien ist. Herausgekommen ist dieses, gesponnen aus dicken, etwa unregelmäßigen Singles, die mit dünnen aus demselben Material (Black Welsh, ungefärbt) verzwirnt wurde.

I used my wheel for spinning an artyarn for matching Green Man. It should be monochrome and made of natural materials only. The result is this yarn, made of thick, a bit irregular singles, plied with a thinone, spun of the same material (Black Welsh, undyed).
