Diese drei Stränge habe ich für einen Cowl gesponnen; sie sind aufeinander abgestimmt. Bei der Auswahl der Materialien habe ich auf eine gewisse Spannung geachtet, was Farbe und Textur angeht.

I spun these three skeins for a cowl, and they are sort of adapted to each other. When I chose the materials I wanted some tension regarding colours and textures.

Ich finde es wichtig, beim Spinnen von Rohmaterial auf die natürlichen Eigenschaften der Faser zu achten und diese im Garn zur Geltung kommen zu lassen. Im Klartext: Ich will keine raue schottische Wolle, die so aussieht, als wäre es Merino (wenn es aussehen soll wie Merino, dann nehme ich auch Merino).

I think it’s important to bring out the natural character of a fiber for spinning it. That means, I don’t want Scottish Highland wool to look as if it was merino (if I want it to look like merino, I’ll use merino).

Wie die Leser meines Blogs in regelmäßigen Abständen erleiden dürfen, habe ich ein besonderes Interesse an Handspindeln, und zwar auch in kulturhistorischer Hinsicht. Natürlich muss ich die verschiedenen Handspindeln auch austesten, so lernte ich nicht nur Spinnen mit den gängigen Fallspindeln, sondern auch die Bedienung von Supportspindeln, inklusive der Exoten.

As a reader of my blog you have to suffer from my posts about handspindles and their use. I’m really interested in these things, not only in the practical aspects but also in spindles as part of an ancient and worldwide part of the cultural heritage of mankind. Of course I wanted not only to read and to see pictures, but aso to use them – and I have learned not only to deal with top- and low whorl types but also with support spindles and all kind of exotic types.

Nun kann ich endlich sagen, welcher Spindeltyp mir der liebste ist, also welchen ich am liebsten benutze. Und nein, es ist nicht die Kopfspindel, die unter modernen westlichen SpinnerInnen die größte Verbreitung genießt. Es ist die türkische Kreuzspindel. Warum die so heißt, ist mir schleierhaft, da sie eher im mittleren Osten und in Ägypten beheimatet ist als in der Türkei (vielleicht liegt der Grund für die Bezeichnung in der früheren Ausdehnung des Osmanischen Reiches).

Now I can eventually tell which type is my favourite, the one I like best for my personal use. And, no, it’s not the top whorl spindle which is the favourite type of the contemporary spinner in the western hemisphere. It’s the Turkish spindle. I really don’t know why it’s called Turkish since it’s home can be located more in the Middle East and Egypt (maybe it’s because of the former dimensions of the Osman Empire).

Ich finde Türkische Spindeln von den Eigenschaften her einfach unschlagbar: Sie sind zerlegbar (wenn nicht in Benutzung), enorm drehfreudig, und ich bekomme mehr Garn drauf als auf eine Kopfspindel. Mit zunehmender Praxis gelingt es ja, immer mehr Garn in einem Durchgang zu spinnen, und meine Grenze ist inzwischen nicht mehr das Gewicht der Spindel, sondern das Garnvolumen, und das macht das Spinnen sehr mühsam. Türkische Spindeln sind in dieser Hinsicht einfach belastbarer. Als besonderen Gimmick bekommt man noch ein fertiges Knäul, das von beiden Seiten verwendet werden kann.

I think Turkish spindles have unbeatable advantages. They are dismountable (when not in use), they spin like hell, and I can load them with more yarn than I can with a top-whorl spindle. Becoming an intermediate spinner also means one can spin more with one spindle, and getting more yarn means for me that my top-whorl spindles suffer quite often from a heavy overload, and I don’t mean the weight but the volume of the yarn. And this makes spinning enormously cumbersome. I can wind much more yarn on a Turkish spindle. As a special gimmick one gets a ball of yarn which can be used from both sides.

Auch mein zweitliebster Spindeltyp ist ein Exot, der hierzulande nur wenig bekannt und verbreitet ist: Die Akha. Sie ist extrem leicht und wird traditionell, also in ihrer ostasiatischen Heimat, für Baumwolle und Seide verwendet. Sie ist ein Mischtyp aus Fall- und Supportspindel und geeignet, hauchdünne Fäden zu spinnen.

My second favourite – after the Turkish is a rather exotic type, which is quite unknown in Europe. It’s the Akha. It’s an extreme lightweight. In it’s natural habitat – the Far East – it’s used for spinning cotton and silk. It’s kind of a hybrid type, between a drop and a support spindle and is perfect for spinning very, very thin yarn.

This is the maximum, more doesn’t fit on this  spindle. I’ll use this yarn for a cowl.

Wenn man Fasern oder eine Spindel in den USA bestellt, wird meist eine Faserprobe beigelegt, die man testen kann. Auch hier sind die USA, was anspruchsvolle Handarbeiten angeht, vorbildlich, denn in Deutschland sind die Mengen der kostenlosen Proben eher winzig. Mikroskopisch, wenn es sie überhaupt gibt, und an Testspinnen ist gar nicht zu denken. Dabei sind das erstklassige Werbeträger, die einem einen unmittelbaren Eindruck von dem Angebot verschaffen. Und man kann auch mal neue Mischungen kennenlernen, die man einfach so vielleicht nicht bestellen würde.

When ordering a spindle or some fibers in the USA, quite often some fiber samples comes with it which is meant for testing. Here, as in many ways, the USA is sort of a role model cause in Germany these fiber samples – if you get some at all – are quite often so small that you hardly can see them with your bare eyes – leave alone spinning them. This is rather stupid because these fiber samples make an excellent advertising vehicle, regarding texture and colours. And you can test new, sophisticated blends one would hardly order without seeing them before.

Oft bekommt man so viel, dass Teststränge von recht ordentlicher Größe herauskommen. Sie sind ideal, um mit einer Spindel versponnen zu werden, wo der Kontakt zum Material intensiver stattfindet als mit dem Rad. Hier einige Proben, die ich versponnen habe. Leider fehlen manchmal die Angaben zu der Zusammensetzung.

Quite often you receive an amount that makes a good test skein of yarn. They’re ideal for being processed with a spindle where the contact with the material is more immediate than with a wheel. Here comes a selection of test skeins I spun lately; unfortunately sometimes there are given no further details about the material.

Natürlich sind diese Proben auch eine ideale Spielwiese; man kann verschiedene Techniken ausprobieren, verschiedene Stärken etc., feststellen, wie sich bestimmte Fasern oder Mischungen am besten verspinnen lassen, ohne Teile einer kostbaren Unikatfärbung o. ä. zu verballern.

Of course these fiber samples are an ideal playground for the fiber addict, you can try different techniques, different yarn counts  or find out how these fibers or blends are spun best, without messing up parts of a precious, unique dyelot.

Dies ist die erste Hälfte eines Plying Balls, Finnsheep, versponnen mit der Kuchulu von Jenkins, unglaublich 45 WPI. Ich habe sie mit Perlen versehen, den kleinsten Rocailles, die ich finden konnte. Man braucht eine 0,5 mm Häkelnadel, eine ruhige Hand und gute Nerven.

This is the first half of a plying ball, finnsheep fiber, spun with the Kuchulu spindle by Jenkins. The yarn has unbelievable 45 WPI. I embellished it with white seed beads, the smallest I could find. You need a 0,5 mm crochet hook, a very calm hand an excellent nerves.

Pear Takhli von Grizzly Mountain Arts, Ebenholz und antikes Walrosselfenbein (mit Zertifkat). Hört sich politisch unkorrekt an, ist es aber nicht – der Zahn ist über 100 Jahre alt. Spinnt großartig.

Dies ist der zweite Versuch, mir eine Badetasche zu stricken, nachdem ich letztes Jahr den ersten wegen zu großer Gruseligkeit aufgegeben habe. Diesmal verwende ich handgesponnenes Baumwollgarn (das Zeuch muss ja auch weg …), das ich mit dunklerem, naturfarbenen Leinen kombinieren werde. Es wird ein eigener Entwurf, und vielleicht klappt es ja dieses Mal tatsächlich …

This is my second attempt to knit a beach bag, after I gave up the first one last year – it looked just awful. I’m using handspun cotton this time, which I’ll combine with darker linen. It’ll be my own design, and maybe it will work this time sufficiently.

Außerdem mein allererstes Baumwollgarn, das aussieht wie ein echtes Anfängergarn (was daran liegt, dass es ein Anfängergarn IST). Es ist wunderbar weich und gefällt mir sehr. Gesponnen mit einer schweren Apfel-Takhli (supported natürlich), 10 WpI.

And my very first cotton yarn which looks like a real beginner’s yarn (well, in fact this is what it is). It’s really soft, and I like it very much. Spun with a heavy apple takhli (supported, of course), 10 WpI.

Ich habe mich entschlossen, meine ganzen Testfäden mal zu verzwirnen, auch um das zu üben, und dies ist der erste. Die Singles stammen noch aus meiner generellen Handspindel-Übungsphase, aber es sieht ganz lustig aus. Für irgendwas werde ich es schon verwenden können, und wenn es als “waste yarn” ist, das in Anleitungen immer wieder nachgefragt wird.

I decided to ply all my exercise- and test-yarns, and this is the first one. The singles were spun during my “I really want to practice handspinning with a spindle”-time, but it looks quite funny. I’ll use it somehow, maybe as “waste yarn” which is required quite frequently for knitting.

Natürlich musste ich die Spindel aus Mali sofort ausprobieren, und hier ist das Ergebnis: Ich habe die Merinofaser mitteldünn ausgesponnen, und es ging erstaunlich schnell. Die Spindel läuft sehr gut, und es macht richtig Spaß, sie zu benutzen.

Of course I had to give the Mali spindle a try immediately, and this is the result: I spun the merino fiber not too thin, and it went really fast. The spindle works very good, and it’s really fun to use it.

Mit der Übung kommt auch der Geschmack am Spinnen mit einer Supportspindel, ich bin nun an dem Punkt angelangt, wo ich auch bei diesem Spindeltyp entscheide, wie das Garn aussehen soll, dass ich spinne (und nicht umgekehrt).

After practicing spinning with a support spindle I started to like it, and I came to the point that I decide how the yarn I spin will look like.

Da ich zwei Schäfte habe, kann das Garn auf dem ersten ruhen, während ich mit der Spindel und dem zweiten Schaft weiterarbeiten kann.

Since I have two shafts for this spindle, the yarn can rest on the firstone while I can go on spinning with the second one.

Na ja, eigentlich ist es nur der Wirtel, den ich erstanden habe: einen großen, antiken Tonwirtel aus Mali. Die Schäfte kamen heute dazu, handgefertigt von einem Tischler aus Buchenholz.

Well, actually it’s just the whorl which I purcased recently, a large old clay whorl from Mali. She shafts were crafted by a carpenter, and the wood is beech.

Man steckt den Wirtel einfach auf den Schaft, da es eine große Supportspindel ist, ist keine weitere Sicherung nötig, das Teil hält auch so.

You just put the whorl on the shaft and you have a large support spindle. It’s not necessary to fix it with glue or splines. It just stays in place.

Für mich ist diese Spindel etwas ganz Besonderes, und ich werde sie hoch in Ehren halten.

For me this spindle is something very special, and I’ll cherish it.

Das Verspinnen von Baumwolle wirft einen nicht auf den Anfängerstatus als SpinnerIn zurück, aber es funktioniert völlig anders als das Verspinnen von Wolle, Alpaka & Co.

Spinning cotton doesn’t bring you back to a beginner’s status, but it’s completely different from spinning wool, mohair or alpaca fibres.

Mit einer handelsüblichen Fallspindel möchte ich Baumwolle nicht verspinnen, denn das Material ist wahnsinning kurzfaserig und außerdem sehr fragil: Einmal am Kardenband gezupft, und man hat eine Art Wattebausch in der Hand. In den Ländern, in denen Baumwolle verarbeitet wird, wurde daher vernünftigerweise die Supportspindel oder sehr leichte Akhas (ein Mittelding zwischen Support- und Fallspindel) das Mittel der Wahl.

Spinning cotton with an usual drop spindle may be the appropriate way for masochists, because the fibres are very short. Pulling the carded fibre makes handy small cotton wool balls quite easily. In the countries where cotton is spun traditionally, people always preferred support spindles or featherweight Akhas (a melange of support and drop spindles).

Es gibt außerdem noch ein paar gravierende Unterschiede beim Verspinnen von Baumwolle, an die man sich als wollgewöhnte Spinnexistenz erst mal gewöhnen muss.

• Während man beim Verspinnen von Wolle (Mohair, Alpaca) darauf achtet, dass nicht zu viel Drall in die Spinnfaser läuft, kann es bei Baumwolle gar nicht genug sein. Ich arbeite daran, mir meine wohltrainierte Stop-Bewegung abzugewöhnen. Falls man den Drall in der Faser nicht zulässt, kommen wieder die Wattebälle.
• Zumindest als Anfänger im Bereich des Baumwollspinnens bereitet man die Faser nicht durch Ausziehen vor, wenn die Spindel sich nicht schnell dreht. Sonst: => Wattebälle
• Es gibt kaum ein Zuviel an Drall. Wenn’s so richtig hart verdreht ist, hat man die Chance, dass der Faden hält. Sonst eher nicht. Die Folge sind zwar keine Wattebälle, aber ein wattiges, brüchiges Etwas, dem keine große Zukunft als Faden beschieden ist.

There are some major differences for cotton spinning, and a dedicated wool spinner has to get used to them.

• Spinning wool, mohair, alpaca means to keep most of the twist from the fiber, spinning cotton means: there can’t be enough twist running into the fiber while spinning. Momentarily I desperately try to get rid of the habit of stopping the twist before it reaces the bundle of fibres in my hand, a well-trained and very useful movement for dealing with wool. If you don’t allow the twist to run into the yet unspun cotton fiber, you’ll end with quite an amount of cotton wool balls.
• At least as long as you’re a beginner you won’t prepare the fiber before spinning by pulling handy parts when the spindle is not turning fast, you’ll end again with quite an amount of cotton wool balls.
• There can be hardly too much twist. When the fibre is twisted really tightly, you’ll have a chance the thread will last and not end up in … no, no cotton balls this time, but handy, short soft pieces.

Ich verspinne das Material bewusst dicker (ganz dünn habe ich auch schon hinbekommen, ist nicht so die Kunst, dünn geht bei Baumwolle ganz schnell), denn ich möchte mir irgendwann mal eine Badetasche anfertigen. Und es fängt sogar an, richtig Spaß zu machen.

I’m trying to spin sort of a thicker yarn. Btw: It’s not difficult to spin a thin thread with cotton, you’ll very quickly have something similar to the thickness of a sewing thread, but I want to knit a beach-bag … once. And it just starts to become the real fun.

Generell kann man sagen, dass es schon sehr von Vorteil ist, wenn man gut mit der Spindel spinnen kann; für Anfänger stelle ich mir das mit der Baumwolle  ganz gruselig vor. Es ist auch nicht schwer, mit einer Supportspindel zurechtzukommen, hier profitiert man sehr von bereits bestehender Erfahrung. Aber man muss ganz kräftig umdenken, an- und abtrainieren, damit es mit der Baumwolle klappt.

What I can tell by now: It’s a big advantage when you’re capable to process wool with a hand spindle, for absolute spinning novices it must be horrid to start with cotton. It’s not difficult at all to deal with a support spindle, one benefits from general spinning experience quite a lot. But one has to rethink spinning and leave some habits behind while adapting others anew for making it work.
Supportspindeln werden nicht nur für sehr kurzstapelige Fasern wie Baumwolle oder Kaschmir verwendet, sondern auch für hauchdünnes Lacegarn a la Orenburg. Man muss beim Spinnen darauf achten, dass die Spindel auf einer geeigneten Unterlage gleichmäßig und schnell läuft, andererseits hält man sie durch den gesponnenen Faden aufrecht, jedoch ohne Zug auf diesen meist noch sehr fragilen Faden auszuüben. Das ist am Anfang nicht ganz einfach, geht nach kurzer Zeit doch völlig selbstverständlich.

Support spindles are not only used for very short fibers like cotton or cashmere, but also for ultra-thin laceyarn like the Orenburg type. While spinning with tools like these you have to be careful to let the spindle run on a flat surface that allows fast and undisturbed runnings. It’s held upright by the thread you spin with it – without burdening the fragile thread by the spindle’s weight. In the beginning this is not so easy, but one gets used to it pretty quickly.
