The perfect harmony beween the spindle’s and she material’s colour is a rare thing …

Hier wurde er bereits angekündigt, und nun ist er fertig: der diesjährige Osterhase für Mutter Jinx. Ein praktisches Modell, das seine Füllung gleich mitbringt und so Platz spart und den Haushalt nicht vollstellt.

It was announced here already, and now it’s done: this year’s Easter bunny for Mother Jinx. It’s a rather practical  version this time. It brings it’s own filling and therefore saves space without cluttering a household.

Diesmal habe ich gehäkelt (es ist immer noch keine Lieblingstechnik …) und anschließend (hand-)gefilzt. Verwendet habe ich handgesponnene schottische Wolle (fingering weigtht). Ich habe mich grob an dieser Vorlage orientiert, sie aber stark abgewandelt.

This time it was crochet (still not my favourite craft …) and felted (by hands) afterwards. I used handspun yarn (Scottish combed top, handdyed, the yarn is fingering). I was roughly inspired by this pattern, but heavily modified it.

Dieses Jahr wird gehäkelt, und zwar aus selbstgesponnener Wolle. Demnächst mehr.

Nachdem ich entdeckte, dass Handspindeln mehr sein können als ein lästiger aber nützlicher Schritt zum Spinnen am Spinnrad, fand ich schnell heraus, dass mein Lieblingstyp die türkische Spindel ist.

After I found out that hand spindles can be more than an annoying but useful step to master a spinning wheel, I also found out that my favourite spindle type is the Turkish.

Das gilt jedoch nur für das Spinnen, fürs Zwirnen habe ich einen momentanen Favoriten, der nicht nur hervorragend tut, was er tun soll, sondern auch eine echte Augenweide ist.

But this counts for spinning only, for the plying job I have a current favourite which does what it’s supposed to do in an excellent way but which is true eye candy as well.

Ich habe heute eine Einladung zu einem Spinnwettbewerb erhalten. Ich bin zwar ein Noob, was Schnellspinnen angeht (ich bin ja nicht auf der Flucht), aber ich werde trotzdem teilnehmen, just for the spirit. Ich bin mir noch unsicher, ob ich in der Spinnrad- oder der Handspindelklasse starte. Trotzdem habe ich die Gelegenheit genutzt, mein großes Spindelequipment für unterwegs mal wieder neu zusammenzustellen.

Today I received an invitation for a spinning contest. Although I’m a real noob regarding speed spinning (well, I’m not on the run, after all), I definately want to participate, just for the spirit. I don’t know yet wheater to start with a wheel or with a spindle, but I took the opportunity to redo my large spinning equipment “to go”.

Im Beutel befinden sich verschiedene Fasern, meist kleinere Mengen, die sich für das Spinnrad nicht lohnen. Außerdem findet dort die Ägäische Spindel Platz, die für die Seitentaschen zu sperrig ist. Dort sind zwei weitere Spindeln (eine originale Akha und eine Bosworth-Kopfspindel aus Pink Ivory) untergebracht, außerdem eine Nostepinne, ein kleiner Rocken fürs Handgelenk, eine Niddy-Noddy, ein Wollkamm aus meinem Lieblingsmaterial (Knochen) und ein Messer (für verhedderte Fäden).

In the bag there are different kind of fibres, mostly smaller amounts, not worth using a wheel for. Besides this, it’s the place for an Aegean spindle, too cumbersome for the side pockets. In these there are two more spindles (an original Akha and a Bosworth top-whorl made of pink ivory), a nostepinne, a small wrist distaff, a niddy noddy, a comb made of my favourite material (bone), and a small knife (for cutting threads).

Dies ist das neueste Mitglied der Jenkins-Familie, die ägäische Spindel. Es ist eine großartige Allround-Spindel, die gut zu transportieren ist, da man sie auseinandernehmen kann. Ich spinne gerade Shetlandwolle darauf, ein Souvenir aus meinem letzten Urlaub.

This is the latest member of the Jenkins spindle familiy, the Aegean spindle. It’s a gorgeous allrounder which is – as all Turkish spindles are – good for using on the go because it can be disassembled. Currently I’m spinning Shetland combed top on it, a souvenir from my last holidays.

Since there was some interest for the spindle quiver I designed for Turkish Spindles, I decided to write down the pattern. It can be found here for download.

Stricken ist momentan nur sehr eingeschränkt möglich, ebenso wie fast alles andere auch; es ist einfach zu heiß. Wobei dies keine Beschwerde ist, sondern eine Feststellung (ich beschwere mich aus Prinzip nicht über das Wetter, da das nichts bringt). Heute war ich wieder an meinem Sommer-Geheimplatz; eine grüne Oase mitten in der Stadt, wo erstaunlicherweise nur wenig Menschen sind, obwohl es dort unglaublich erholsam ist (dafür ist der Stadtpark überfüllt, hähä). Ich hatte keine Lust auf den Fotoapparat, daher dieses sehr unbefriedigende Handyfoto.

At the moment knitting is not really a bliss, like with almost every other occupation. It’s just too hot. By the way, this is no complaint but a mere diagnosis (I never complain about the weather since this won’t change anything). Today I visited my secret summer whereabouts, a green oasis in the city of Hamburg. Unlike the Stadtpark it’s never too crowded. Since I didn’t feel like taking the camera with me, here a rather unsatisfying picture taken with the mobile phone.

Auf meinem natürlich schattigen Platz breitete ich mich zunächst aus: Picknickutensilien (Tee, Hummus, Fladenbrot, Wassermelone), Buch, Hörbuch, Handarbeitskram. Stricken ist nur eingeschränkt möglich; erträglich ist nur das Blumentuch, doch das ist zum Mitnehmen nicht mehr so geeignet. Also musste ich improvisieren.

Of course I sat in the shadow, and I put my stuff around me: food and drinks for a picknic (tea, pitta bread, hummus, water melon), a book, an audio book, crafty stuff. Since I just can stand to knit the Seyfarth shawl which meanwhile is too large to take it with me, I had to improvise.

Ich habe ein wenig gesponnen – auch wenn man abseits des Wegs sitzt, braucht man gute Nerven – die Leute nähern sich ungefähr so, als wäre man ein ganz seltenes Exemplar von Zootier. Außerdem habe ich Nadelbinden geübt und ein wenig Brettchenweben – über das Ergebnis des Letzteren schweigen wir; ich übe noch. Langeweile kommt jedenfalls nicht auf; bei diesen Aufenthalten bin ich für Stunden ausgerüstet. Morgen gehe ich wieder hin, aber da packe ich auch noch Herrn Jinx ein.

I spun a bit with my hand spindle, but even if you don’t sit where people pass by, you really need good nerves – people approach you as if you were a very rare species at the zoo. And I practiced naalbinding and card weaving – I won’t discuss the result of the latter, I’m a beginner and still practicing. But I never get bored, I’m always equipped for spending hours there. Tomorrow I’ll go there again, but then I’ll take Mr. Jinx with me.

Auch wenn es alles, was es gibt, irgendwie auch in gestrickt gibt, dies ist keine Vuvuzela, sondern ein handgesponnenes und gefilztes Gehäuse für eine türkische Spindel mittlerer Größe.

Everything that dwells on earth exists somehow in a knitted version as well, but this is not a vuvuzela, but a handspun and felted quiver for a medium size Turkish spindle.

Türkische Spindeln sind zerlegbar und einfach zu transportieren, wenn sie leer sind, aber wenn sich bereits Garn darauf befindet, wird es schwieriger. Kleine Exemplare kann man gut in Dosen verstauen, aber bei größeren ist das benötigte Behältnis einfach zu groß. Daher entschloss ich mich, ein praktisches und formschönes (?) Gehäuse zu entwerfen, um meine türkischen Spindeln besser transportieren zu können.

Turkish spindles can be deconstructed and are easy to take with you when they’re empty. But when there is already some yarn on them, it’s more difficult. Small spindles can be stored in boxes quite well, but when they’re too big the container is just too voluminous for being transported in a handbag. Therefore I decided to design a practical and well-shaped (?) quiver for taking my Turkish spindles with me.

Das Modell Pixie stellt den Prototypen dar. Die Wolle habe ich mit der Spindel gesponnen, der handgefärbte Kammzug (schottische Wolle) stammt von lollipop.yarns by filzflash. Zweifach verzwirnt, verstrickt und mit der Hand gefilzt. Das Modell Magic Mushroom ist in Planung.

The design Pixie is a prototype. I spun the roving with a spindle,plied it (2-ply), knitted and felted it by hand. The roving is handdyed (scottish wool) and comes from lollipop.yarn by filzflash.

Dies ist das Gehäuse im geschlossenen Zustand. Die Spindel ist gut geschützt, und der Karabinerhaken sorgt für einen sicheren Verschluss.

This is the quiver when it’s closed. The spindle is well protected, and the snap-hooks locks it firmly.

Ich bin ja relativ unerschrocken, und wenn ich in Foren lese, dass Leute gern mal Silk Hankies spinnen würden, sich aber nicht trauen, die zu bestellen, dann denke ich mir … na, lassen wir das. Ich habe es jedenfalls ausprobiert, mit einer leichten Spindel (für den Connaisseur: Threadsthrutime, Palm- und Ebenholz, türkisch, tiny). Und es geht ganz hervorragend und sehr leicht, nicht dieser Rutschekram, mit dem man sich sonst beim Verspinnen reiner Seide herumschlägt. Allerdings muss man recht kräftig ziehen. Wieder was gelernt.

I’ m a rather adventurous crafter, and when I read in some internet boards that people would like to test spinning silk hankies but don’t have the courage to order some, I’m thinking … well, let’s change the topic. I just tried it, and it’s easy and works extemely well. Nothing of this slippery stuff you have to deal with when spinning silk roving. I used a lightweight spindle (for the connoisseur: Threadsthrutime, palmwood and ebony, Turkish, tiny). But one thing is different: compared to spinning with silk or silk blends you have to pull quite aggressively. Well, I’ve learned something again.
