Der Workshop ist vorbei, und langsam sackt das Erlebte: die neuen Leute, das neu gelernte, die Atmosphäre, die geballte Kreativität. Außerdem können acht Stunden Spinnen an einem Tag ganz schön anstrengend sein.

The workshop for advanced spinners is over, and now I’ve processed a lot of it in my mind: meeting new people, learning new things, the atmosphere, the cumulative creativity. Besides this, eight hours of spinning for a day can be pretty exhausting.

Ich hatte mich ja entschlossen, an diesem Wochenende mal völlig neue Wege zu gehen, abseits von dem, was ich sonst immer tue, und das ist mir gelungen (wobei ich mit so etwas nicht wirklich Schwierigkeiten habe). Ich habe Materialien und Farben verwendet, auf die ich von mir aus nicht gekommen wäre, und ich habe sie zu Garnen versponnen, die ich zu Hause bisher nicht gesponnen habe, was nicht nur an der technischen Unzulänglichkeit lag.

I decided before that I would try something completely new this weekend, to do what I normally never do, and this worked out pretty well (but I have no difficulties with trying something new at all). I used materials and colours which never came to my mind before, and I created yarns with them I haven’t spun before, and the lack of knowledge of the technical details was not the only reason for this.

Wie ich bereits schrieb, bin ich sehr zufrieden, und nun beobachte ich, wie sich das, was ich während des Workshops lernte und tat, ganz selbstverständlich mit dem verbindet, was ich normalerweise tue. Das ist eine spannende Erfahrung, zeigt es doch, dass ich mir neue Wege nicht nur aus der Ferne angeschaut habe, sondern dass ich die neuen Erfahrungen sinnvoll integrieren kann. Auf jeden Fall entsteht gerade etwas ganz Eigenes.

As I wrote before, I’m very satisfied with the results of this workshop, and now I feel how the things I learned in class combine in a very natural way with the things I normally do, and this is a thrilling experience. It proves that I don’t just try out new things, but that I’m able to integrate them in a way that makes sense to me. There are new things to come.

Ich habe jedenfalls mein geliebtes Henkys entstaubt, das Rad, das gutmütig alles mitmacht, und ein Garn in einer Technik gesponnen, die ich mir während des Workshops abgeschaut habe, für die jedoch nicht genügend Zeit blieb. Es ist ein Beitrag für einen Forenwettbewerb mit dem Thema “Mythologie”. Ich habe zwei verschiedene grüne Fasern (Corridale solid, Merino semi-solid) und ungebleichtes Leinen versponnen. Mein Thema ist “The Green Man”. Gewinnen werde ich damit nicht, denn das Garn ist zu wenig ausgefallen; ich habe mich entschieden, auf das Einspinnen plakativer Goodies zu verzichten und nur die Fasern wirken zu lassen. Technisch ist das Ganze sehr einfach: Man verspinnt ein Garn für sich und eines mit Leinen, und beim Zwirnen lässt man mal das eine, mal das andere dominieren.

Well; I blew the dust from my beloved Henkys spinning wheel and spun a yarn, still full of impressions. I tried out a technique I watched others doing during class (I didn’t find the time to do so). This will be contributed to a competition in a spinning community, the theme is “Mythology”. I spun two different kinds of green wool roving (semi-solid merino and solid corridale and some linen fiber). The theme of it is “The Green Man”. This won’t win, it’s not unusual enough, and I abstained from spinning some goodies in but decided to let the fibers do the whole job alone. Technically it’s quite easy: I spun two bobbins, one with the semi-solid merino, one with the solid corridale, mixed with some unbleached linen fibers. When I plied I let dominate the two singles alternately.

Dieses Wochenende habe ich eine Art Wochenendurlaub gemacht, allerdings ohne Übernachtung außer Haus und ohne die Stadt zu verlassen: Ich habe einen Spinnkurs für Fortgeschrittene besucht, zu dem Jana Muchalski eingeladen hatte.

This weekend I took a time off, without being away from home during nighttime and without leaving Hamburg. I attended a workshop for the advanced spinner.

Ich versprach mir davon, neue Techniken zu lernen und vor allem meinen Horizont zu erweitern. Es ging einfach um den Spaß am Machen, die Lust am Material, ohne ergebnisorientiertes Denken oder die Frage “Was mache ich jetzt konkret damit?”. Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht.

I wanted to learn some new techniques, to have fun with spinning, with the materials provided, without thinking what to do with the results … just spinning. And I was not disappointed at all.

Wir waren sechs Teilnehmerinnen, alles sehr nette Frauen, und wir waren zunächst erschlagen von der Fülle des Materials. Es gab Rohwolle aller Art, natur, tierischer, pflanzlicher und künstlicher Herkunft, es gab Glitzerkram, eine Fülle verschiedenster Garne, Flocken, Locken, Filzkugeln, und wir konnten aus dem Vollen schöpfen.

We were six students, all of them very nice and friendly, and all of us were crushed down by the multitude of the material provided. There were rovings of all kinds (plant fibers, animal fibers, artificial stuff, natural shades, plant dyed fibers, acid dyed fibers, locks, flakes, glitzy stuff, all kind of plying yarns, felted items …), and we could use whatever pleased us.

Ich hatte mich entschlossen, meine üblichen Vorlieben für dieses Wochenende außer acht zu lassen und mich auf Neues einzulassen, was sich in den von mir hergestellten Garnen niederschlägt.

I decided to leave my usual yarn preferences aside and to try something completely new, and this shows in the yarns I spun during the weekend.

Wir hatten zwölf Stunden Zeit, um uns, die Materialien und alle möglichen Techniken auszuprobieren, acht Stunden am Samstag und vier am Sonntag. Zunächst sollten wir ein “Einstiegsgarn” spinnen, ohne Anleitung, einfach, was uns einfällt. Ich blickte finster auf den frischgefallenen Schnee und spann “Awaiting Spring”, ein weiches Garn aus einer Merino-Seidenmischung mit bunten Texelflocken und mit einem schwarzen Faden verzwirnt.

We had twelve hours to try materials, all kind of techniques and ourselves (eight on Saturday, four on Sunday). For warming up we spun a yarn without any suggestions or instructions, just what came to our minds, and I gave the freshly fallen snow outside a dirty look and spun “Awaiting Spring”, a soft yarn spun of a silk-merino blend with colourful flakes (Texel), plied with a black thread.

Dann ging es los mit den verschiedenen Techniken, die Jana wirklich anschaulich und geradezu idiotensicher erklärt hat – Erfolgserlebnisse bei entsprechenden Vorkenntnissen waren garantiert. Ich – entschlossen, alles anders zu machen als sonst, auch was die Materialien anging, spann ein Dick-dünn-Garn, das dann mit einem passenden Faden zu weichen Coils verzwirnt wurde.

Then we began to adapt different techniques which Jana explained really clearly and idiot-proof – success granted. I decided to leave the usual paths completely and spun a thick-thin yarn which I plied with a thin thread into soft coils.

Danach zog mich ein ausgefallenens Noppengarn an, und es entstand dieses Garn aus Blue Faced Leicester, einem raueren Vlies und einem Lurexfaden.

After I mastered thisone I was attracted by an unusual slub yarn, and I spun the following yarn, using Blue Faces Leicester, a green fleece and a lurex thread.

Dicht auf dem Fuße folgte eine Art Dreadlock-Garn aus aquafarbenem Blue Faced Leicester, verzwirnt ebenfalls mit einem Lurexfaden.

This was followed immediately by a greenish-blue dreadlock yarn made of Blue Faced Leicester, plied with a lurex thread again.

Die Zeit reichte nur noch, um ein echtes Dochtgarn anzufangen, für das ich das Material aus verschiedensten Komponenten selbst kardierte. Beendet habe ich dieses Garn am Sonntag.

There was not much time left, so I carded some components into a soft batt which I wanted to use for a corespun yarn which I finished on sunday.

Mein Favorit war die nächste Arbeit, weiße Supercoils aus derselben Merino-Seidenmischung, die ich auch für mein Anfangsgarn verwendete. Ich bin richtig verliebt in die reiche, opulente Struktur des Garns, die keine Farbe braucht.

My very favourite was the next task, white supercoils spun of the same merino-silk blend which I already used for the intial yarn. I really fell for the rich, opulent structure of this yarn which doesn’t need any colour.

Danach kam der Härtetest: Wir sollten etwas spinnen, was wir eigentlich zutiefst ablehnten, was uns total widersprach. Ich entschied mich für einen wilden Mix aus allen möglichen Materialien, die ich in zufälliger Reihenfolge verspann. Es ist wirklich alles dabei, von unbehandelten Gotlandlocken bis zu Glitzerkram. Zum Zwirnen verwendete ich verschiedenfarbige dünne Baumwollfäden und die Wilde-Netzzwirn-Technik.

After I finished thisone (which made me really happy), the hardest task ever was to be done: We were told to spin something we really hated, what we never ever would just think of. I decided to try a wild mixture of all kinds of fibres, from natural gotland locks to glitz. I plied this with thin cotton yarn in three different shades and used the “wild netted plying” technique.

Jana ist eine Lehrerin, die zu inspirieren und zu instruieren versteht, ohne zu dominieren, und ich habe eine Menge Ideen mitgenommen und ganz nebenbei mein Spektrum an Spinntechniken gewaltig erweitert. Das Wochenende ging viel zu schnell zu Ende, und ich werde bestimmt wieder so einen Workshop belegen.

Jana is a teacher who knows to inspire and to instruct without dominating. I took a bunch of ideas with me, and as a side effect, I learned many new techniques. The weekend came to an end too quicky, and I definately will attend such a workshop again.

Those of us who take the idea of recycling really serious can make yarn virtually from everything, even from old newspapers. Works without messing with water, as I read here.

Dies ist der zweite Versuch, mir eine Badetasche zu stricken, nachdem ich letztes Jahr den ersten wegen zu großer Gruseligkeit aufgegeben habe. Diesmal verwende ich handgesponnenes Baumwollgarn (das Zeuch muss ja auch weg …), das ich mit dunklerem, naturfarbenen Leinen kombinieren werde. Es wird ein eigener Entwurf, und vielleicht klappt es ja dieses Mal tatsächlich …

This is my second attempt to knit a beach bag, after I gave up the first one last year – it looked just awful. I’m using handspun cotton this time, which I’ll combine with darker linen. It’ll be my own design, and maybe it will work this time sufficiently.

Außerdem mein allererstes Baumwollgarn, das aussieht wie ein echtes Anfängergarn (was daran liegt, dass es ein Anfängergarn IST). Es ist wunderbar weich und gefällt mir sehr. Gesponnen mit einer schweren Apfel-Takhli (supported natürlich), 10 WpI.

And my very first cotton yarn which looks like a real beginner’s yarn (well, in fact this is what it is). It’s really soft, and I like it very much. Spun with a heavy apple takhli (supported, of course), 10 WpI.

Ich habe mich entschlossen, meine ganzen Testfäden mal zu verzwirnen, auch um das zu üben, und dies ist der erste. Die Singles stammen noch aus meiner generellen Handspindel-Übungsphase, aber es sieht ganz lustig aus. Für irgendwas werde ich es schon verwenden können, und wenn es als “waste yarn” ist, das in Anleitungen immer wieder nachgefragt wird.

I decided to ply all my exercise- and test-yarns, and this is the first one. The singles were spun during my “I really want to practice handspinning with a spindle”-time, but it looks quite funny. I’ll use it somehow, maybe as “waste yarn” which is required quite frequently for knitting.

Natürlich musste ich die Spindel aus Mali sofort ausprobieren, und hier ist das Ergebnis: Ich habe die Merinofaser mitteldünn ausgesponnen, und es ging erstaunlich schnell. Die Spindel läuft sehr gut, und es macht richtig Spaß, sie zu benutzen.

Of course I had to give the Mali spindle a try immediately, and this is the result: I spun the merino fiber not too thin, and it went really fast. The spindle works very good, and it’s really fun to use it.

Mit der Übung kommt auch der Geschmack am Spinnen mit einer Supportspindel, ich bin nun an dem Punkt angelangt, wo ich auch bei diesem Spindeltyp entscheide, wie das Garn aussehen soll, dass ich spinne (und nicht umgekehrt).

After practicing spinning with a support spindle I started to like it, and I came to the point that I decide how the yarn I spin will look like.

Da ich zwei Schäfte habe, kann das Garn auf dem ersten ruhen, während ich mit der Spindel und dem zweiten Schaft weiterarbeiten kann.

Since I have two shafts for this spindle, the yarn can rest on the firstone while I can go on spinning with the second one.

Na ja, eigentlich ist es nur der Wirtel, den ich erstanden habe: einen großen, antiken Tonwirtel aus Mali. Die Schäfte kamen heute dazu, handgefertigt von einem Tischler aus Buchenholz.

Well, actually it’s just the whorl which I purcased recently, a large old clay whorl from Mali. She shafts were crafted by a carpenter, and the wood is beech.

Man steckt den Wirtel einfach auf den Schaft, da es eine große Supportspindel ist, ist keine weitere Sicherung nötig, das Teil hält auch so.

You just put the whorl on the shaft and you have a large support spindle. It’s not necessary to fix it with glue or splines. It just stays in place.

Für mich ist diese Spindel etwas ganz Besonderes, und ich werde sie hoch in Ehren halten.

For me this spindle is something very special, and I’ll cherish it.

Das Verspinnen von Baumwolle wirft einen nicht auf den Anfängerstatus als SpinnerIn zurück, aber es funktioniert völlig anders als das Verspinnen von Wolle, Alpaka & Co.

Spinning cotton doesn’t bring you back to a beginner’s status, but it’s completely different from spinning wool, mohair or alpaca fibres.

Mit einer handelsüblichen Fallspindel möchte ich Baumwolle nicht verspinnen, denn das Material ist wahnsinning kurzfaserig und außerdem sehr fragil: Einmal am Kardenband gezupft, und man hat eine Art Wattebausch in der Hand. In den Ländern, in denen Baumwolle verarbeitet wird, wurde daher vernünftigerweise die Supportspindel oder sehr leichte Akhas (ein Mittelding zwischen Support- und Fallspindel) das Mittel der Wahl.

Spinning cotton with an usual drop spindle may be the appropriate way for masochists, because the fibres are very short. Pulling the carded fibre makes handy small cotton wool balls quite easily. In the countries where cotton is spun traditionally, people always preferred support spindles or featherweight Akhas (a melange of support and drop spindles).

Es gibt außerdem noch ein paar gravierende Unterschiede beim Verspinnen von Baumwolle, an die man sich als wollgewöhnte Spinnexistenz erst mal gewöhnen muss.

• Während man beim Verspinnen von Wolle (Mohair, Alpaca) darauf achtet, dass nicht zu viel Drall in die Spinnfaser läuft, kann es bei Baumwolle gar nicht genug sein. Ich arbeite daran, mir meine wohltrainierte Stop-Bewegung abzugewöhnen. Falls man den Drall in der Faser nicht zulässt, kommen wieder die Wattebälle.
• Zumindest als Anfänger im Bereich des Baumwollspinnens bereitet man die Faser nicht durch Ausziehen vor, wenn die Spindel sich nicht schnell dreht. Sonst: => Wattebälle
• Es gibt kaum ein Zuviel an Drall. Wenn’s so richtig hart verdreht ist, hat man die Chance, dass der Faden hält. Sonst eher nicht. Die Folge sind zwar keine Wattebälle, aber ein wattiges, brüchiges Etwas, dem keine große Zukunft als Faden beschieden ist.

There are some major differences for cotton spinning, and a dedicated wool spinner has to get used to them.

• Spinning wool, mohair, alpaca means to keep most of the twist from the fiber, spinning cotton means: there can’t be enough twist running into the fiber while spinning. Momentarily I desperately try to get rid of the habit of stopping the twist before it reaces the bundle of fibres in my hand, a well-trained and very useful movement for dealing with wool. If you don’t allow the twist to run into the yet unspun cotton fiber, you’ll end with quite an amount of cotton wool balls.
• At least as long as you’re a beginner you won’t prepare the fiber before spinning by pulling handy parts when the spindle is not turning fast, you’ll end again with quite an amount of cotton wool balls.
• There can be hardly too much twist. When the fibre is twisted really tightly, you’ll have a chance the thread will last and not end up in … no, no cotton balls this time, but handy, short soft pieces.

Ich verspinne das Material bewusst dicker (ganz dünn habe ich auch schon hinbekommen, ist nicht so die Kunst, dünn geht bei Baumwolle ganz schnell), denn ich möchte mir irgendwann mal eine Badetasche anfertigen. Und es fängt sogar an, richtig Spaß zu machen.

I’m trying to spin sort of a thicker yarn. Btw: It’s not difficult to spin a thin thread with cotton, you’ll very quickly have something similar to the thickness of a sewing thread, but I want to knit a beach-bag … once. And it just starts to become the real fun.

Generell kann man sagen, dass es schon sehr von Vorteil ist, wenn man gut mit der Spindel spinnen kann; für Anfänger stelle ich mir das mit der Baumwolle  ganz gruselig vor. Es ist auch nicht schwer, mit einer Supportspindel zurechtzukommen, hier profitiert man sehr von bereits bestehender Erfahrung. Aber man muss ganz kräftig umdenken, an- und abtrainieren, damit es mit der Baumwolle klappt.

What I can tell by now: It’s a big advantage when you’re capable to process wool with a hand spindle, for absolute spinning novices it must be horrid to start with cotton. It’s not difficult at all to deal with a support spindle, one benefits from general spinning experience quite a lot. But one has to rethink spinning and leave some habits behind while adapting others anew for making it work.
Supportspindeln werden nicht nur für sehr kurzstapelige Fasern wie Baumwolle oder Kaschmir verwendet, sondern auch für hauchdünnes Lacegarn a la Orenburg. Man muss beim Spinnen darauf achten, dass die Spindel auf einer geeigneten Unterlage gleichmäßig und schnell läuft, andererseits hält man sie durch den gesponnenen Faden aufrecht, jedoch ohne Zug auf diesen meist noch sehr fragilen Faden auszuüben. Das ist am Anfang nicht ganz einfach, geht nach kurzer Zeit doch völlig selbstverständlich.

Support spindles are not only used for very short fibers like cotton or cashmere, but also for ultra-thin laceyarn like the Orenburg type. While spinning with tools like these you have to be careful to let the spindle run on a flat surface that allows fast and undisturbed runnings. It’s held upright by the thread you spin with it – without burdening the fragile thread by the spindle’s weight. In the beginning this is not so easy, but one gets used to it pretty quickly.

Heute trafen sich ein paar muntere Damen in Hamburg, die gern spinnen lernen wollten. Für mich war es das erste Mal, dass ich versucht habe, jemandem das beizubringen. Und ich bin froh, mitteilen zu können, dass ich damit Erfolg hatte, was sicherlich an den Schülerinnen lag und weniger an mir.

Today some jolly ladies met in Hamburg to learn spinning. For me it was the very first time I tried to teach this. And I’m happy to tell I succeded with my effords, but this must be credited to the students rather than to my teaching abilities.

Zunächst war man natürlich vorbereitet, hier der Beschulungskorb:

Of course I was well prepared, here is the basket with all the things one needs: Top and bottom whorl spindles and fibres. I chose some medium weight spindles, and this worked very well.

Kopf- und Fußspindeln, Fasern, alles war an Bord. Ich habe mich für Spindeln mittleren Gewichts entschieden, womit ich goldrichtig lag.

Die Damen lernten ausgesprochen schnell; es gab generell sehr wenig Geklöter (von den fallenden Spindel), und am Ende konnten alle einen tragfähigen, zusammenhängenden Faden präsentieren:

The ladies quickly absorbed the technique, only once a spindle fell to the ground, and at the end all of them were able a sustainable and coherent thread.
