Nachdem meine Unterwegsgestricke alle zu groß oder zu kompliziert geworden sind oder zu unangenehm zu stricken (in der Hitze), habe ich aus meinem bescheidenen Vorrat ein Projekt ausgewählt: die Jacke Tweedie von Hanne Falkenberg.

After all projects I used to knit when I was not at home became either too big or too complicated or too awkward to knit (it’s really hot here in Hamburg), I chose from my humble stash a project, it’s the Tweedie cardigan by Hanne Falkenberg.

Die Farben sind einfach genial, und trotz der Hitze verstrickt sich die nordische Wolle mit ihrem rauen, trockenen Griff sehr angenehm, im Gegensatz zu weichen Garnen wie Superwash-Merino oder Alpaka (die werden von Mutter Jinx übrigens “Gaykram” genannt …).

The colours are gorgeous, and although it’s a hot summer, the nordic wool with its rough texture and the rather dry feeling is acceptable to knit. What I don’t like now are very soft yarns like superwash merino or alpaca.

Das Strukturmuster lässt die Farben verfließen und ist zwar mindless, aber nicht geistestötend.

The structured patterns lets the colours blend into each other; it’ s mindless but not too boring.

Intarsienstrickerei war ja nicht so meins. Es ist eine wirklich einfache Technik, aber ich mochte sie nie und vermied sie, wo ich nur konnte – und da es sich hier um ein Hobby handelt, kann ich immer.

I really didn’t enjoy knitting intarsia at all, although it’s a really simple technique. But I never learned to like it and avoided to do it whenever I could – and I always could because knitting is my hobby and not my profession.

Der Hase änderte das jedoch – wenigstens ein bisschen. Um meine Idee für den diesjährigen Osterhasen für Mutter Jinx umzusetzen, kam ich an Intarsien nicht vorbei und stellte fest, dass es doch nicht so schlimm ist.

The rabbit changed everything – at least a bit. I had an idea for the annual easter rabbit for Mother Jinx, and for executing this properly I simply couldn’t avoid using intarsia, and I found out that it’s not that bad.

Und das war gut, denn jetzt brauche ich die Technik. Da wäre zunächst der Large Poppy Shawl von Christel Seyfarth. Die Mohnblumen müssen eine schwarze Umrandung am Kelch bekommen, sonst sieht es langweilig aus. Und wie dänische Anleitungen so sind, steht da nicht, wie die bewerkstelligt werden sollen (sondern eher “macht da mal schwarz …”). Viele sticken den schwarzen Kreis auf, aber das kann ich so gar nicht, also verwende ich eine etwas wirre Mischung aus Fair-Isle und Intarsientechnik.

And this was good, because now I have to use this technique. First there is the Large Poppy Shawl by Christel Seyfarth. The poppies call for a black border around the calyx, otherwise it looks boring. And with these instructions it’s as it is always with the ones written by Danish designers: it’s simply not mentioned how this black border has to be done (it’s more like “make a black border”). Some use embroidery for this, afterwards, but I’m really not into embroidery at all, and so I chose a rather weird mixture of stranded and intarsia knitting.

And then there is something else …

Ja, ich weiß. Viften ist immer noch nicht fertig zusammengenäht, und die Noro-Jacke hat erst einen halben Arm. Ihr könnt mir Tiernamen geben, aber es war stärker als ich. Ich musste einfach dieses wunderbare BC-Garn ausprobieren, und zwar für die Jacke Lange Schatten von Annette Danielsen. Die hat vorne zwei Paneele, die eben in Intarsientechnik gestrickt werden. Klar, man kann die auch irgendwie annähen, aber dann doch lieber Intarsien. Die Jacke gefällt mir so gut, dass ich richtig froh bin, dass ich Intarsien zumindest nicht mehr hasse, auch wenn es nie meine Lieblingstechnik werden wird.

Yes, I know. I didn’t sew Viften yet, and the Noro cardi just has half a sleeve. You can give me weird names, but it was stronger than me. I just had to try this wonderful yarn by BC, and I chose the cardigan Long Shadows by Annette Danielsen to do so. It has two contrasting panels in the front, and these are knit with intarsia. Of course they can somehow be sewn to the rest of the body, but before I do this, I rather prefer knitting intarsia. I like this cardigan so much that I’m happy not to hate intarsia any more (but it will never become my favourite technique, I’m sure).

Außerdem teste ich die große Fibersphere damit, und ich bin außerordentlich zufrieden: Beide Knäule wickeln einwandfrei ab, kein Gehedder, kein Geknote, nichts fliegt herum.

Besides this, I’m testing the large fiber sphere, and I’m very satisfied. Both balls unwind without any ado, the threads don’t get entangled, no knots, and everything stays in place.

Dies ist das Anstrickbild. Gemäß Frau Seyfarth erfolgt der Farbverlauf willkürlich. Natürlich stricke ich das Ding in Runden, mit Steeks. Die Farben stimmen leider nicht.

This is the starting picture. According to Ms. Seyfarth the colour gradient happens accidentally. Of course I’m knitting thisone in rounds with steeks. Unfortunately the colours don’t show like they are but like the camera made them up.

Bestellt.  Gewartet. Da. (Das Blumentuch von Christel Seyfarth, genauer gesagt: die Strickpackung.  Jawohl. Ihr habt richtig gehört: Blumen. Das liegt wohl daran, dass die Blumen dänischer Designer an mir nicht bescheuert aussehen.)

I ordered. I waited. Now it’s here. (The Large Poppy Shawl by Christel Seyfarth, exactly: the kit. Yeah, you got this right: it’s a flowery pattern. Maybe because the flowers designed by Danish designers do not look so stupid with me.)

Es hilft ja alles nix: Irgendwann müssen sie weg, so oder so. Ich habe mich also entschlossen, mich eines UFOs anzunehmen. Dies ist der Pullover Munken von Marianne Isager, begonnen vor zwei Jahren und fallengelassen, nachdem ich den Rücken relativ schnell beendet hatte. Der Grund waren die Intarsien unten.

Well, it has do be done, hasn’t it? One day they just have to go, in the one or the other aspect. So I decided to pick up one of my UFOs again. This is the Munken sweater by Marianne Isager. I started it two years ago and abandoned it after finishing the back rather quickly due to the fact I deeply dislike knitting intarsia.

Nun habe ich das Vorderteil beendet, aber wie es so ist: Mit einem Abstand von zwei Jahren würde man doch einiges anders machen. Daher muss in das obere Drittel des Rückens nochmal stricken, aber das macht nichts.

Now I finished the front, but as it always is: with a two years distance there are some details one would like to do a little different, and this means I have to reknit the upper third of the back. But it doesn’t matter.

Es kam ja die Frage nach dem Starmore-Pullover auf, und ich kann nur sagen: Es geht voran – wenn auch mühsam.

There was the question how far I got with the Starmore sweater, and I can tell: There is a progress, but a rather slow one.

Es macht nach wie vor riesigen Spaß, ihn zu stricken, und ich liebe ihn schon jetzt, aber er ist schwieriger als andere Projekte dieser Art. Das liegt vor allem daran, dass das Muster asymetrisch ist, d. h. es prägt sich nicht gut ein. Hinzu kommen die für traditionelle Fair-Isle-Pullover undenkbaren riesigen Rapporte: Einer ist 28 Maschen breit und 27 Reihen hoch. Da ist nicht viel mit Einprägen.

It’s still tons of fun to knit it, and I already love this sweater, but it’s more difficult to knit it than it was with other similar projects. The main reason is that the pattern is asymetrical, this means you can hardly memorize it. To make things worse, the pattern repeats are unbelievably large which is not typical for traditional fair-isle projects (well, this is none): it’s 28 stitches wide and 27 rows high. Frankly, you have to keep an eye on the chart almost all the time.

Zudem gibt es eine Eigenart, von der ich berichten will: Manche Reihen wollen einfach nicht. Während Reihe 1 – 5 sich mir leicht einprägen und ich sie nach maximal zwei Wiederholungen leicht aus dem Kopf stricke (wie das für viele andere Reihen auch gilt), ist Reihe 9 ein schwieriger Fall. Ebenso Reihe 14 und 16. Aber das ist alles gar nichts gegen Reihe 23. Oh, oh, die geht gar nicht. Die ist eine Katastrophe, denn sie hasst mich, diese Reihe, und ich frage mich jedes Mal, ob es mir nicht wenigstens ein Mal gelingt, sie ohne Zwischenfälle zu stricken (Die Antwort ist übrigens: Nein, es gelingt mir nicht).

Besides this, there is something weird about this pattern: Some rows simply don’t want to be knitted. Rows 1 – 5 are fairly easy, as many others. After knitting the repeat about two times, it’s fairly easy to memorize it and to know it by heart. Row 9 is rather difficult, as are rows 14 and 16. But this is nothing against row 23. Thisone really hates me, and I keep asking myself whether it will be possible to knit it without any trouble just for one time (the answer, of course, is no. It’s not possible to do so).

Unglücklicherweise ist es abends zu dunkel, um diesen Pullover zu stricken; denn bei elektrischem Licht sind sich die Farben zu ähnlich. Dies sind also die Gründe, warum es nur langsam vorangeht damit. Aber ich verzweifle nicht, denn nur noch ein paar Reihen, dann mache ich mich and die Ärmelsteeks.

Nordosteuropäische Handschuhe haben mich schon immer gereizt, und nun hatte ich ein Design gefunden, das mir wirklich gefällt und nicht zu traditionell ist (bin nicht so der Volkstrachtentyp). Das Kit hatte ich bereits vorgestellt, doch nun sind die Handschuhe fertig. Sie passen hervorragend und sind einfach zu stricken. Es gibt eine sehr ausführliche und deutliche Anleitung in englischer Sprache (und in finnisch, wer denn möchte) und Garn in mehr als ausreichender Menge (s. u.)

I fell for these Northeastern European style of mitts long ago, but I never found a design that really suited me, that’s not too traditional (I’m not really the type for folk costumes). I already showed the kit here, but now I also finished the mitts. They fit very well and are easy to knit. There is a very elaborate instruction (in English, or, if you prefer, in Finnish) included and plenty of yarn.

Die Reste: füllig / a lot of leftovers

Es macht wirklich Spaß, diese sorgfältig und liebevoll designten Handschuhe zu stricken (die Innenseite sieht anders aus, s. u.), und sie werden mit auch im Frühling noch gute Dienste auf dem Fahrrad leisten. Die Wolle ist übrigens für alle, die natürlichere Materialien bzw. naturbelassene Wolle lieben, ganz wunderbar.

It’s really fun to knit these carefully and elaborately designed mittens (the palm section looks quite different), and they’ll serve me well even during springtime while riding a bike. The yarn is fantastic for all who love a more natural kind of yarn.

Wir haben fast Mitte März, und ich möchte Osterglocken sehen (wäre allerdings auch mit Krokussen zufrieden), springende Lämmer, hüpfende Hasen, das volle Programm eben. Und was ist? Nix. Die Schneedecke ist immer noch ziemlich geschlossen, und es ist kalt.

It’s almost mid March, and I’d like to see some daffodils right now (or some crocusses at least), jumping lambs, hopping bunnies, the usual. And what’s about it? Nothing. The snow mantle is still pretty compact, and it’s cold outside.

Da ich stricktechnisch eher an großen Projekten herumprökele und nix zum Zeigen habe, habe ich beschlossen, dass ich einen schnellen Erfolg habe und außerdem den Frühling invozieren könnte. Was eignet sich besser als dieses schöne Handschuh-Kit von Riihivilla?

Since I’m working currently on large project which look pretty much the same all the time, I’ve nothing to show. So I decided I need a quick success and to invoke springtime. What’s more suitable for these purposes than this handsome mittens kit by Riihivilla?

Das Garn ist ganz nach meinem Geschmack: Reine, naturbelassene Wolle, die teilweise mit Pflanzenfarben gefärbt wurde. Zudem wollte ich schon immer mal einen klassischen Handschuh aus dem nordöstlichen Kulturkreis stricken.

The yarn is exactly my cup of tea, it’s pure, natural finnsheep wool, some of the colours are dyed with plants or mushrooms. Besides this, I always wanted to knit a classic mitten from the north eastern hemisphere.

Das Kit kommt per Post, ist liebevoll verpackt und enthält die benötigte Garnmenge, eine ausführliche Anleitung mit farbigen charts und ein Foto des fertigen Handschuhs.

The kit is sent by mail, very prettily packed and contains the yarn neccessary for the project, a detailed instruction with a coloured graph and a picture of the mitten.
