Manchmal erschließen sich neue Hobbies, auch wenn man damit nicht rechnet und an sich schon genug zu tun hat, und – erstaunlich, aber wahr – haben sie nichts mit “Crafting” im weiteren Sinne zu tun. Ich habe das Lockpicking für mich entdeckt.

Sometimes you discover an new hobby, even if you actually have enough to do and – my readers will be slightly surprised – it has nothing to do with crafting in a broader sense. So I found out lockpicking is really fun.

Das zerstörungsfreie, legale Entsperren von Schlössern ist eine Art Geduldspiel, man braucht Fingerspitzengefühl und Geduld (also ideal für StrickerInnen, denn die haben normalerweise beides). Außerdem braucht man natürlich Schlösser und ein Pickset (auch Dietriche genannt), ein Schraubstock ist von Vorteil, aber nicht unbedingt nötig.

Opening a lock without a key and without destroying it is a kind of a puzzle, you need a sure instinct and some patience (so it’s ideal for knitters, because they usually have both). Besides this, you need a pickset and some locks. A bench vice may be useful, although it’s not mandatory.

Und ja, es ist legal, Schlösser zu öffnen, solange sie einem selbst gehören oder man es mit Einverständnis des Eigentümers tut. Es gibt sogar einen Sportverein, und in dem bin ich Mitglied geworden (Sport ist ja gesund). Es ist eine ganz spezielle Art von Nerds, die man dort antrifft, und für mich passt das.

Yes, it’s completely legal to do lockpicking when you open your own locks or do it with the owner’s permission. There is even a sports club, and I became a member. It’s a very special kind of nerds you meet there, and it’s completely suitable for me.
