Vor Monaten bereits gab es in einer Landlust-Ausgabe Strickpackungen zum bestellen, und dies ist eine davon. Nach gravierenden Lieferengpässen kam das Ding endlich ein, zwei Knäule wunderbaren Kilcarra-Tweeds und die Anleitung. Angeboten war der Schal in Petrol, geliefert wurde eine Blaubeerfarbe, die ich jedoch behielt, weil sie mir gut gefällt.

Months ago the German Landlust magazine offered some knitting kits to order, and this is one of them. After they had been overrun by orders the kit arrived finally: two balls of a wonderful Kilcarra tweed and the instructions. The scarf was offered in teal, but the yarn has a blueberry shade. I decided to keep it since I like it.

Die Anleitung ist denkbar einfach: glatt rechts stricken und zum Schluss Maschen fallen lassen, das ist alles. Hätte ich auch ohne hinbekommen, aber ich wollte das Material testen. Nach dem Stricken filzte ich den Schal in der Waschmaschine an (Schongang), was gut funktionierte und nicht zu viel Länge gekostet hat.

Knitting is really easy: it’s simply stockinette, and at the end you’ll have to drop several stitches, and that’s it. I would have done this easily without any further help or instructions, but I wanted to try the Kilcarra Tweed. After knitting Islightly  felted the scarf in my washing machine. It worked very well, and the scarf didn’t shrink too much.

Ja, es läuft nicht immer so, wie es sollte, so auch mit diesem Teil. Das sollte eigentlich etwas anderes werden, doch dafür ist es viel zu groß. Daher habe ich es umgewidmet, zu einem Behältnis für mittelgroße Projekte.

Well, things don’t always work out as they’re expected to do, like thisone. It was supposed to become something completely different, but it turned out to be much too big. Therefore I use it now for medium size projects.

Der Projektklops wurde in einem Stück gestrickt, in der Waschmaschine gefilzt und anschließend befüllt. Oben hat er eine Schlaufe, sodass man ihn auch aufhängen kann.

The Project Dumpling was knitted in one piece, felted in the washing machine an filled with a project. On top it has a loop for hanging it … well, somewhere.

Perfekt sind sie nicht geworden, die gestrickten und gefilzten Kraniche, die den gefalteten aus Origamipapier nachempfunden sind, aber für meine Zwecke wird es reichen. Der Grund dürfte sein, dass die Wolle einfach zu dick war (dafür bin ich das Einzelknäul aus Drops Eskimo jetzt los, und das ist auch schön).

They didn’t com out perfectly, the knitted and felted cranes worked after the ones made of origami paper, but they’ll do for my purpose. The reason might be that the yarn I used was just too thick (but I got rid of the single ball of Drops Eskimo, and that’s fine.)

Bereits 2007 habe ich Studio Long von Hanne Falkenberg gestrickt, und ich war richtig begeistert, obwohl er sehr groß war. Leider wurde er nach einer Wäsche noch größer, und dieser Prozess setzte sich fort, bis das Teil untragbar wurde. Er verschwand in meinem Schrank, wo ich ihn fast vergaß.

In 2007 I knitted Studio Long by Hanne Falkenberg, and I was really enthused although it was really big from the very beginning. Unfortunately it grew bigger and bigger after washing and wearing it, until it vanished in my wardrobe – unworn and almost forgotten.

Einen dritten Schrankwinter wollte ich jedoch nicht für ihn, und so entschloss ich mich zu einem Filzversuch in der Waschmaschine. Ich wusch ihn bei 30 Grad mit Schmierseife und bei reduziertem Schleudergang – und er kam einfach perfekt heraus. Das Gestrick wurde wunderbar dicht (und filzig natürlich), Ärmellänge, Länge und Weite sind auf den Punkt gelungen. Plan B (für den Fall, dass der Filzprozess nicht funktioniert, war übrigens, Handstulpen, Nadelkissen und eine Tasche o. ä. daraus zu machen, aber das ist ja nun nicht nötig.

I didn’t want a third winter in the darkness of my wardrobe and so I decided to make an attempt with felting. I washed it in my washing machine, 30 degr. celsius, reduced tumbling, together with a bit of soap, and it came out just perfect. The fabric became dense and cozy and  – of course – felty, the length of sleeves and body and the withs came out exactly as they are supposed to be. Of course I had an alternative plan, just in case it would not work: I wanted to make mitts, pincushions and maybe a bag of it, but this is not necessary at all.

Zwar schon vor meinem Urlaub angefertigt, zeige ich es erst jetzt: die zweite Aufgabe meines Online-Filzkurses. Es ging wieder um Stickerei, und diesmal waren es so viele Stiche, dass ich nur eine Auswahl getroffen habe.

I finished thisone before I went on holiday, the second homework for the online felting class. It was about embroidery again, and there were so many stitches that I selected some of them.

Obwohl ich noch neu auf dem Gebiet bin, habe ich schon einige Vorlieben entdeckt:

• Ton-in-Ton-Stickerei
• feine Linien
• abstrakte oder stark stilisierte Formen und Symbole
• ungewöhnliche Materialien

Durch meinen Urlaub bin ich etwas im Verzug, aber ich freue mich auf die nächste Lektion, da geht es um das Herstellen plastischer Formen mittels Stickerei.

Although I’m a newbie in the embroidery business, I already found some preferences:

• monochrome embroidery
• fine lines
• abstract or heavily simplified motives and symbols
• unusual materials

Due to my stay on the Shetland Isles I fell a bit behind with the class, but I really look forward to the next lesson, it’s about reliefs witht the help of embroidery.

Die erste Woche ist vorbei, und ich habe mich stets bemüht, die erste Aufgabe zu bewältigen. Zunächst wurde ein Stück Filz benötigt, und da ich das Uhrenhäuschen nicht zu Übungszwecken verschandeln wollte, habe ich mir etwas Passendes gefilzt. Ich habe nicht auf Gleichmäßigkeit geachtet, es ist unterschiedlich dick, was für den Zweck eher von Vorteil ist. Auch habe ich auf das Beschneiden der Ränder verzichtet.

The first week of the online felting class I attend is over, and I really tried to accomplish the first task. First of all I needed a piece of felted fabric, and since I didn’t want to mutilate the small watch housing with my humle effords, I prepared the required item. I didn’t care about a regular thickness or cutting the irregular borders, and this is perfect for the purpose.

Zunächst wird nämlich gestickt, und das ist für mich besonders gruselig, denn das kann ich nicht. Habe ich außer mal kurz in der ersten Gymnasialklasse nie getan, fand ich immer irgendwie langweilig. Aber da ich, ,wenn ich Leuten was vermittele, immer predige, sich auf Neues einzulassen und erst nach dem Lernprozess zu entscheiden, was davon man für seine eigene Praxis verwenden will, kann ich mich nun schlecht drücken. Es geht um “freies Sticken”, also ohne Vorlagen oder Zählen und auch meist ohne Vorzeichnung. Da man auf meinem Filzstück ohnehin keine Vorzeichnung sieht, habe ich ganz frei gearbeitet.

The first task is embroidery, and this is really horrid to me, because I never really did this, except for a very short time during the first term of grammar school. I always thought it’s boring. But since I always preach to my own students to engage with something first and rejecting it later, when one finds out it doesn’t fit her or his work, I hardly could avoid trying. Here it’s all about “free embroidery” without any pattern or stitch counting, and often without a preparatory drawing. Because my piece of felt is not suitable for drawing on it, I worked completely free.

Dies sind also meine allerersten Stickversuche, und ich muss sagen, es könne schlimmer sein. Manches sieht gar nicht schlecht aus, und Spaß hat es auch gemacht, wobei mir einige Stiche mehr liegen als andere. Ich sticke jeden Tag ein bisschen, und dies wird also eine Art Mustertuch.

These are the very first embroidery attempts of mine, and I have to confess, it could be worse. Some of these don’t look too bad, and it was sort of fun. Of course there are stitches I like better than others. I’m working every day a bit on it, and this will become a kind of sampler.

Mutter Jinx lacht sich immer tot, wenn ich irgendwelche Behältnisse für irgendwas zusammenprökele (und ist überfordert, wenn ich ihr solche Behältnisse dann schenke …), aber ich kann einfach nicht anders. Bei mir muss alles irgendwie sein Häuschen haben.

Mother Jinx always dies laughing when I produce any box, basket or other container for the many things I own (and really feels overstrained when she gets one as a present …), but it’s stronger than me: everything needs a sort of housing.

So auch die Taschenuhr, die ich vor einiger Zeit erwarb. Ich habe die passende Kette dafür gefunden, außerdem die passenden Verschlüsse für die Kette (die keine hatte, aber es ist eine antike, sehr ungewöhnliche Kette aus England), nur ein Behältnis für die Uhr fehlte noch. Dem habe ich jetzt abgeholfen, und inspiriert hat mich der Filzkurs, zu dem ich mich angemeldet habe. Ich habe also meinen ersten Versuch im Nassfilzen seit langer Zeit hinter mir.

It’s the same for the pocket watch I purchased some time ago. I found a matching chain, and the fastenings for it (it came without, but it’s an antique and very unusual one from England). Only a place to store the watch still had to be found. And this is what I made today. I was inspired by the online wet felting class I applied for, and this is my very first attempt in wet felting for quite a long time.

Es hat richtig Spaß gemacht, und es hat auch gut geklappt; die innere blaue Schicht verband sich sogar einigermaßen mit der äußeren, mehrfarbigen. Ich habe einen großen Gummiball umfilzt und dann die Kugel aufgeschnitten und den Ball entfernt. Ob ich das Teil noch weiter verziere, weiß ich nicht; da kann ich mir Zeit lassen, lustig finde ich es jetzt schon.

It was really fun to felt this, and it worked out well: the inner blue layer connected well with the outer, multicoloured one. I felted it around a large gum ball, cut the felting and took the ball out. Whether I’ll do further embellishments I’m not sure yet, but I’m in no hurry anyway. I think it looks quite funny as it is right now.

Das Material ist Rohwolle in Blau (ich weiß nicht mehr, woher ich das habe), die äußere Schicht ist aus Schottischer Wolle von lollipop.yarns by filzflash, und es ist dasselbe Material, das ich für Pixie verwendet habe.

Ich habe mich für eine undekorierte Version mit klaren, hellen Farben entschieden, und ich bin sehr zufrieden. Das Ding passt, gefällt mir und gibt mir einen Touch ins Historisierende.

I decided to do an undecorated version with clear, light colours, and i’m very satisfied with it. The hat fits well, I like it and it gives me a touch of historicized flair.

Ich habe ja bei Janas Verlosung diesen zauberhaften Verwandler gewonnen, und was soll ich sagen? Er wirkt schon, und das, obwohl er noch gar nicht da ist.

Als ich von der Verlosung las und den Verwandler sah, dachte ich sofort “Den will ich!”, und hinterließ einen Kommentar. Ich schraubte meine Erwartungen auf ein realistisches Maß herunter (“So ein Strang handgefärbter Wolle wäre auch ganz schön”) und vergaß das Ganze. Dann erreichte mich gestern Janas Mail, und ich fiel aus allen Wolken.

Er kommt sehr gelegen, der Verwandler, da ich gerade dabei bin, mein Zimmer umzuräumen, und da wird er einen Ehrenplatz erhalten, besser gesagt, mehrere Ehrenplätze, denn ich denke, das Teil soll und will in Bewegung bleiben. Momentan sehe ich ihn als Wandbehang – und ich bin gespannt, ob die Katze gleich mitkommt. .

Und da der Verwandler ja verwandeln soll, habe ich mich bei einem Online-Filzkurs angemeldet. Ich hatte ja mal einen solchen Kurs bei der Volkshochschule besucht, und ich überlege schon länger, diesen Kurs im Internet zu machen. Nun habe ich mich entschlossen, den Verwandler als Zeichen zu sehen und zur Tat zu schreiten. Ich werde also hier mitmachen:
