Dieses Jahr möchte ich meine WiPs aufarbeiten, und dies ist das erste, das für gut (also fertigstellungswürdig) befunden wurde. Es ist ein Paar Stulpen nach eigener Idee, die ich Matching a Gansey genannt habe.

This year I want to finish or frog my WiPs, and this is the firstone which I think is very well worth to finish. It’s a pair of mitts, designed by myself, and I call them Matching a Gansey.

Gestrickt werden sie aus Shibui Sock in Helix-Technik.

Meine Crazy-Lace-Stola, wie ich sie momentan im Kopf habe, besteht aus drei, fließend ineinander übergehenden Musterabschnitten (ich hoffe zumindest, dass sie das tun werden), und dies ist der erste.

My Crazy Lace stole, as I have it in mind, consists of three parts which will blend harmonically into each other (at least, I hope so), and this is the firstone.

Dies sind zwei Details, links erkennt man die Perlen, die in diesem Abschnitt nur sparsam eingesetzt werden. recht ist der Rand zu erkennen, der eine Art Gestaltungsspielwiese ergibt, wenn ich meine perverse Idee umsetze (und momentan visualisiere ich das Ding nunmal so).

These are two details. On the left you can see a few beads which will be used sparsely in this part of the stole. On the right is a picture of the border which is sort of a playground for the weird idea I have in mind (if I’ll realize this, what I don’t know yet, but at the moment I visualize it this way).

Und wenn ich die Idee realisiere, wird es mit diesem Garn geschehen.

And if I’m going to realize it, it will be with this yarn.

Das mit dem “freien Geist”, der Inspiration und dem freeformenden Lacestricken ist gar nicht so einfach, wenn man Lacestrickerei immer mit dem Abzählen endloser Charts assoziiert (Herr Jinx nennt so etwas übrigens “das dröge Bohren dicker Bretter”). Aber es hilft ja nichts, irgendwie muss man anfangen. Und die Crazy-Lace-Technik ist ja sehr vergebend, sodass man nur den inneren Zensor überwinden muss.

It’s not so easy to let one’s spirit floating freely, getting some inspiration, and starting with the freeform lace knitting when you’re the one who associated lace knitting with endless countings of huge charts. But somehow I have to get started, and the Crazy Lace technique is rather forgiving, and so I just have to overcome my inner censorship.

Ich habe mich entschieden, völlig ohne Charts und völlig wild zu stricken, aber nicht ohne Plan. Das Ergebnis soll von absichtsvoller Zufälligkeit sein, und ich habe natürlich im Kopf, wie das Ganze aussehen soll. Desweiteren habe ich mich entschieden, quasi thematisch zu stricken; inspiriert von dem Song “Purple Rain” von Prince (oder wie immer der sich jetzt gerade nennt).

I decided to knit without any charts and completely wild, but not without a clue. The desired result is supposed to be of intentional randomness, and of course I have a picture in mind how the whole thing will look (once). Furthermore I decided to chose a theme, inspired by the song “Purple Rain” by Prince (or however he calls himself at the moment).

Das bedeutet, dass dies ein relativ dramatisches Stricktück wird, das gewissermaßen den Geist der Achtziger atmet. Es darf also bombastisch, kitschig, übertrieben usw. sein.

This means, of course, that this is going to be a rather dramatic garment, with will breathe the spirit of the eighties. It may very well be bombastic, kitschy, exaggerating.

Das brachte mich natürlich zur Frage der Garnauswahl. Das das Garn lila sein würde, ist klar, aber handgefärbt sollte es schon sein. Wie gut, dass ich einen Strang Lacegarn von lollipop.yarns in meinem bescheidenen Stash habe, das moderat mehrfarbig ist. Dazu habe ich die passenden Perlen ausgesucht (mit einem verführerischen Metallglanz), und außerdem habe ich noch eine ganz perverse Idee für das Finish, aber ob ich das wirklich tun werde, muss ich mir noch überlegen.

This brought me directly to the question which yarn to use. It’s rather logical to use a purple yarn, but it should be handdyed as well (as I felt). Lucky me, I have a skein of lace yarn from lollipop.yarns in my humble stash, which is moderately variegating. I chose matching beads (with a tempting metallic shine), and I have a really weird idea for a finish, but whether it will ever be executed I don’t know yet.

Als Einbeiein (Ravelry-Link) und ich am WWKIPD 2009 begannen, unsere Pläne für den WWKIPD 2010 zu machen, kamen wir auf die Idee, das Jahr zu nutzen, um ein wenig Guerilla Knitting zu betreiben. Einbeiein ging mit gutem Beispiel voran (wir arbeiten noch an den Labels, einstweilen muss es ohne gehen) und verschönerte ein Geländer, während ich heute meinen ersten Beitrag leistete: einen Baumgeist.

When Einbeiein (Ravelry-Link) and I started on WWKIPD 2009 to make some plans for the WWKIPD 2010 we fell for the idea to do some Guerilla Knitting during the year. Einbeiein set a good example and embellished a handrail, and I set my first Guerilla Knitting project free this afternoon. It’s a tree spirit.

Die perfekte Wandersocke – Der Prototyp / The perfect hiking sock – the prototype

Wer selbst wandert, wird wissen, dass es nicht immer so einfach ist mit den Socken, die man den ganzen Tag lang in festen Stiefeln trägt, und zwar auch bei durchaus sommerlichen Temperaturen. Das Thema mag banal erscheinen, doch wer schon einmal von ungeeigneten Wandersocken über mehrere Stunden nachhaltig belästigt wurde, weiß, dass man bei der Auswahl gar nicht genug Sorgfalt walten lassen kann.

If you enjoy hiking you’ll probably know that it may be somewhat difficult to find a pair of socks that really fits when worn in a heavy, tightly fitting pair of hiking boots, even in summertime. Maybe this sounds rather mundane, but if you have ever been tortured by a pair of inadequate pair of socks for a couple of hours, you’ll know that a pair of hiking socks is a serious subject of careful selection.

Ich ziehe selbstgestrickte Socken vor, da ich hier Material und Passform optimal beeinflussen kann, und dennoch bleiben genügend Fragen nach dem “wie stricken?” offen. Folgende Anforderungen habe ich an die perfekte Wandersocke gestellt, bevor ich loslegte mit dem Prototyp:

• Robustheit – Hier ist eine Sportwolle gefragt. MeraSilk, 100% Merino und ähnliche Luxusgarne halten der Belastung nicht stand.
• Perfekte Passform – Esoterische Muster und sonstigen Firlefanz kann man sich sparen, da sie eine potentielle Quelle für Druckstellen sind.
• Anschmiegsamkeit – Die Socke sollte den Fuß sanft umhüllen, ohne Hohlräume zu bilden oder zu locker zu sitzen. Ein faltiger Sockenstau im Zehenbereich ist unbedingt zu vermeiden.
• Fersenfrage – ich bin sonst hier durchaus liberal und stricke Socken oft, wie sie gemeint sind, also auch mit verzierten Käppchenfersen etc. Jedoch nicht hier. Wandersocken brauchen eine Ferse, von der man nicht merkt, dass sie überhaupt da ist. Außerdem sollte sie robust sein.
• Farbe – ist mir eigentlich egal. Aber kein Beige und keine Brauntöne. Nein, nein. Auf gar keinen Fall. Damit möchte ich nicht mal beerdigt werden. Wirklich nicht.

I learned to prefer handknitted socks since I have the ultimate control over material and fit, but there are of course still questions to answer, like “how to knit the perfect hiking sock”. These are the demands:

• Hard-wearing material. I prefer sport yarn. MeraSilk, 100% Merino and other luxury yarns are too delicate for this.
• The perfect fit – esoteric, elaborate patterns and other falderal are not recommendable, they are a potential source for sore spots, blisters and pressure spots.
• A close fit – the socks should wrap the foot tightly but softly without fitting too loose. A sock accumulated in the toe section of the foot should be avoided in any case.
• The perfect heel is very important. Which one you prefer depends on the shape of your foot; it should have a perfect fit and should be highly durable.
• Colour: Is not so important, but I don’t tolerate brown or beige. No, no, never!

Meine Meditationen ergaben nun folgendes Ergebnis meiner perfekten Wandersocke:

• Passform: Eine biedere 3-1-Rippe sorgt dafür, dass nichts drückt (auch kein Bündchen), die Socke sich aber faltenfrei um den Fuß schmiegt. Der Schaft ist 20 cm lang und somit etwas länger als ich normalerweise stricke. Meine Fersenform ist die nach Priscilla Gibson-Roberts, mit verkürzten Reihen aber garantiert lochfrei und ohne diese unsäglichen zwei Reihen über den gesamten Fuß a la Bumerang-Ferse.
• Robustheit/Material: Mein perfektes Wandersocken-Garn ist Lang Jawoll Sport. Das ist etwas dicker als normale Sockenwolle und wird außerdem als Gebinde mit Verstärkungsgarn geliefert. Das erhöht die Lebensdauer von Ferse und Spitze.
• Farbe: Lang Jawoll Sport bietet eine eingeschränkte Farbpalette, die StrickerInnen gern als “männertauglich” umschreiben. Ist für mich o.k. Sieht ohnehin kein Schwein, da in Stiefeln getragen.

My meditations resulted in the following receipe for the perfect hiking sock:

• The fit: a rather frugal rib pattern (3 k, 1p) is the best for me. It’s comfortable and assures a tight fit. The length of the leg is 20 cm, and this is a bit longer than I usually knit it for regular socks. The best heel for me is the one described by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts with short rows.
• Durabilty/Material: My perfect yarn for hiking socks is Lang Jawoll Sport. It’s slightly thicker than normal sock yarn and comes with a separate thread for heel and toe enforcement.
• Colour: Lang Jawoll Sport doesn’t come in too many colours anyway. The shades could be described as “suitable for men”. This is o.k. for me, I wear them in boots anyway.

Die zweite Hommage an Kaffe Fassett ist soeben fertig geworden: Ein Perlenarmband, das wieder das Muster Persian Poppies interpretiert. Im Gegensatz zu dem Cowl, der ja durch die mehrfarbigen Garne stark changiert, habe ich mich für eine klarere Umsetzung in drei Farben (blaugrün, rot, dunkelrot) entschieden. Das Armband wurde auf einem Perlenwebrahmen gewebt.

The second hommage to Kaffe Fassett is just finished. This time it’s a beaded bracelet for which I used the Persian Poppies-Pattern again. Unlike the cowl which shows a multitude of shades (due to the multicoloured yarns) I decided to restrict myself to three colours (cyan, red, dark red). The bracelet was voven on a beadweaving tool.

Perlenarbeiten sind schwierig zu fotografieren; ich werde es morgen nochmal ohne Blitz probieren.

It’s rather difficult to take a proper picture of beadwork, I’ll try again tomorrow without the flashlight.

Der Verschluss ist aus Sterlingsilber, und den Übergang vom Armband zum Schließmechanismus verziert eine kleine Mohnblüte aus Koralle.

The fastener is made of sterling silver, and between bracelet and fastening system there is a small poppy flower made of coral.

Endlich sind sie fertig, die Feburar-Socken für den Grimm-KAL. Sie haben mich tierisch genervt, und ich bin zu spät, aber es ist geschafft. Nicht mal die Bilder wollten ordentlich werden, aber dafür passen die Socken gut.

They’re done, finally, the February socks for the Grimm-KAL. I really hated to knit them, and therefore I’m too late, but I made it. Even the pictures are not what they’re supposed to be, but they’re fitting well.

Tja, was findet der junge Mann wohl im Kästchen, nachdem er es mit dem goldenen Schlüssel geöffnet hat? Natürlich sein ganz persönliches Stück vom Regenbogen.

Well; what does the young man find inside the box after opening it with the golden key? Of course he finds his very small piece of a rainbow.

Wie auch immer, nun kann ich sie rituell verbrennen tragen, und das Thema ist abgearbeitet. Ich bin sicher, die März-Socken zum Thema der Teufel und der Bauer werden mir mehr Spaß machen. Das Garn liegt schon bereit.

However, now I can burn them ritually wear them. I’m sure knitting the next pair (theme: The Devil and the Peasant) will be much more fun. The yarn is already waiting.

Meine rosa Raupen sind fertig. Sie passen hervorragend und gefallen mir auch, aber obwohl ich bei der zweiten Socke mehrfach neu angesetzt habe, gelang es mir nicht, den Rapport der ersten zu wiederholen, sodass sie nicht gleich geworden sind. Na, was solls, in der Natur ist auch keine Raupe wie die zweite, und die Farben gefallen mir trotzdem.

My pink caterpillar socks are done. The fit me very well and I like  them very much. Although I attached the yarn for the second sock several times, it came out quite different from the firstone, the colour repeat is simply not the same. Never mind, no caterpillar is like another, isn’t it? But I still like the colours very much.

Ich habe eine kleine grüne Kanne, aus der ich immer meinen Frühstückstee trinke. Für die wollte ich einen Teacozy stricken, wurde aber nicht fündig, da sie so klein und außerdem noch abgeflacht ist. Daher habe ich einen entworfen. Bei der Farbe und meinen Teevorlieben (morgens vorzugsweise Irish Breakfast) habe ich mich für ein Aranmuster entschieden, das ich wegen der dauernden Zu- und Abnahmen nicht aus einem meiner Musterbücher nehmen konnte. Dies ist er nun, der Springtime in Ireland Tea Cozy. Gestrickt für eine grüne Kanne mit 0,5 Liter Volumen.

I have a small green teapot which I use for breakfast tea. I wanted to knit a cozy for it but could not find any pattern. It’s just too small and flat. Therefore I designed one. Since the pot is green and my preferred morning tea is Irish Breakfast, I decided to knit an aran pattern. The form of the teapot requires to increase or decrease all the time, and I was not able to find an aran pattern that looked good with it. Therefore I designed one, and the whole thing is called Springtime in Ireland Tea Cozy. Knitted for a small green teapot of 0,5 liter.
