Since there was some interest for the spindle quiver I designed for Turkish Spindles, I decided to write down the pattern. It can be found here for download.

Sabine hat vor einiger Zeit bei mir angefragt, ob ich Lust hätte, mich an einem Gemeinschaftsprojekt für ein (diesmal männliches) Baby zu beteiligen, zu dem sie von diesem Teil inspiriert wurde. Das Material ist völlig anders als das von uns verstrickte; es handelt sich um pflanzengefärbte Merinowolle. Ich fühlte mich geehrt und sagte zu, und hier ist nun mein Patch:

Sunny Landscape

Inspiriert hat mich die norddeutsche Sommerlandschaft, oder auch die Sahara (samt Wadi), wenn man an die momentanen Temperaturen denkt, so genau weiß ich das nicht. Gestrickt wurde rein intuitiv und mit verkürzten Reihen, keine Vorlage, keine Anleitung. Der Patch misst 20 x 20 cm und ist in kraus rechts gestrickt (das war die Vorgabe). Die Stränge wurden mit Tagetesblüten (samt Kelch), Apfelbaumrinde und blauer Stockrose gefärbt.

I was inspired by the northern German landscape in summer, but maybe by the Sahara, who knows, it’s just too hot. I knitted intuitively with short rows, no pattern, no instructions. The patch has 20 x 20 cm and is knitted in garter stitch (this was mandatory). The yarn was dyed with marigold flowers, apple tree bark, and blue hollyhock.

Auch wenn es alles, was es gibt, irgendwie auch in gestrickt gibt, dies ist keine Vuvuzela, sondern ein handgesponnenes und gefilztes Gehäuse für eine türkische Spindel mittlerer Größe.

Everything that dwells on earth exists somehow in a knitted version as well, but this is not a vuvuzela, but a handspun and felted quiver for a medium size Turkish spindle.

Türkische Spindeln sind zerlegbar und einfach zu transportieren, wenn sie leer sind, aber wenn sich bereits Garn darauf befindet, wird es schwieriger. Kleine Exemplare kann man gut in Dosen verstauen, aber bei größeren ist das benötigte Behältnis einfach zu groß. Daher entschloss ich mich, ein praktisches und formschönes (?) Gehäuse zu entwerfen, um meine türkischen Spindeln besser transportieren zu können.

Turkish spindles can be deconstructed and are easy to take with you when they’re empty. But when there is already some yarn on them, it’s more difficult. Small spindles can be stored in boxes quite well, but when they’re too big the container is just too voluminous for being transported in a handbag. Therefore I decided to design a practical and well-shaped (?) quiver for taking my Turkish spindles with me.

Das Modell Pixie stellt den Prototypen dar. Die Wolle habe ich mit der Spindel gesponnen, der handgefärbte Kammzug (schottische Wolle) stammt von lollipop.yarns by filzflash. Zweifach verzwirnt, verstrickt und mit der Hand gefilzt. Das Modell Magic Mushroom ist in Planung.

The design Pixie is a prototype. I spun the roving with a spindle,plied it (2-ply), knitted and felted it by hand. The roving is handdyed (scottish wool) and comes from lollipop.yarn by filzflash.

Dies ist das Gehäuse im geschlossenen Zustand. Die Spindel ist gut geschützt, und der Karabinerhaken sorgt für einen sicheren Verschluss.

This is the quiver when it’s closed. The spindle is well protected, and the snap-hooks locks it firmly.

Nachdem ich ein wenig geübt hatte, habe ich ein Projekt in der tunesischen Häkeltechnik begonnen. Es wird ein Inlet für meinen Strickkorb. Das gibt mir zugleich eine wunderbare und sehr passende Gelegenheit, diese bescheuerte Kauni Rainbow loszuwerden, die ich mir in einem Anfall von ich-weiß-auch-nicht-was gekauft habe

After practicing a bit, I started my first real Tunisian crochet project. This will become an inlet for my knitting basket. It’s an excellent and very conveniant opportunity to get rid of this stupid Kauni rainbow wool I once purchased in  a mood that I call now rather strange. #

Es ist nicht so, dass ich Kauni nicht mag, ganz im Gegenteil. Es ist ein wunderbares Garn mit einem unschlagbaren Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Ich mag auch die Farben der Rainbow, aber ich möchte sie nicht tragen. Die meisten Projekte aus der Sektion “Oberbekleidung” finde ich eher gruselig, da zu gakelig für mich. Außerdem stehen mir zu viele der enthaltenen Schattierungen nicht. Eine kleine, körperfern getragene Decke ist da ideal. Zusammengefasst: Ich mag die Kauni Rainbow theoretisch, aber praktisch … nicht so. Ich wette, ich bin nicht allein, denn viele nutzen diese Farbe für Stuhlkissen und Taschen.

It’s not that I don’t like Kauni, the opposite is the case. It’s a wonderful yarn for an unbeatable price. I even like the colours, but I don’t want to wear them. Most projects I see knitted with this yarn I don’t like at all, there are too many different colours in it. Besides this, too many shades used with Kauni rainbow don’t become me at all. A small blanket not worn close to the body seems to be ideal. To cut a long story short: I like Kauni rainbow more in a theoretical way, but practically … it’s not my cup of tea. And I bet I’m not alone – many knitters seem to use it for pillows or bags.

Tunesisch verhäkelt gefällt sie mir allerdings richtig gut. Es ist ein ideales Projekt für unterwegs, da mindless. Es macht Spaß, sieht gut aus. Gefällt.

Using it for this Tunisian crochet project the colours don’t bother me any more. It’s an ideal project for on the go, because it’s mindless. It’s fun, and I like the way it looks. Love it.

Mein neuestes Werk kommt auf dem Foto recht unspektakulär daher (grau halt …), gefällt mir aber in Natura sehr gut. Der Pullover basiert auf dem Saddle-Shoulder receipe von Elizabeth Zimmermann.

My newest work looks quite unspectacular on the picture (well … grey …), but I like it very much. The sweater is based on the saddle shoulder receipe by Elizabeth Zimmermann.

Dies ist British Knight II/Celtic Warrior, und ich frage mich, was als nächstes kommt? Der Waliser Warlord? Der Surrey-Söldner, der Lincolnshire-Landsknecht?

For this sweater I frogged thisone because I didn’t like it. I’m knitting my own design instead. This is Brithis Knight II aka Celtic Warrior, and I’m asking myself: what comes next? The Welsh Warlord? The Surrey Mercenary Soldier? The Lincolnshire Lansquenet? We’ll see …

Inspiriert wurde ich durch die Frage, wie eine weibliche Waage im Mittelalter wohl ein Kettenhemd gestalten würde. Das Design beruht auf dem Sattelschulter-Pullover von Elizabeth Zimmermann.

I was inspired by the question how a female libra would design a byrnie in the mediaeval times. The design is based on the saddle shoulder sweater by Elizabeth Zimmermann.

Dieses Jahr möchte ich meine WiPs aufarbeiten, und dies ist das erste, das für gut (also fertigstellungswürdig) befunden wurde. Es ist ein Paar Stulpen nach eigener Idee, die ich Matching a Gansey genannt habe.

This year I want to finish or frog my WiPs, and this is the firstone which I think is very well worth to finish. It’s a pair of mitts, designed by myself, and I call them Matching a Gansey.

Gestrickt werden sie aus Shibui Sock in Helix-Technik.

Meine Crazy-Lace-Stola, wie ich sie momentan im Kopf habe, besteht aus drei, fließend ineinander übergehenden Musterabschnitten (ich hoffe zumindest, dass sie das tun werden), und dies ist der erste.

My Crazy Lace stole, as I have it in mind, consists of three parts which will blend harmonically into each other (at least, I hope so), and this is the firstone.

Dies sind zwei Details, links erkennt man die Perlen, die in diesem Abschnitt nur sparsam eingesetzt werden. recht ist der Rand zu erkennen, der eine Art Gestaltungsspielwiese ergibt, wenn ich meine perverse Idee umsetze (und momentan visualisiere ich das Ding nunmal so).

These are two details. On the left you can see a few beads which will be used sparsely in this part of the stole. On the right is a picture of the border which is sort of a playground for the weird idea I have in mind (if I’ll realize this, what I don’t know yet, but at the moment I visualize it this way).

Und wenn ich die Idee realisiere, wird es mit diesem Garn geschehen.

And if I’m going to realize it, it will be with this yarn.
