Dies ist nun der zweite Patch des (langsam) entstehenden Log Cabin Afghan. Distel gab mir, nachdem ich den ersten Patch hier gezeigt hatte, einige wertvolle Tipps zum Thema Patchwork, vor allem, was die Hell-Dunkel-Aufteilung der einzelnen Blöcke angeht. Liebe Distel, Du hast zu 100% recht, was ich als Patchwork-Noob rückhaltlos anerkenne. Die Tipps versuche ich, zu beherzigen, allerdings stellt mich das vor einige Probleme. Ich habe einige Garne, die eindeutig hell bzw. eindeutig dunkel sind, doch sind das eher wenige. Die meisten gehören in die Kategorie “mittel, mit Tendenz zum Hellen, doch vielleicht doch eher dunkel” oder auch in die Abteilung “mittel, mit Tendenz zum Dunklen, doch vielleicht doch eher hell”. Die werde ich irgendwie sinnvoll unterbringen müssen.

This is the second patch of the slowly growing Log Cabin blanket I’m currently knitting. After showing the first patch, I received some very good hints from Distel, regarding using dark and light shades in patchworking. Dear Distel, you are completely right what I have to confess as the patchworking noob I am. And I’m doing my very best to keep them in mind, but there are some problems. I definately have some yarns which are really dark or really bright, but most of them are from the category: “medium, but somewhat dark, but maybe turning out to be more bright” or “medium, but somewhat bright, but maybe turning out to be more dark”. And I’ll have to work with theseones, too.

Jedenfalls habe ich festgestellt, dass meine Strickfreundinnen, die meinten, dass aus missliebige Garne aus der “what-the-fuck”-Abteilung (das Souterrain, Ihr wisst schon …) oder auch “was zum Teufel habe ich da bloß gekauft” gut zu verwursten sind und im Verband zumindest passabel aussehen,selbst wenn man die nicht mal tot als Socke tragen würde.

What I found out is that the knitting friends who told me that yarns I do not like (from the what-the-fuck department, you know what I mean, the stuff you ask yourself why on earth it came to your mind to buy these, since you won’t even wear socks knitted from them if you’re dead) can be used well with others without looking weird.

Ich habe ja vor einiger Zeit begonnen, eine Decke nach dem Log-Cabin-Prinzip zu stricken. Ich plante, von einem quadratischen Zentrum aus die Balken immer länger werden zu lassen. Das vorläufige Ergebnis sagte mir nicht sonderlich zu, und das hatte mehrere Gründe.

• Da die Balken immer breiter werden, brauche ich auch immer mehr Material einer Farbe. Das widerspricht irgendwann dem Prinzip der Resteverwertung, das ich auf dieses Projekt anwenden wollte.
• Es ist schwieriger, komplementäre Farben zu integrieren, die immer nur als große Fläche erscheinen.
• Rosemarie vom Stricktreff brachte eine Log-Cabin-Decke mit, die aus einzelnen Patches gefertigt war, und die gefiel mir viel besser. So kann man auch mal einen Patch unterwegs stricken.

Daher entschloss ich mich, neu anzufangen. Dies ist nun der erste Patch von vielen. Aber er ist fertig und gefällt mir.

Some weeks ago I started a Log Cabin blanket. I wanted to knit it in one piece, starting from the center and making the “logs” longer and longer. I can tell I didn’t like the preliminary result much, and there were some reasons for it:

• Since the logs become longer and longer, I need quite a bit material of the single colours. Because I planned to use up the leftovers from my sock knitting, this doesn’t make sense.
• It’s difficult to place logs knitted in yarn with complimentary shades.
  
• Rosemarie from the Hamburg Knitters brought a log cabin blanket knitted in single patches which I liked much better. And it’s easier to take the material for one patch and knit it “on the road”.

Therefore I decided to start anew, and this is the first patch. It’s done, and I like it a lot.

Ich bin ja durch Mason-Dixon auf die löbliche Idee gekommen, eine Decke zu stricken, und meine Wahl fiel auf das Einfachmodell How to Log Cabin. Die ist insofern toll, als man weder viel denken noch zählen muss. Und man kann seine Sockenwollreste bzw. einen gewissen Überhang im Sockenwollstash verwursten. Ab und zu stricke ich ein wenig daran herum.

The Mason-Dixon Ladies inspired me to knit a blanket, and I decided for the basic pattern, How to Log Cabin. I like it because it looks great, and it’s easy to knit, without too much thinking and no counting. And I can use up the leftovers of my sock production as well as a certain sock-stash backlog. Sometimes I just knit a bit, for relaxing.

Wegen der melierten bzw. selbstmusternden Qualitäten, die ich verarbeite, habe ich mich entschieden, einfarbige, schmale Streifen einzustricken, damit es für das Auge nicht zu unruhig wird.

Since I use a lot of variegated yarn I decided to separate the sections by knitting narrow stripes in solid colouring. This looks better, I think.

Wenn ich mein bisheriges Gestrick so betrachte, stehe ich vor einem Problem: Es sind vor allem Edelreste verarbeitet worden, viel Wollmeise, aber auch eine schöne Zitron Trekking, eine Jitterbug und eine Opal HandArt. Als Stashüberhang würde ich bei mir vor allem die Kaufsünden der frühen Stricktage bezeichnen, gakelige Selbstmusternde, die aussehen, als wäre ein Papagei in einen Farbtopf gefallen. Die passen so gar nicht zu dem Begonnenen, aber wahrscheinlich passen sie zu gar nichts. Naja, wir werden sehen …

Taking a critical look at my knitting so far, I found out I have a problem. I basically used very high-quality leftovers, a lot of Wollmeise, but a very nice Zitron Trekking, a Jitterbug, and an Opal Handart as well. What I call “sock-stash backlog” are mainly mispurchases of very, very colourful sock yarns, self-patterning mainly, which look as if a parrot fell into a paintbox. They won’t work with the yarns I already used, but probably they would work with nothing anyway. Well, we’ll see.

Was macht man mit den Resten von Sockenwolle? Wegwerfen? Zu schade. Verschenken? Hach, einige schon, aber Wollmeise und andere Schätze, die man farblich so mag? Nee. Ich hatte begonnen, einen Schal zu stricken, der mir jedoch nicht gefiel. Also entschloss ich mich gestern, inspiriert durch die vielen wunderschönen, bunten Decken im Mason-Dixon-Buch und durch (die bloglose) Annika, eine Log-Cabin-Decke zu stricken. Dies ist der Anfang. Da ich sehr viele Verlaufsgarne verarbeiten möchte, setze ich die durch einen einfarbigen Streifen voneinander ab, sonst ist das optische Durcheinander zu groß. Es ist natürlich ein Langzeitprojekt.

What to do with all the sockyarn leftovers? Throw them away? That’s a pity. Giving them away? Yeah, some of them, but some are so nice, and I love the colours? No. I once started to knit a garter stitch scarf, but I didn’t like the result so far. After taking a closer look at the Maxon-Dixon book with its wonderful, colourful afghans, I decided to go for a log cabin blanket instead, and this is the beginning of it. Since I have many variegated yarns, I mix with a solid yarn for avoiding a major and disharmonic clutter of colours. Of course this will take quite long to knit.

Noch ein Strang für den Lizard Ridge ist fertig. Es ist wieder Corridale, diesmal in praktisch unfotografierbarem Nachtblau. Ein Anstrickbild kommt in Kürze.

Und wieder ist ein Strang für den Lizard Ridge fertig. Diesmal ist es grünmelierte Corridale. Ich wähle die Farben, die ich für die Decke spinne, spontan aus, aber die Farbigkeit zeichnet sich langsam ab: Es werden dunkle, aber trotzdem leuchtende Töne. Bald kann ich anfangen zu stricken!

Here’s another skein for the Lizard Ridge blanket. This time it’s a dark, semi-solid green corridale. I choose the colours I want to use for this blanket in a rather intuitive way, but it slowly comes out that I will use dark but vivid colours for thisone. I will be able to start knitting soon!

Dies ist keine Granate, sondern eine der Spulen meines Henkys-Spinnrades bei maximaler Auslastung. Gefüllt mit fast 300 g Corridale, verzwirnt, zu verstricken mit Nadelstärke 5. Es gehört zu den Garnen, die ich für meine (noch zu strickende) Lizard Ridge spinne.

This is not a shell but one of the bobbins of my Henkys spinning wheel filled to its maximum capacity. It’s green Corridale, plyed, and to be knitted with 5 mm needles. It’s one of the yarns I will use for the Lizard Ridge blanket which I want to knit.

Etwas Gesponnenes ist auch wieder fertig – ein dickeres Garn aus Corridale-Kammzug in dunklem Violett. Den werde ich für den Lizard Ridge verwenden, für den ich momentan spinne. Ich bin sehr angetan, wie die Farben sich beim Spinnen und Zwirnen vermischt haben.

I’ve something handspun to show again. It’s a thicker yarn I spun from Corridale roving in a dark, rich purple. I’ll use it for the Lizard Ridge (I’m currently spinning for thisone). I am very pleased by the way the colours mixed after spinning and plying.

Dieses sind die ersten Stränge, die für den Lizard Ridge vorgesehen sind. Ich werde Version 2 stricken, also in einem Stück. Da ich es doch etwas übertrieben finde, eine Decke aus Noro zu stricken, habe ich mich entschlossen, die Wolle hierfür selbst zu spinnen (was wieder andere übertrieben finden dürften *g*). Natürlich spinne ich das Garn etwas dicker, was mir nach einiger Übung auch wieder gut gelingt.

These are the first skeins of yarn I want to use for the Lizard Ridge. I’ll knit version No. 2, no patches, just one large piece. I think it’s a bit extreme to use Noro Kureyon for a blanket, so I decided to use handspun (and yet to spin) yarn. Of course this yarn is thicker than the one I usually spin, but it came out well.

Und nun kommt etwas aus der Kategorie “Humoristisches zum Wochenende”. Dies ist mein allererster Versuch, Effektgarn zu spinnen. Schön ist was anderes, aber Spaß hat es gemacht (und den Horizont erweitert). Es ist nur sehr wenig, ca. 15 Gramm, und es ist eine Wochenaufgabe einer Ravelry-Group, in der wöchentlich ein Foto gepostet wird, das einen zu eigenen Kreationen (spinnen, stricken, häkeln…) inspirieren soll. Naja, bald geht es bestimmt aufwärts und die nächsten Resultate werden präsentabler.

And this is from the category “a hearty laugh for the weekend”. It’s my very first attempt to spin some novelty yarn. It doesn’t look good, but it was really fun to spin (and a real mind-opener). It’s just a small amount (15 g), and it was the task of the week of a Ravelry group. There a picture is posted once a week which is used to inspire for some crafty creations (spinning, knitting, crocheting…). Never mind, the next results will be more presentable, I hope.
