In Rekordzeit wurde es fertig, das Tuch Emily Dickinson von Kieran Foley. Und ich bin begeistert. Es ist sehr einfach zu stricken, hat Spaß gemacht, und das Aufziehen der Perlen auf die Maschen war auch nur halb so schlimm wie gedacht.

In a record time I finished the shawl Emily Dickinson by Kieran Foley. And I’m really enthused. It’s really easy to knit, was fun to do so, and bringing the rocailles on the stitches was just half as bad as I thought it would be.

Wer allerdings vor der Perlenfummelei zurückschreckt, wird vermutlich mit einem anderen Design glücklicher werden, denn dieses ist ganz auf die Verwendung von Rocailles zugeschnitten.

If fiddling with more than two hundred rocailles scares you, you’ll probably more happy with a different pattern because thisone is dedicated to the use of seed beads.

Die Perlen sind sehr dezent, man kann sie nur erahnen, aber wenn Licht darauf fällt, glitzern sie verführerisch.

The beads are very unobtrusive, you can hardy guess they’re there, but when a beam of light falls onto them, they sparkle in a very tempting way.

No, not another rabbit, but Dickinson. It’s all about this shawl for these Easter Holidays.

Zunächst dampft man die 545 Maschen innerhalb weniger Reihen zum Zackenrand ein, was eine etwas tolerablere Maschenzahl ergibt, dann folgt ein einfaches Lacemuster, und darauf eine einfache Garter-Stitch-Sektion ohne Tralala, also auch ohne Geperle.

First one diminishes the 545 stitches to a more tolerable number within just a few rows, the result is the spiky border. Then a really simple lace pattern follows for another few rows, and after this there is a section without any hi-ha, no holes, no beading.

Dann geht’s wieder los mit den Miniaturausgaben der Miniaturperlen und der Häkelnadel von 0,5 mm. Die Perlen werden gleichmäßig in der einfach kraus rechts gestrickten Sektion verteilt.

After this the beadwork starts again, with miniatures of miniature beads and a crochet hook of 0,5 mm. The beads are distributed evenly in the simple garter stitch section.

Ich habe festgestellt, dass meine Perlenwahl goldrichtig war; für diesen Hauch von einem Tuch wären normale Rocailles optisch einfach zu plump gewesen. Sie geben nur einen diffusen Glitzer, ohne dass man die Perle im Gestrick selbst lokalisieren könnte. In der extremen Vergrößerung erkennt man sogar eine, die vom Blitz beleuchtet wurde. Sie sind wirklich winzig.

I think my choice of beads was the rightone, for this whiff of a shawl regular rocailles would just have been too large and too clumsy. Theseone give just a shady glitz then and when, but the beads themselves can’t easy be located within the knitting. In this extreme blow-up you can recognize one quite clearly which was hit by the flashlight. They’re really tiny, aren’t they?

Manche Projekte haben etwas Quälerisches an sich. Natürlich ist das zunächst eine Frage der persönlichen Vorliebe, der eine quält sich mit Intarsien (ich zum Beispiel), andere finden das Fair-Isle-Stricken mit zwei Fäden gleichzeitig einfach schrecklich, und wieder andere stricken nicht gern Zöpfe. Es gibt jedoch Projekte, die von den Anforderungen her einfach gruselig sind.

Some projects have something cruel. Of course this is basically a question of personal preferences, one deeply dislikes knitting intarsia (that’s me, for example), others hate stranded knitting, and some don’t like doing cables. But there are projects whose requirements are just horrid.

Das Dreiecktuch Emily Dickinson (Ravelry-Link) ist so eines: benötigt werden hauchdünnes Garn und eine gefühlte Million kleiner Glasperlen.

The triangular shawl Emily Dickinson (Ravelry-Link) is one of these: it requires the thinnest yarn and tons of rocailles.

Leider gehöre ich zu den Leuten, die es sich extra schwermachen: Das Originalgarn ist hier nicht leicht verfügbar, außerdem habe ich mich in einen satten Grauton eines Mohair-Seidengarns verliebt. Daher entschloss ich mich, diese Qualität zu verwenden. Im Perlenladen sah ich leider sehr exklusive Rocailles aus Frankreich, aus einem Laden, den es vermutlich seit den Zeiten von Asterix dem Gallier (oder mindestens Napoléon) gibt. Sie sind ungefähr halb so groß wie die ganz kleinen normalen Rocailles, haben eine unglaubliche Farbe und einen wunderbaren Glanz und können nur mit der allerfeinsten Häkelnadel (0,5 mm) verwendet werden. Muss ich mehr sagen? Ich habe sie natürlich gekauft.

Unfortunately I’m one of these people who like it the hard way. The original yarn is not so easily available here in Germany, besides that I fell for a rich grey shade of a mohair-silk blend. Therefore I decided to use thisone instead. When I entered the bead shop I saw very exclusive rocailles from France. They came from a shop which probably exists since the times of Asterix le Gallois (or at least since the reign of Napoléon). The approximately have half the size of the usual rocailles, have an unbelievable shade of grey and a wonderful lustre. They only can be processed with the smallest crochet hook available (0,5 mm). Do I have to tell more? Of course I had to buy theseones.

Dies ist der Anfang der Stola. Da man mit der breiten Seite beginnt, müssen unerfreuliche 545 (!!!) Maschen angeschlagen werden. Alle 50 Maschen habe ich einen Markierer gesetzt, damit die Zählerei nicht ausartet.

This is the beginning of the stole. Since it starts from the broad side, I had to cast on the unpleasant number of 545 stitches. I decided to place a marker every 50 stitches for not be driven mad by the counting job.

… wächst mein aktuelles Mitnehm-Gestricke, das Tuch Herbivore von Stephen West. Es ist ideal, da es fast mindless und ohne Charts zu stricken, aber nicht langweilig ist. Nachteilig sind allerdings die vielen links-verschränkten Maschen auf der Rückseite.

Wie es sich für einen ordentlichen Pflanzenfresser gehört, stricke ich in Grün.

… my actual knit-a-go-go project, the Herbivore shawl by Stephen West. It’s ideal because it’s almost mindless (not necessary to carry the charts with me) and not boring at all. The disatvantageous thing about it are the tons of “purl through back loop” stitches.

As it should be for a real herbivore I chose a green yarn.

Meine Crazy-Lace-Stola, wie ich sie momentan im Kopf habe, besteht aus drei, fließend ineinander übergehenden Musterabschnitten (ich hoffe zumindest, dass sie das tun werden), und dies ist der erste.

My Crazy Lace stole, as I have it in mind, consists of three parts which will blend harmonically into each other (at least, I hope so), and this is the firstone.

Dies sind zwei Details, links erkennt man die Perlen, die in diesem Abschnitt nur sparsam eingesetzt werden. recht ist der Rand zu erkennen, der eine Art Gestaltungsspielwiese ergibt, wenn ich meine perverse Idee umsetze (und momentan visualisiere ich das Ding nunmal so).

These are two details. On the left you can see a few beads which will be used sparsely in this part of the stole. On the right is a picture of the border which is sort of a playground for the weird idea I have in mind (if I’ll realize this, what I don’t know yet, but at the moment I visualize it this way).

Und wenn ich die Idee realisiere, wird es mit diesem Garn geschehen.

And if I’m going to realize it, it will be with this yarn.

Das mit dem “freien Geist”, der Inspiration und dem freeformenden Lacestricken ist gar nicht so einfach, wenn man Lacestrickerei immer mit dem Abzählen endloser Charts assoziiert (Herr Jinx nennt so etwas übrigens “das dröge Bohren dicker Bretter”). Aber es hilft ja nichts, irgendwie muss man anfangen. Und die Crazy-Lace-Technik ist ja sehr vergebend, sodass man nur den inneren Zensor überwinden muss.

It’s not so easy to let one’s spirit floating freely, getting some inspiration, and starting with the freeform lace knitting when you’re the one who associated lace knitting with endless countings of huge charts. But somehow I have to get started, and the Crazy Lace technique is rather forgiving, and so I just have to overcome my inner censorship.

Ich habe mich entschieden, völlig ohne Charts und völlig wild zu stricken, aber nicht ohne Plan. Das Ergebnis soll von absichtsvoller Zufälligkeit sein, und ich habe natürlich im Kopf, wie das Ganze aussehen soll. Desweiteren habe ich mich entschieden, quasi thematisch zu stricken; inspiriert von dem Song “Purple Rain” von Prince (oder wie immer der sich jetzt gerade nennt).

I decided to knit without any charts and completely wild, but not without a clue. The desired result is supposed to be of intentional randomness, and of course I have a picture in mind how the whole thing will look (once). Furthermore I decided to chose a theme, inspired by the song “Purple Rain” by Prince (or however he calls himself at the moment).

Das bedeutet, dass dies ein relativ dramatisches Stricktück wird, das gewissermaßen den Geist der Achtziger atmet. Es darf also bombastisch, kitschig, übertrieben usw. sein.

This means, of course, that this is going to be a rather dramatic garment, with will breathe the spirit of the eighties. It may very well be bombastic, kitschy, exaggerating.

Das brachte mich natürlich zur Frage der Garnauswahl. Das das Garn lila sein würde, ist klar, aber handgefärbt sollte es schon sein. Wie gut, dass ich einen Strang Lacegarn von lollipop.yarns in meinem bescheidenen Stash habe, das moderat mehrfarbig ist. Dazu habe ich die passenden Perlen ausgesucht (mit einem verführerischen Metallglanz), und außerdem habe ich noch eine ganz perverse Idee für das Finish, aber ob ich das wirklich tun werde, muss ich mir noch überlegen.

This brought me directly to the question which yarn to use. It’s rather logical to use a purple yarn, but it should be handdyed as well (as I felt). Lucky me, I have a skein of lace yarn from lollipop.yarns in my humble stash, which is moderately variegating. I chose matching beads (with a tempting metallic shine), and I have a really weird idea for a finish, but whether it will ever be executed I don’t know yet.

Nein, heute kein Entrelac-Beutel, sondern ein echtes FO: der Boneyard-Shawl. Ein echt wärmendes Stück für kalte Tage.

No, it’s no entrelac bag today, but a real FO: it’s the Boneyard Shawl which really keeps me warm during these cold days.

Es ist das erste echte Dreieckstuch, das ich gestrickt habe.

It’s the first real triangular shawl I’ve ever knitted.

Es ist ein denkbar einfaches Muster, bei dem krause Rippen das einzige Zierelement darstellen. Ich habe mich dafür entschieden, die Zunahmen kompakt zu stricken, d. h. es gibt keine Löcher.

It’s a really simple pattern, and frequent garter ribs are it’s only embellishments. I decided to knit the increases in a way that there are no holes at all, so this shawl has no lacy aspects.

Eine perfekte Ergänzung: Meine silberne Fibel (eine Replik eines Exemplars aus der Wikingerzeit) und dieses Tuch.

A perfect match: My silver fibula (a replica from a finding from the Viking Age) and this shawl.

Die Abschlusskante dieses überwiegend glatt rechts gestrickten Tuchs ist kraus rechts gestrickt (damit sie sich nicht wellt).

The border of this shawl (mostly knitted in stockinette stitch) is knitted in garter stitch for avoiding this stupid coiling-up effect.

Ich habe ja aus Wollmeise den Milkweed-Shawl begonnen und ihn nun zum zweiten Mal aufgetrennt. Ich hatte mich beim ersten Mal böse verstrickt, und auch beim zweiten lief es nicht wie es sollte, und schließlich bin ich darauf gekommen, woran es lag: Es ist das Garn. Im Strang sieht es toll aus, aber verstrickt ist es mir für dieses Teil einfach zu knallig. Also werde ich ein neues Garn für das Projekt bzw. ein neues Projekt für das Garn suchen.

I started the Milkweed Shawl with some Wollmeise yarn, and frogged it the second time now. I made a bad mistake the first time, and the second attempt wasn’t much better. Finally I found out what was wrong: I simply don’t like the colour of the yarn. It’s wonderful in the skein but for this project it’s much too loud. So I’m going to look for a different yarn for the Milkweed and for a new project for the yarn.

Dennoch gebe ich meine Wollmeisen noch nicht aus. Einen Strang habe ich als Geschenk outgesourced (nicht meine Farbe), und angeschlagen habe ich den Ulmus aus den Strängen Miss May und Buxkranzl. Das gefällt mir von den Farben her viel besser. Ich werde die große Version stricken.

But I still don’t give up my attempts to use the Wollmeise yarn. One skein I gave away (not my colour), and I started the Ulmus triangular shawl with the colours Miss May and Buxkranzl. I like this much  more, and I’ll knit the large version.

Die Frage stellte sich vor der Berlinfahrt am Samstag. Eigentlich wollte ich den Gansey mitnehmen, doch da die Wolle sich auf einer 800-Gramm-Kone befindet und das Teil einfach riesig ist, habe ich mich umentschieden. Da ich momentan keine Lust auf Socken habe, wählte ich das Tuch. Doch auch das war tückisch, da meine angefangenen Tücher für ein Unterwegs-Gestrick entweder zu groß oder zu schwierig sind.

This was the question I asked myself before my one-day trip to Berlin. Actually, I wanted to take the gansey with me, but the yarn came on a 800 grams cone, and the garment is huge, so I decided to leave it at home. Since I don’t feel like knitting socks at the moment, I chose to take a shawl with me. But this was not so easy as well because all projects are either to big or too difficult for knitting them on the go.

Daher entschied ich mich, den Milkweed-Shawl anzufangen, der einfach zu stricken ist und auch recht schnell geht. Der gruschtelige Kram oben ist also besagtes Tuch, das schon recht weit gediehen ist. Ich stricke es nicht nur unterwegs, sondern auch abends, denn der dunkelblaue Gansey ist bei elektrischem Licht ungefähr so übersichtlich wie ein schwarzes Gestrick.

Therefore I decided to start with the Milkweed shawl which is fairly easy and quick to knit. The ruffly stuff on the picture above shows it. I don’t knit it on the road only, but also at home, because knitting the dark blue gansey in the shine of a lightbulb is as if I was knitting something black.

Die Idee für eine Streifung in Hell-Dunkel stammt übrigens von Einbeiein (Ravelry-Link), die momentan eine Art Inspirationsmaschine für mich ist.
