This post is of course about fringes and where they were applied to, but tells also how I learned to like the work with very thick needles (or, in this case: hooks).

Bei Ravelry entdeckte ich eine Anleitung für einen superdicken Schal, der tunesisch gehäkelt wird. Ich war sofort begeistert. Nun muss man wissen (und wer hier ab und zu hereinschaut, hat das vermutlich bemerkt), dass ich es nicht liebe, mit dicken Nadeln und dicker Wolle zu arbeiten. Ich finde die Ergebnisse plump und schwer. Für einen Schal braucht mal leicht mal 700 – 800 Gramm, und das ist etwa das Doppelte,was viele meiner selbstgestrickten Pullover wiegen.

At Ravelry’s I found a pattern of a hyper-thick scarf executed in Tunisian crochet technique. It was love at the first sight. Well, you have to know (and if you take a look at this blog from time to time you’ll probably have noticed) that I deeply dislike using superbulky yarn and very thick needles. I think the results look clumsy and, besides this, they turn out to be very heavy. For a scarf you easily use 700 or 800 grams, and that’s approximately double of the weight of the sweaters I knit.

Aber nicht in diesem Fall.

But not in this case.

Zunächst braucht man eine wirklich dicke tunesische Häkelnadel, die in Island in Handarbeit hergestellt wird. Mr. Jumbo, wie sie genannt wird, hat etwa 20 mm, liegt aber erstaunlich gut in der Hand und ist sehr schön verarbeitet.

First of all you need a really thick Tunisian crochet hook which is handcrafted in Iceland. Mr. Jumbo (that’s what it’s called) is about 20 mm but lays really comfortably in your hand, and so it’s a pleasure to work with.

Gehäkelt wird mit Plötulopi (unspun Icelandic), einem Vorgarn. Es lässt sich wesentlich besser verarbeiten, als das bei ähnlichen Produkten aus Nordosteuropa der Fall ist, und die Fasern reißen nicht so schnell. Man arbeitet mit drei Strängen.

For this scarf Ploetulopi (unspun Icelandic), a preyarn, is used. It’s much better to work with than with similar products from Northeastern Europe, because the fiber isn’t torn apart so easily.

Im Original wurde für die Fransen ein dickes Garn in Kontrastfarben verwendet, und das brachte mich auf die Idee, dass ich da eigentlich auch handgesponnenes Artyarn nehmen könnte.

The pattern calls for a bulky yarn in a contrasting colour, and this brought me to the idea to use handspun artyarn instead.

Von da zu der Entscheidung, zwei verschiedene Garne zu verwenden, war es nur noch ein kleiner Schritt. Ich habe Small Corkscrews und Wintergreen in Spring exklusiv für diesen Schal gesponnen.

It took only a small step to use two entirely different types of yarn. I spun Small Corkscrews and Wintergreen in Spring for this scarf exclusively.

Ein Schal und seine Fransen – ihn zu häkeln dauerte nur wenige Stunden.

Der fertige Schal wiegt ohne Fransen übrigens keine 200 Gramm – er ist fluffig, weich (na, so weich, wie isländische Wolle eben sein kann, aber deutlich weicher als die versponnenen Qualitäten) und fällt sehr schön – nix steif, dick, plump und panzerartig.

The weight of this scarf is less than 200 grams – without fringes. It’s lofty, soft (well, as soft as Icelandic wool can be, but much softer than the usual icelandic yarns), and it drapes just beautifully – and it’s not stiff, thick, clumsy or armour-like at all.

Ich bin verliebt. Und ja, ich weiß, dass Frühling ist.

I’m in love. And yes, I know it’s springtime.

Vor Monaten bereits gab es in einer Landlust-Ausgabe Strickpackungen zum bestellen, und dies ist eine davon. Nach gravierenden Lieferengpässen kam das Ding endlich ein, zwei Knäule wunderbaren Kilcarra-Tweeds und die Anleitung. Angeboten war der Schal in Petrol, geliefert wurde eine Blaubeerfarbe, die ich jedoch behielt, weil sie mir gut gefällt.

Months ago the German Landlust magazine offered some knitting kits to order, and this is one of them. After they had been overrun by orders the kit arrived finally: two balls of a wonderful Kilcarra tweed and the instructions. The scarf was offered in teal, but the yarn has a blueberry shade. I decided to keep it since I like it.

Die Anleitung ist denkbar einfach: glatt rechts stricken und zum Schluss Maschen fallen lassen, das ist alles. Hätte ich auch ohne hinbekommen, aber ich wollte das Material testen. Nach dem Stricken filzte ich den Schal in der Waschmaschine an (Schongang), was gut funktionierte und nicht zu viel Länge gekostet hat.

Knitting is really easy: it’s simply stockinette, and at the end you’ll have to drop several stitches, and that’s it. I would have done this easily without any further help or instructions, but I wanted to try the Kilcarra Tweed. After knitting Islightly  felted the scarf in my washing machine. It worked very well, and the scarf didn’t shrink too much.

Schnell und mit Spaß gestrickt: Der Schal/Wrap Urbana von Stephen West. Ich habe mich für die große Variante entschieden, und sie ist RIESIG. Durch die ständigen Ab- und Zunahmen wird das Stricken auch nicht langweilig.

A quick knit with tons of fun: The scarf/wrap Urbana by Stephen West. I decided to go for the large version, and it’s HUGE. Due to the in- and decreases it’s not boring to knit at all.

Eigentlich soll man das Teil umhäkeln, aber das mag ich nicht so gern, daher habe ich mich dafür entschieden, den Wrap mit einem applied I-Cord zu umranden. Es ist kein Spaß, diesen über mehr als vier Meter zu stricken, und man braucht fast einen kompletten Strang Artesano Aran dafür. Aber das Resultat überzeugt mich.

Actually the pattern calls for a crochet border, but since I don’t like this, I decided to try an applied I-cord insted. To be honest, it’s not so much fun to knit more than four meters of this, and it takes almost one skein of Artesano Aran. But I think the result is rather convincing, and so it was worth the efford.

Die allererste Auftragsstrickarbeit meines Lebens ist beendet. Der St.-Pauli-Fanschal für Frau Jekylla ist fertig. Es hat Spaß gemacht, und ich hoffe, der Empfängerin gefällt er.

The first item I ever knitted on request is finished, and the St.-Pauli-Fan-scarf is done. It was fun, and I hope the receptor will like it.

Es ist ein Schal für jemanden, der diskret Farbe zeigen möchte, ohne gleich auszusehen wie vom Wühltisch eingekleidet. Ein Fanschal, den man auch zum Besuch beim Bundespräsidenten tragen kann.

This is a scarf for someone who wants to show the colours of her team in a distictive, discreete way without looking like having it grabbed from a rummage table (that’s how most fan textiles look like). A scarf that can easily be worn while visiting the Federal President of Germany.

Das Garn verstrickt sich sehr angenehm und verleiht dem Schal eine gewisse haptische Opulenz.Außerdem ist es sehr weich.

The yarn is a joy to knit and gives the scarf some haptic opulencs, besides this it’s really soft.

Nu isser auch gespannt, der Milkweed Shawl, und ich bin sehr zufrieden. Das Garn ist einfach perfekt, nicht zu unruhig, aber interessant meliert. Einfach zu stricken war er auch, und selbst das Spannen ist (für meine Verhältnisse) gut geworden.

Now it’s blocked, the Milkweed Shawl, and I love it. The yarn is perfect, the shades are not too vivid, but since it’s a semi-solid, it looks interesting. This is a fairly easy knit, and even the blocking worked very well.

Ich frage mich, ob es einen Zusammenhang zwischen ungeliebtem Garn und den Fehlern gibt, die man beim Stricken macht. Vor einiger Zeit habe ich mit dem Milkweed Shawl begonnen, einem einfachen, kleinen, freundlichen Projekt. Ich wählte ein Wollmeise-Sockenclub-Garn aus, das mir im Strang gut gefiel, und legte los. Obwohl das Ding wirklich einfach zu stricken ist und man sich gut an dem Muster orientieren kann, machte ich Fehler, die ich zu korrigieren versuchte, was gar nicht schön aussah (eine Krankheit der Lacestrickerei), und schließlich gab ich auf.

I’m asking myself whether there is a coherence between mistakes one makes while knitting and yarn one doesn’t like. Some time ago I started the Milkweed Shawl, a simple, small and friendly project. I chose a skein of merino from the Wollmeise Sock Club deliveries and started rather optimistically. Althouth this is really an easy knit where the pattern shows the way, I made several mistakes I tried to correct, and this made things worse. It didn’t look well at all (the lace knitting’s desease), and finally I gave up.

Neben den nur unvollkommen korrigierten Fehlern gab es noch einen anderen Grund: Das Garn gefiel mir nicht, zumindest nicht für dieses Projekt. Die Farbe war zu schreiend, zu laut, zu wenig delikat. Nun habe ich den zweiten Versuch gestartet, diesmal mit einem Strang Blue (Faced Leicester) von lollipop.yarns, und siehe da: Ich stricke das Teil ganz selbstverständlich und völlig fehlerlos (bisher wenigstens).

Besides the imperfectly corrected mistakes there was another reason for abandoning this project: I simply didn’t like the yarn, at least not for this project. The colour was too crude, too superficial, not delicate enough. Now I started the second attempt, and this time I used a skein of Blue (Faced Leicester) from lollipop.yarns. And what happened? I’m knitting this very light-hearted and completely flawless (until now).

… sozusagen jedenfalls. Auch ich stricke den Baktus-Schal, der momentan durch die internationale Strickszene geistert. Wie alle anderen auch, jedenfalls wie fast alle. Ich habe mich für eine Variante in attraktiver Streifigkeit entschieden, gestrickt aus zwei Farben Drops Alpaca.

… sort of. I’m knitting the Baktus scarf which spooks within the international knitting scene. As all the others do, or, at least, so many. I decided for a version with attractive stripes, knitted in two shades of Drops Alpaca.

Aber ich habe dafür auch einen guten Grund: Das Teil ist so schön einfach. Und da ich wohl, wie es aussieht, ab dem kommenden Herbst zukünftige StrickerInnen stricktechnisch beschulen werde, ist so ein simples, aber schickes Demonstrationsobjekt gar nicht schlecht.

But I have a good reason to do so: This pattern is really easy and very suitable for beginners. Since I will – if everything works out – start giving knitting classes for beginners in autumn, such an easy but fancy garment is good for demonstration.
