Da Herr Jinx nicht Autofahren kann, aber sehr kurzfristig nach Brüssel gefahren werden musste, kam ich zu einer sehr kurzfristigen und sehr spontanen Reise in die europäische Hauptstadt.

Because Mr. Jinx has no driving licence but had to visit Brussels for the short term, I got the opportunity to visit Europe’s capital.

Nach einer Nachtfahrt hatten wir zunächst die Gelegenheit, am nordbelgischen Stau teilzunehmen. Nachdem dieser überstanden war und wir auch aus einem sehr verwirrenden Dorf namens Zaventem herausgefunden hatten, lieferte ich Herrn Jinx fristgerecht ab und machte mich auf dem Weg in die Stadt.

After driving half of the night we had the opportunity to participate in the North-Belgian traffic jam. After we managed this and found our way out of a very strange village called Zaventem without getting lost, I brought Mr. Jinx to his destination and took a bus to the city of Brussels.

Belgien im Allgemeinen und Brüssel im Besonderen gehören zu den Orten, von denen ich nur wenig weiß, und ich hatte auch keine Zeit, mich vorzubereiten. Daher konnte ich die Stadt unmittelbar auf mich wirken lassen.

Belgium and Brussels are places I hardly knew anything about, and since I had no time for preparations, I got a very direct impression of the city.

Nach der anstrengenden Fahrt und weil es regnete, entschloss ich mich, zunächst ein kräftigendes Frühstück einzunehmen, und zwar in Form von Räucherlachs, Krabben, Kaviar und Tee. Es war nicht nur köstlich, sondern die Umgebung war auch eine Augenweide: Ein echtes Gründerzeit-Interieur.

Due to the rain and the exhausting night drive, I decided to take a healthy and bracing breakfast first, and I chose smoked  salmon, shrimps, caviar, and tea. It was not only very tasty, but also a feast for the eyes: a real Wilhelminian style interior.

Nach diesem ermutigenden Beginn machte ich mich dann auf, die Altstadt zu erkunden.

After this encouraging start I found my way to the old part of the city to discover it.

Brüssel ist eine Stadt, die bewohnt und in der gelebt wird, kein museal erhaltener Komplex musterhaft restaurierter Gebäude. Der nervige Nachteil ist der Autoverkehr, der auch in vielen der schmalen Gassen stattfindet, die für Autoverkehr überhaupt nicht geeignet sind.

Brussels is a city people live in and not sort of carefully restored museum town. The disadvantage is the traffic that takes place even in the smaller streets which are definately not suitable for cars.

Charakteristisch sind die meist schmalen Häuser, die unterschiedlich gestaltet sind.

Many of the houses are quite narrowly built and individually designed, what is characteristic for the old city of Brussels.

An einigen Stellen haben sich die öffentlichen Brunnen erhalten, die heute natürlich eine reine Zierfunktion haben.

At some places you can still find public fountains which have no function any more except embelleshing the neighbourhood.

Die Altstadt ist natürlich ein Touristenmagnet, was sich in den Geschäften und in der Gastronomie niederschlägt.

The old city is a magnet for tourists, so you find lots of souvenir shops and restaurants there.

Das Herzstück der Altstadt ist der Grand Place mit dem Rathaus und dem Maison du Roi. Hier finden sich Gebäude von Mittelalter bis Klassizismus, und da Belgien nach der Reformationszeit katholisch blieb, haben die Jungs es architektonisch während der Barockzeit so richtig krachen lassen. Das gotische Rathaus mit seinem charakteristischen hohen Turm ist das auffälligste Gebäude hier.

The central place of the old city is the Grand Place where you find the city hall and the Maison du Roi. Here you can see buildings from the medieval times til classicism, and since Belgium remained catholic after reformation, the baroque buildings are exceptionally elaborate. The gothic town hall with its high tower is the most eye-catching building.

Gegenüber dem Rathaus befindet sich das Maison du Roi. Der mittelalterliche Bau wurde mehrfach beschädigt und im 19. Jahrhundert nach Abbildungen im Stil der Gotik restauriert, was erstaunlich gut gelang.

On the opposite side of the town hall the Maison du Roi is located. The medieval building was heavily damaged several times, and finally restored in the 19th century, following historical images. The gothic style was executed extremely well.

Der etwas flamboyante Bau beherbergt heute das Stadtmuseum.

The rather flamboyant buliding hosts the museum of Brussels.

Die Altstadt von Brüssel ist überschaubar und nicht zu groß, und als nächstes besuchte ich die Kathedrale St. Michel et Gudule.

The old city of Brussels is rather small, and so I found my way to the cathedral St. Michel et Gudule.

Der imposante Bau aus hellem Sandstein im Stil der französischen Gotik liegt am Rand der Altstadt.

The impressing cathedral is built of yellow sandstone and follows the style of the French gothic. It’s located on the outskirts of the old city.

Vor der Kathedrale wurden Bäume angepflanzt und Bänke aufgestellt, die zum Verweilen einladen (allerdings nicht an diesem regnerischen Tag).

In front of the cathedral there were trees planted and benches placed which are rather inviting (but not on a rainy day like thisone).

Das Innere ist  vor allem für Gotikfreaks interessant (für alle anderen: Es ist scheiße langweilig). Die dreischiffige Basilika ist durchaus wohlproportioniert, aber die barocken Apostelstatuen stören den Rhythmus der Säulen empfindlich, und die Orgel ist belanglos.  Nicht falsch verstehen, ich kann mich durchaus für die Spannung zwischen historischer Bausubstanz und modernem Orgelbau begeistern, aber nicht, wenn die Orgel mich an eine Schrankwand (Nussbaumfurnier, repräsentativ) erinnert.

The interior might be of some interest for people who are extremely fond of gothic architecture (for the rest of us: it’s fucking boring). The trinaved basilica is well proportioned, but the baroque statues of the twelve apostles disturb the rhythm of the pillars, and the organ is really insignificant. Don’t get me wrong: I can get rather enthused about the tension between historical fabric of a building and a contemporary organ, but not if the latter reminds me of a wall unit (walnut veneer, representative style).

Das gotische Gewölbe / the gothic ceiling

Leider wirkt der Platz um die Kathedrale ansonsten ein wenig verbaut; die modernen Gebäude, die sie flankieren, sind im gleichen Material erbaut, sind jedoch architektonisch nicht wirklich gelungen.

Unfortunately the space around the cathedral appears to be a bit malconstructed; the building at its sides are executed in the same material but in a rather inconvincing way.

Architektonisch geschlossen wirkt hingegen der Place des Martyrs, dessen harmonischer Klassizismus Ruhe ausstrahlt.

The Place des Martyrs is an extreme opposite; the harmonic classicism gives a peaceful impression to the spectator.

Brüssel wirkt überhaupt an manchen Stellen sehr gegensätzlich; was nur manchmal beabsichtigt ist, jedoch einen Teil der Lebendigkeit der Stadt ausmacht.

Brussel is quite often rather antithetic, what sometimes happens on purpose, but not always. But this makes a part of the vivid impression the visitor gets.
