Nachdem ich das neue Sockenbuch von Cat Bordhi nun mal hatte musste ich das dort vorgestellte Prinzip auch ausprobieren (nachdem ich mich heroisch diszipliniert und die Hearts Socks fertiggestellt hatte). Ich halte mich an die Empfehlung, zunächst eine Einfachstsocke (“Discovery Sock”) zu produzieren, um das Prinzip zu verinnerlichen, sozusagen.

After I received Cat Bordhi’s latest sock book, I had to try it (of course), after I finished heroically the Hearts Socks. The author strongly recommends to knit a simple sock in stockinette first (the “Discovery Sock”), just for learning how it works, and so I do.

Es kommt mir entgegen, dass Ms. Bordhi hier dem Toe-up-Prinzip huldigt, das ich ja lieben will. Um es nicht zu einfach zu machen, vergessen wir diesmal den üblichen Maschenanschlag, Judy’s Magic cast-on (das mit dem vielfachen Gewickel um beide Nadeln herum), sondern probieren was Neues. Das ist, wie jeder Anfang nach dem Toe-up-Prinpiz – fummelig, aber recht einfach.

In this book Ms. Bordhi preaches the Toe-up sock, which I want to learn to love. She doesn’t want to make it too easy, and so you can forget about the usual cast-on (called Judy’s Magic cast-on, the one you wind the yarn around the needles for several times) and try something new. It’s – like every method for toe-up cast-on I learned, a bit fiddly, but rather easy.

Der Gimmick hier ist, dass man Socken produziert, die perfekt auf den eigenen Individualfuß passen. Das mag für Leute uninteressant sein, die über einen menschlichen Standardfuß nach DIN-Norm verfügen, den Traum jedes Standardschuhherstellers. Doch für die, zu denen auch ich zähle, die einen so hohen Spann haben, dass sie nur Schnürstiefel tragen können, ist das durchaus ausprobierenswert.

The gimmick is that the result are socks which are knitted to fit perfectly on the anatomy of the foot of the person they’re knitted for. This might be rather uninteresting for people with standard feet (the ones every shoe manufacturer dreams of), but for people like me, with a high instep (so high I only can wear laced boots) this is worth a try.

Wer Bordhis New Pathway for Sock Knitters kennt, fragt sich, ob die Frau es überhaupt in Betracht zieht, normale Socken zu stricken, so auch hier. Man beginnt nicht damit, einfach Maschen anzuschlagen, sondern erst Mal den Umriss des zu bestrickenden Fußes auf ein Stück Papier zu malen, als Schablone sozusagen. Dann wird – je nach Spannhöhe – an der Sohle zugenommen. Es geht – wie immer bei der Autorin – recht esoterisch zu, aber nicht so esoterisch wie bei den New Pathways – bisher (ich bin noch nicht zur Ferse gediehen, die ausschließlich mit rechten Maschen gestrickt werden soll).

If you know Bordhi’s New Pathway for Sock Knitters, you’ll have asked yourself whether this woman ever thought of knitting a normal sock. Here you don’t start with casting on some stitches, but with drawing the outline of the foot the sock is meant to be for on a piece of paper – as a pattern your knitting will follow. When you got started after this procedure you increase several stitches in the sole section, depending on the height of your instep. It’s rather esoteric – as always with Bordhi – but not as esoteric as in the New Pathways – at least until now. I didn’t reach the heel section yet which will be knitted in stockinette exclusively.

Eine Bordhi-Socke ist weniger eine Socke (obwohl, das natürlich auch), als vielmehr ein Abenteuer. So sollte man es auch sehen. Wer also mit einfachen Socken rundum glücklich ist, wird dem Buch vermutlich nicht so viel abgewinnen können, vor allem, weil die Beschreibung relativ langatmig und umständlich ist (mir tränen schon fast die Augen). Aber für die unter uns, die ein stricktechnisches Abenteuer suchen, ist es ein großer Spaß, herauszufinden, wie aus dem, was man da produziert, eine Socke entsteht.

A Bordhi-Sock ist not only a sock but a kind of adventure, and as that it should be seen. If you are perfectly happy with ordinary socks, you probably will ask yourself what the fuzz is all about and you won’t be too happy with this book. To be honest, the instructions are very elaborate (and I mean: VERY!) and rather lenghy (you can call them cumbersome …). But if you’re looking for a knitting adventure, it’s real fun to find out how this sock will be built.
