Ich bin verliebt … / I’m in love

Bisher war ich ja Anhängerin der Kopfspindel, auch wenn ich mich an dem Glaubenskrieg, der um die Vorzüge und Nachteile von Kopf- und Fußspindeln tobt, aus Prinzip nicht beteilige (“Kopfspindeln sind besser!” – “Nein, Fußspindeln!” – “Quatsch!” – “Doch!” – “Gar nicht!” – “Wohl!” – Dasselbe funktioniert übrigens auch mit Stricknadelmaterialien, Spinnradtypen, Fersenformen und Garnqualitäten, aber dies nur am Rande.)

I always prefered top-whorl spindles, although I never participated in the war between fans of top- or bottom-whorl spindles. Spinning with the top-whorl version just was easier for me.

Ich versuchte mein Heil nochmal mit einer Art Fußspindel, immer in der Hoffnung, mal eine zu finden, mit der ich ebenso gut spinnen kann wie mit den Kopfspindeln. Und nun ist es geschehen, mit zwei türkischen Spindeln von Jenkins. Die kleine links ist aus Ebenholz, die größere rechts aus Pink Ivory. Sie sind beide verhältnismäßig schwer (41 g und 57 g), sind ausgesprochen drehfreudig und rotationssymmetrisch. Trotz ihres Gewichts gelingt es mir mühelos, dünne Fäden zu spinnen. Faszinierend finde ich, dass gleich ein richtiges Knäul herauskommt. Nix abwickeln und so. Diese Spindeln sind nämlich zerlegbar und bestehen aus drei Teilen.

But I didn’t give up, and from time to time I decide to give a bottom-whorl spindle a chance. I always hoped to find one as handy as my top-whorl spindles are for me. And now it did happen, since these two Turkish spindles made by Jenkins came to me. They are no lightweights at all (41 and 57 grams), but they turn like hell and their symmetry of rotation is just perfect. Although they are quite heavy I have no problem to spin really thin yarn with them. And the result – yarn that is wound up like a real ball – just fascinates me. These spindles are made to be deconstructed after the spinning process.
