Ich habe ja schon mal den Versuch einer Toe-up-Socke gemacht, auch durchaus erfolgreich (die Mojo-Socken), aber so richtig warm wurde ich mit der Methode nicht. Nun gibt es ein Buch von Wendy D. Johnson, das sich diesem Thema ganz exklusiv widmet: Socks from the Toe up.

Yes, I knitted a toe-up sock once, the Mojo socks, but I never learned to like the method really, although it worked very well. But there is a book by Wendy D. Johnson called Socks from the Toe up which is dedicated to this special technique exclusively.

Das Buch enthält verschiedene Mustersocken (Lace, Gansey, Zöpfe) nebst zwei Basismodellen, die völlig musterfrei die Technik veranschaulichen. Doch es sind weniger die Muster, die das Buch außergewöhnlich machen, sondern eher die Illustrierung und die gründlichen Anleitungen, die es erlauben, praktisch jede Socke in dieser Technik zu arbeiten.

The book contains socks with different patterns (lace, gansey, cables) and two basic patterns in stockinette which show clearly how to knit a sock from the toe up properly. But this is not what makes this book special, it’s the illustrations and the really detailled instructions which allow to adapt almost every pattern for this technique.

Eigentlich sollte jeder, der ein Sockenbuch herausgibt, sich dieses Wunder an Übersichtlichkeit, Layout und Illustration ansehen. Auch wenn die ätherische Dame, die die Socken vorführt, so gar nicht mein Geschmack ist, sind die Fotos der Socken selbst einfach brilliant. Man erkennt jedes Detail der Musterung und der Konstruktion, und man glaubt fast, die Micron-Zahl der Wolle bestimmen zu können.

Actually, everyone who plans to publish a sock book should take a closer look on this one. Regarding the clear arrangement, the layout and the illustrations it’s just brilliant. Personally, the lady modelling the socks is absolutely not my cup of tea, but the pictures of the socks are just a miracle of clearness. One can recognize each and every detail of the patterns and the construction, and one can almost name the micron number of the yarn used.

Der technische Teil ist sehr logisch aufgebaut. So werden jeweils für den Anschlag an der Spitze, die Ferse und das Abketten am Bündchen verschiedene Methoden vorgeschlagen, die frei miteinander kombiniert werden können.

The technical chapters are arranged very logically. The author shows different methods for the cast-on at the toe, for the heel, and for binding of at the cuff section. The methods can, of course, be combined freely.
