Gestern waren wir im Museum und Museumsdorf Haithabu. Ich hatte meine Kamera vergessen, sodass Fotos leider ausfallen müssen.

Yesterday we visited the Museum and the open-air museum Haithabu. Unfortunately I forgot my camera, so there won’t be any pictures. Sorry for that.

Aber im Museumsdorf wurde ich fündig: Dort wurden Knochenspindeln angeboten, und da ich bei Knochen immer ganz aus dem Häuschen gerate, musste eine davon mit.

But at the open-air museum I found something. Someone sold hand spindles made of bone, and since I just love things made of this material, I had to get one.

Der Wirtel ist sehr schön verziert. Dies ist also mein nächster Versuch mit einer Fallspindel. Ich gab diesen Spindeltypus ja zugunsten der Kopfspindel auf, doch hier mache ich eine Ausnahme, denn es ist ein Prachtstück.

The whorl is just beautifully embellished. This is my next attempt to spin with a bottom-whorl spindle. I tried it once, but gave it up and switched to the top-whorl type. But here I had to make an exception, because this spindle is a real gem.

Sie ist etwas schwerer, und musste sie natürlich gleich ausprobieren. Das Spinnverhalten ist etwas rustikaler als bei den modernen Spindeln, die schon eher High-Tech-Produkte sind, aber es funktioniert! ich habe probeweise damit gezwirnt und bin mit dem Ergebnis sehr zufrieden.

It’s quite a heavy weight, ad of course I had to give it a try after I came back. Working with it is a bit more rough than with a modern top-whorl type which is almost a high-tech product. But it worked very well. I plied some yarn I already spun, and I’m very satisfied with the result.
