Oder: Warum ich Lace niemals auf Moosgummimatten fotografieren werde.

Or: Why I’ll never take pictures of lace knittings on these weird soft plastic mats.

Wer hier ab und an mitliest, wird auch mitbekommen haben, dass es nicht immer einfach war mit dem Lace und mir. Umso stolzer war ich, als ich es endlich geschafft habe, mein Lace-Problem zu lösen und das erste Strickstück fertigzustellen, die Hanami-Stola (die grauenhaft gespannt ist, muss ich beizeiten nochmal machen).

The one of you who read my blog sometimes know that I had some problems with knitting lace. I was very proud when I finished my first real lacy garment, the Hanami Stole (which is blocked awfully, I’ll have to do it again).

Bleibt die Frage der Präsentation. Viele fotografieren ihre Tücher oder Stolen auf Moosgummimatten gepinnt, was zweifellos das Muster völlig klar und deutlich herausbringt. Bei manchen Mustern wie z. B. Drachen mit gespannten Flügeln (kein Witz!) oder Stadtpanoramen (auch kein Witz!) ist es in der Tat die einzige Möglichkeit, um das Motiv in seiner Gänze zu präsentieren, in einer Art, wie es nie wieder zu sehen sein wird, wenn das Teil getragen wird.

There is still the question how to present the stole or shawl in photos. Many knitters display them on these soft plastic mats where they are pinned on for the drying process. Of course this shows the pattern in a perfect way, very clear and without tucks and folds. Some patterns seem to require this: dragons with open wings (I’m not kidding), or city scapes (I’m not kidding either). For these patterns this is the only possibility to be recognized as what it shows: a dragon or some skyscrapers. They’ll never ever be seen like this, specially not if these shawls are worn.

Das ist nun meine Sache so gar nicht. Für mich bedeutet Lace in erster Linie Bewegung, Spiel mit Licht, filigrane Strukturen. Dazu passt die löchrige Konstruktion, das hauchfeine Garn, die Leichtigkeit. Ich würde nun nicht so weit gehen, ein Video mit Lace zu machen, aber mir ist es wichtig, Ausschnitte zu zeigen, in denen ein Lacestück ein wenig lebendig wirkt, unter natürlichen Bedingungen, sozusagen.

This is definately not my cup of tea. For me, lace means movement, playing with light, and delicate structures. This corresponds with the holey construction, the very thin yarn, and the lightweightness of the finished garment. I wouldn’t go so far to make a video with lace, but for me it’s important to find a way to show a lace stole (or any piece of lace) unter more natural contitions, like snapshots of movements, to make it live a bit.

Dazu passen nun mal keine Moosgummimatten in Bonbonfarben. Ich nehme in Kauf, dass man nicht jedes Loch, jedes Detail erkennt. Denn ein Muster, das natürlich drapiert nicht wirkt, sondern zu einem halbgegenständlichen, verwirrenden Chaos endet, dass also will, aber nicht kann, das taugt in meinen Augen nicht viel.

So for me lace doesn’t work with plastic mats in candy colours (except for the blocking process). I accept that not every hole, not every detail of the pattern is clearly visible. I think a pattern that doesn’t work when draped naturally is not a good one.
