Wenn man über das modulare Stricken schreibt, kommen immer wieder Fragen, ob man die einzelnen Kleinteile per Hand zusammennähen muss. Nein, muss man nicht. Normalerweise – Horst Schulz und den anderen AutorInnen folgend, nimmt man aus den Rändern der Module Maschen auf und strickt den neuen Patch an bereits fertiggestellte an (sonst könnte mir das modulare Stricken nämlich glatt gestohlen bleiben).

When writing about modular knitting, one of the frequently asked questions is whether all the bazillion of patches have to be sewn together at the end. No, they don’t. Normally, following Horst Schulz and other authors – one picks up the stitches for a patch from the ones previously finished and so the connection is made while knitting (otherwise nothing, and I mean really nothing could bring me to face the challenge of modular knitting).

Bleibt noch die Frage der Fäden. Bei der Weste, die ich gerade stricke, werden pro Patch drei Farben verwendet-  macht sechs Fäden. Das ist eine ganze Menge Faden, wenn man es auf die Weste hochrechnet. Der Gedanke allein kann einen unfroh machen, gäbe es da nicht die Technik des Verwebens. Die sorgt dafür, dass man pro Patch nicht sechs Fäden vernähen muss, sondern nur noch einen. Ich wende dieselbe Technik an wie beim Fair-Isle-Stricken.

But there are still a bazillion loose ends to weave in. For the vest I’m currently knitting three different colours are used for each patch – so you have six loose ends per patch. That’s a lot, if you keep in mind how many patches make a vest. Of course one can easily become a bit depressive thinking of all these loose ends hanging around and looking for a proper place to go. But there is a good method to free oneself from the boring task of getting rid of the loose ends: you just can weave them in while knitting the patch. So there are not six threads but only one to sew at the end. For this I use the same technique as I do for fair-isle knitting.
