Tina hat es in ihrem Blog gerade angedeutet: Es gibt nicht mehr viele Bücher, die einen begeistern. Wer eine gewisse Anzahl Strickbücher sein eigen nennt, kennt einfach schon recht viel und wird feststellen, dass sich in Neuerscheinungen vieles wiederholt, was man schon mal woanders gesehen hat und oft sogar schöner oder besser. Also begeistern einen nicht mehr wirklich viele Bücher.

Tina just mentioned it in her blog (German only): If you’ve seen a certain amount of knitting books, it’s hard to be surprised by new publications. Things, patterns and techniques are repeated over and over, and a lot of them you’ve seen before, and often in a better version. So it’s hard to get enthused by a new knitting book.

Das letzte, was mich zu einem enthusiastischen Anfall beflügelte, war Knit to be Square von Vivian Hoxbro, und auch meine neueste Errungenschaft, Double Knitting – Reversible Two-Color Designs von M’ Lou Baber ist durchaus angetan, mich zu erfreuen. Während Knit to be Square für mich eine runde Sache war, bei der die Technik UND die Modelle mir sehr gefielen, ist das bei Double Knitting ein wenig anders.

The last one I really, really loved was Knit to be Square by Vivian Hoxbro, but my newest book, Double Knitting – Reversible Two-Color Designs by M’ Lou Baber is very well capable to become a favourite. It can’t top Knit to be Square, since there I liked the technique AND the patterns displayed in it, it’s slightly different with Double Knitting.

Zunächst bin ich froh, dass es das Buch gibt. Als ich mir die Doppelstricktechnik beibrachte, musste ich mir die Informationen mühsam aus Büchern und dem Internet zusammenpolken. Mühsam war es insofern, als die die erste Anleitung einfach nur wirr war, die andere einen Anschlag vermittelte, der optisch eine sehr unschöne Kante ergibt und die dritte zwar gut war, aber z. B. nicht auf die Frage von Zu- oder Abnahmen im Muster einging (Doppelstrickstücke sind da sehr sensibel). Diese Lücke wurden nun durch das vorliegende Werk geschlossen, und das ist auch gut so. Es ist der Verdienst von Schoolhouse Press, wo dieses Buch erschien, auch esoterischere Stricktechniken aufzubereiten und zu veröffentlichen.

First of all: I’m happy this book came out. I really am. When I taught myself double knitting, I had to find out that there is no proper, full description of this technique at the internet or in any of the books I own. The first instruction was just confusing, the second taught a cast-on method which looked chaotic, and the third one was o. k. but did not communicate how to decrease/increase stitches in double knitting (and double knitted fabrics are very, very sensitive). This book fills in the blank, and it’s good it does. All credits go to Schoolhouse Press for this, since they still publish books on rather esoteric knitting techniques.

Leider zeichnen sich viele Neuerscheinungen von Schoolhouse Press durch eine gewisse Trutschigkeit der Modelle aus, und dieses Buch ist keine Ausnahme, wenn es auch nicht ganz so arg ist wie bei Meg Swansens “Armenian Knitting” (Elizabeth Zimmermann, wo bist Du?). Es gibt in Double Knitting nur ein Strickstück, das ich nacharbeiten möchte, nämlich einen Mantel mit Art-Deco-Musterung. Der Rest ist zwar nicht furchtbar, aber doch sehr beliebig. Dennoch ist das Buch für mich eine lohnende Investition, denn neben einer ausführlichen Erläuterung der Technik wird auch vermittelt, wie man diese interessante Strickart auf alle möglichen Kleidungsstücke anwendet.

Unfortunately, many of their publications which came out lately, display patterns which look a bit dull and unsophisticated, and this book is no exception (but it’s really not as bad as Meg Swansen’s Armenian Knitting. Elizabeth Zimmermann, where did you go???). There is only one garment in Double Knitting I feel the wish to knit, a coat with a very tempting Art-Deco pattern. The rest of the patterns are not bad, but it’s nothing special. Despite this, the book is worth the money for me in any case. You find very good instructions about the double knitting technique in it, and it teaches how to apply it on garments of any kind.
