Auch 2007 war für mich ein Strickjahr voller Überraschungen, Lernprozesse und Erkenntnisse. Obwohl ich kurz vor Ostern 2006 mit dem Stricken begann und so das zweite Zeitjahr für mich noch nicht ganz zu Ende ist, will ich ein Resumee veröffentlichen, was 2007 mir Neues gebracht hat.

Erfolge

• Ich habe schwierige Schnitte bewältigt und meine Fähigkeiten, Teile zusammenzunähen, verbessert.
• Ich habe neue Techniken bewältigt: Grafting, Double Face, Fair Isle, Steeks (und das Aufschneiden des Strickstückes), RVO, I-Cord, Moebius.
• Ich habe beim Stricken meinen bevorzugten Stil und meine bevorzugten Materialien entdeckt.
• Ich bin tiefer ins Gebiet der Faserverarbeitung eingestiegen und habe Spinnen und Filzen gelernt. Beides verfolge ich weiter.

Misserfolge

• Misserfolg des Jahres: meine Teilnahme an Knitalongs. Das Einschreiben bei einer solchen Aktion ist für mich völlig sinnlos, ebenso könnte ich Nadeln und Garn für das entsprechende Projekt aus dem Fenster werfen.
• Zweiter Misserfolg des Jahres: Knit from your stash. Nie wieder. Mein Stash ist explodiert. Irgendwann, als mein Lebensgefährte fragte, ob das angekommene Paket den achten Joker enthält, sah ich es ein und gab auf. Ich kaufe Wolle, oder ich lasse es, aber ich werde mich auch von solchen Aktionen in Zukunft fernhalten, auch wenn ich sie für sinnvoll halte.
• Wichteln. Richtig Pech hatte ich nie, aber das Gemeckere und das teilweise einsetzende Gezicke nervt. Ich wichtele nicht mehr und bin ein glücklicher Mensch.
• Mit einigen Ergebnissen war ich unzufrieden, oder aber meine Erwartungen an das Strickstück wurden nicht erfüllt. Aber wir leben, um zu lernen, und auch daraus habe ich etwas gelernt.

Erkenntnisse

• Obwohl ich besser nähen kann als letztes Jahr, bevorzuge ich immer mehr das Stricken in Runden bzw. in einem Stück. Wenn zwei Teile zusammengefügt werden müssen, dann lieber durch Zusammenstricken oder Grafting.
• Der/die ErfinderIn der Hörbücher muss StrickerIn sein.
• Knitalongs, Stashreduktions-Zusammenkünfte und Wichteln ist nichts für mich.
• Wenn man eine neue Technik anwenden muss, mit der man keine Erfahrung hat: einfach machen, was das steht. Es funktioniert. Ehrlich.
• Nicht jedes Strickstück, das auf dem Anleitungsfoto gut aussieht, sieht auch fertiggestellt gut aus. Aber ich kann jetzt anhand der Fotos bzw. der Anleitung besser abschätzen, ob ein Schnitt oder Muster bei mir funktioniert.
• Meine bevorzugten Stilrichtungen sind nordisch, ob traditionell oder modern.
• Meine bevorzugten Garne sind glatt, ohne Beimischungen anderer Fasern, ohne Superwashausrüstung, ohne Tralala. Sie sind natürlich, also Wolle, Alpaka, Baumwolle, Seide.

Vorsätze für 2008

• experimentierfreudig bleiben
• mehr aus meinem Stash verstricken (es sind so herrliche Garne darin!)
• endlich mal ein großes Fair-Isle-Projekt angehen
• meine zahlreichen WIPs abbauen

2007 was again a knitting year full of surprises, learning processes, and insights. Although I started knitting just in Easter 2007 (and the second year of knitting is not finished yet), I want to share the experiences I made in 2007

Positive Results

• I managed to knit even very sophisticated garment constructions and improved my abilities to sew the parts together
• I learned new techniques: grafting, double knitting, fair-isle, steeks (incl. cutting), RVO, I-Cord, moebius
• I found out what my preferred style is and which materials I like best
• I got deeper into fiber processing and learned spinning and felting/fulling, what I like both very much

Failures

• failure of the year: knitalongs. It makes absolutely no sense for me to join, I could rather throw needles and yarn out of the window (joining is like stopping to knit the item the knitalong is for)
  
• second failure of the year: Knit from your stash. My stash just exploded, and I just gave up when my partner asked whether the newly arrived parcel contained the eigth wild card (in fact, it was the tenth or so…). I’m buying yarn or I don’t but I will stay away from things like “don’t buy any yarn”, even if they made sense for me. It just doesn’t work.
• Swaps. I never had bad luck with my swap partners or the items I received, but the nagging and bickering just gets on my nerves. I don’t participate in swaps, and this makes me happier.
• I was not satisfied with all of the things I knitted, or my expectations were not fulfilled. Sometimes this had to do with the material, sometimes with the cut. But we’re here for learning, and I learned something from it.
  

Conclusions

• Although sewing got better, I just prefer knitting in rounds or in one piece. If two pieces have to be joined, I prefer to graft or to do the three-needle bindoff.
• The person who invented audiobooks has to be a knitter.
• Knitalongs, stash-reduction initiatives or swaps are not for me
  
• If you have to apply a new knitting technique you never did before: just do it. Follow the instructions step by step. It works. Really.
  
• Not each and every garment which looks good on a photo will look equally good after it’s knitted in real life. But I learned to pre-estimate whether a cut or a pattern will work.
• my preferred style is nordic, traditional and modern
• the yarns I prefer are plain, without blendings with other fibres, without superwash, without chi-chi. They are rather natural: wool, alpaca, silk, coton (but wool I like best)

Intentions for 2008

• staying adventurous and going on to try new things out
• knitting more with yarns from my stash (there are really phantastic yarns)
• starting one or two big fair-isle projects
• finishing my current WIPs
