Ich konnte es natürlich nicht erwarten, meine erste Pulloverwolle, graues Gotlandschaf, anzustricken, obwohl ich vor lauter WIPs schon gar nicht mehr weiß, wo mir der Kopf steht. Dies ist das Bündchen des Irish Beach Sweaters von Alice Starmore, ein etwas eigenwilliges Zopfmuster. Die Wolle strickt sich toll, das Strukturmuster wirkt etwas diffus, was mich aber nicht stört, da das Original im Bild recht unruhig wirkt. Allerdings merke ich, dass Nadelstärke 5 für mich das Maximum ist, was ich als komfortabel empfinde. Unvorstellbar, dass ich mal mit Nadelstärke 8 gestrickt habe…

Of course I could not wait to knit with my first handspun yarn, intended for the Irish Beach Sweater by Alice Starmore. I have a countless number of WIPs, but I simply had to do this. This is the cuff which shows a pattern rather opinionated, and the yarn is very comfortable and smooth to knit with. The pattern looks a bit diffuse, but I like it this way since the cables are rather agitated. The cuff is knitted with 5 mm needles, and I feel this is the maximum needle strengh I feel comfortable with. I can’t believe I knitted sweaters with 8 mm needles once…

Mit diesem Pullover geht es mir ähnlich wie den Mystery-Stole-Teilnehmerinnen: die warten auf das Muster, dafür warte ich auf die Wolle. Ich spinne täglich daran, aber ich verstricke auch das Garn, das fertig geworden ist. Die Prozedur der Garnherstellung ist auch nicht wirklich schnell:

1. spinnen – zwei Spulen voll (und die Spulen meines Henkys sind groß)
2. ruhen lassen – mindestens einen Tag nach der letzten gesponnenen Partie
3. zwirnen
4. ruhen lassen – für einen Tag bin ich meist zu ungeduldig
5. zum Strang wickeln, mittels der praktischen Niddy Noddy
6. waschen – mit wenig Olivenölseife in sehr warmen Wasser für ein paar Stunden einweichen
7. trocknen lassen – dauert meist zwei Tage
8. zum Knäul wickeln

It’s a bit like the mystery stole thing: The participants wait for the next clue, but I have to wait for more yarn to be spun. Currently I’m spinning a certain amount of it every day, and I knit the finished yarn immediately. But producing yarn is not a very fast process:

1. spinning – two bobbins, and my Henky’s wheel’s bobbins are quite large
2. giving the singles a rest of at least a day for letting the twist set a bit
3. plying
4. giving the plied yarn a rest again – but for a whole day I’m too impatient at the moment
5. skeining with the very practical niddy noddy tool
6. soaking it in very warm water with a bit of olive soap for a few hours
7. drying (takes appr. two days)
8. winding it to a ball

Meine Freizeit teile ich zwischen Spinnen, Stricken, Bass spielen und Harry Potter lesen auf. Obwohl das Spinnen auch viel Zeit kostet, bin ich froh, dass ich es gelernt habe, und ich möchte darauf nicht mehr verzichten.

Currently I have to divide my free time between spinning, knitting, playing bass, and reading the last volume of Harry Potter. Although spinning takes it’s time I’m glad I learned it, and I don’t want to do without any more.
