Am Wochenende war wieder die nächste Umräumwelle angesagt (*ächz*), aber Stricken und Spinnen kamen auch zum Zuge. Der Japanische Rippenpullover von Isager wächst langsam aber stetig, und am Spinnrad entstanden zwei Stränge aus (nicht von mir) handgefärbter Schottlandwolle: Absinth – das Grüne – und Autumn Leaves. Und beide haben mir gezeigt, wo es bei mir langgeht, spinntechnisch gesehen.

During the last weekend we continued to rearrange our flat, but I found some time to do some knitting and spinning as well. The Japanese Rib Sweater by Isager grows slowly but steadily, and I finished two skeins of handdyed Scottish wool. I named the skeins Absinth and Autumn Leaves. While working on these I found out how I will go on with spinning.

Wir haben in unserer Wohnung keinen Platz zum Färben und Trocknen – mal abgesehen vom Geruchsproblem. Was so als “handgefärbt” verkauft wird, beweist oft genug, dass Färben eine Kunst für sich ist, die nur wenige beherrschen (hiermit beziehe ich mich ausdrücklich auf Garne, die für den Verkauf bestimmt sind, nicht auf Färbeexperimente, die Teil eines Lernprozesses sind). Und ich bin der Meinung, dass für mich das Spinnen eine Fertigkeit ist, die ich als Anfängerin erst mal ausloten sollte. Bei dem Herbstfarben-Strang habe ich jedoch trotzdem mit Farben experimentiert, indem ich die einzelnen Segmente trennte und nach meinen Vorstellungen am Rad neu mischte und zusammensetzte. Ich fand das sehr faszinierend und weiß jetzt, wie ich die für mich wichtige Arbeit mit Farben ins Spinnen integrieren kann: mittels Kardieren nämlich.

In our flat there is no space for dyeing experiments, neither for drying larger amounts of yarn (not to speak of the smell…). When I see what people sell as “handdyed” yarn, I clearly understand that dyeing is a craft which is really mastered just by a few people (I don’t mean hobby dyers whose colour experiments are a necessary part of their learning process). And I think that spinning is a craft which I should learn thoroughly, and not only a little bit as I do as a beginner. Spinning the autumn yarn I nevertheless was able to do some colour experiments. I separated the different colours of the roving and put them together anew at the spinning wheel. This was really fascinating, and now I know how to integrate the work with different colours (which is important for me) at the spinning wheel: I will start carding.
