Ich habe ein Paar Broadripple Socken fertiggestellt… und ich bin sehr unzufrieden. Das Problem ist nicht die Farbe, wie viele vielleicht denken mögen. So sorgfältig ich die Farben für meine Oberbekleidung aussuche, so liberal bin ich in der Sockenfrage. Auch ist das Muster wunderschön, es strickt sich leicht und schnell. Das Problem ist das Garn.  Es ist eine handgefärbte Sockenwolle in der durchaus handelsüblichen Mischung von 75% Wolle und 25% Polyamid. Diese Mischung verstricke ich oft und gerne von den unterschiedlichsten Herstellern. Diesem Garn jedoch fehlt jede Spannung und jedes Leben. Es fühlt sich eher an wie ein Spülllappen, völlig tot und nicht sehr angenehm – kein Vergleich mit anderen Sockengarnen, auch denen günstiger Anbieter. Darunter leidet natürlich auch die fertige Socke. Ich weiß nicht, woran das liegt, ob das Grundmaterial minderwertig war, zu viel Farbe oder Fixierung verwendet wurde oder ob es ein Problem im Prozeß gab. Ich weiß nur, dass dies mit Abstand die schlechteste Sockenwolle ist, die ich je verstrickt habe. Und dafür war das Produkt dann doch zu teuer.

I finished a pair of Broadripples … and I am very dissatisfied. The problem is not the colour, as many may think. I usually select the colours for my sweaters, tops etc. very carefully, but regarding socks I am much more liberal. I love the pattern, it’s just handsome, easy and fast to knit. It’s the yarn I’m dissatisfied with. It’s handdyed, an usual blended sock yarn, 75% wool, 25% Polyamid – a blend I often use and which I like very much for socks. But this yarn is completely “lifeless”. There is no tension, no memory, it feels like “dead”, and so are the socks: they are flabby, remind me of a dishcloth, and this does no good to the pattern at all. I don’t know what the problem is, whether it’s a low-grade material, whether there was too much colour or fixation was used or there was a problem within the dyeing process, but this is definately the worst sock yarn I ever used by far. And the yarn was really expensive.
