Heute habe ich es das erste Mal in meinem Leben gewagt, in ein Strickstück zu schneiden. Ich hatte mich ja in das Modell More Stripes verguckt und enthusiastisch damit begonnen. Da ich Anleitungen nie vorher lese, entdeckte ich bald, dass hier mit Steeks und Schneiden gearbeitet wird. Nun plane ich ja einen Fair-Isle-Pullover, so dass dieses Teil in jedem Fall eine gute Übung sein sollte. Heute war es dann soweit: Mit Stricken bin ich – mit Ausnahme der Blenden – fertig und zwischen der Fertigstellung und mir stand eben die Schere. Also griff ich zur DVD A Knitting Glossary von Elizabeth Zimmermann, verinnerlichte die Lektion zum Thema Steeks und legte los. Links sieht man den Steek nach der Befestigung.

Today I cut into a knitted fabric for the very first time in my life. Browsing through the current issue of knitty.com I immediately fell for the pattern More Stripes and started enthusiastically with it. Then I found out that the neckline had to be cut. Since I want to try a Fair Isle Sweater (and then I will have to cut it anyway), I decided this would be a good opportunity to get a little practice. Today was the moment: I am almost done with the knitting job (except the neck- and armhole bands) and between me and the Finishing of this item stood just a pair of scissors… So I grabbed the “Knitting Glossary” DVD by Elizabeth Zimmermann, watched the steeks’ chapter and started. The first picture showes the steek after the crocheting job.

Dann ging es ans Schneiden. Ich zögerte nicht lange und griff beherzt zur Schere. Das Resultat sieht man auf dem zweiten Foto. Was soll ich sagen? ES HÄLT! ES HÄLT! ES HÄLT!

Then the cutting job had to be done. I did not hesitate, grabbed my pair of scissors and just did it. The result can be seen on the next picture. What can I tell? IT WORKED!

Nach den letzten Befestigungsarbeiten bin ich sehr zufrieden: es sieht sehr gut und sauber aus, es hält, es funktioniert und ist bereit für die Abschlussarbeiten. Ich habe eine ganze Menge gelernt.:

• es ist möglich, in ein Strickstück zu schneiden, ohne dass es sich auflöst
• das ist sogar sehr einfach, wenn man sich an die Anleitungen hält
• Wenn man sich ans Schneiden macht, ist definitiv der falsche Moment, zuviel zu denken. Am besten man denkt überhaupt nicht und tut es einfach.

After the final sewing job the neckline looks just great and fit for finishing it by adding the band. I have learned a big deal by doing this:

• it is possible to cut a knitted garment without damaging it
  
• it is pretty easy if one follows the directions given properly
• it is definately NOT the time for reflection or self-reflection when doing the cutting job. The best thing one can do is not to think at all – just do it.
