Aus anderen Blogs wie aus Erzählungen weiß ich, dass Selbstgestricktes beim Mann nicht immer gut ankommt – zu kratzig, zu handgearbeitet, zu bunt, zu irgendwas. Bei uns ist das anders, denn mein Lebensgefährte nimmt meine für ihn gestrickten Sachen mit Begeisterung entgegen und trägt sie sogar. Und nicht nur das, er erzählt auch jedem, dass ich das für ihn gestrickt hätte. Meine Begeisterung für seine Begeisterung wird nur dadurch etwas gedämpft, dass er über zwei Meter groß ist und Schuhgröße 47 hat.

Reading other blogs and talking to fellow knitters taught me that handknitted items are not always heartily welcomed by the male recipient -too scratchy, too handcrafted, too colourful, too something else. My companion is different: he accepts the things I knit for him enthusiastically and even wears them as often as possible. And this is not all: he even tells each and everyone that I knitted this for him. My enthusiasm about his enthusiasm is only diminished slightly by the fact that he’s more than two meters high and his size of shoe is 47…

Nun ja, ich hatte mich entschlossen, ihm mal wieder ein Paar Socken zu stricken. Nun ist seine Farbskala recht eingeschränkt: Schwarz, Grau, etwas Dunkelblau (es darf aber auch Schwarz oder Grau oder vielleicht etwas Dunkelblau sein). Da das Stricken schwarzer Socken in Größe 47 eigentlich unter die Genfer Konvention fallen sollte, habe ich mich geistig und psychologisch darauf vorbereitet. Als ich ihm also vorschlug, ein Paar schwarzer Socken für ihn zu stricken, meinter er nur: “Nee, nicht schwarz. Ich hätte lieber ein paar kurzer Haussocken in bunt”. Nun ist mein Stash eher feminin und die Auswahl männertauglicher Sockengarne ist sehr begrenzt. Aber ich fand ein schönes dunkles Petrol, das auch ihm gefiel. Nun stricke ich also bunte Kurzzocken in Größe 47. Das Muster stammt aus dem Buch Knitting Vintage Socks von Nancy Bush und hat den Namen Gentleman’s Fancy Sock.

Well, I had the idea to knit a pair of socks him. Since he wears only grey, black, and sometimes dark blue, the possibilities were rather limited. The Pattern is Gentleman’s Fancy Sock from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush.

Socken wasche ich in der Waschmaschine im Wollwaschgang mit Waschnüssen. Das funktioniert prima.
Andere Sachen wasche ich mit der Hand, da ich kaum Wolle mit Superwash-Ausrüstung verstricke (Ausnahme: Socken). Ich verwende ein Wollwaschmittel ohne Weichspüler. Alle Sachen werden liegend getrocknet, damit sie nicht ausleiern.

Aus dem Buch Folk Socks von Nancy Bush habe ich die Welsh Country Stockings gestrickt. Meine Wolle war etwas dicker, und auch Ferse und Spitze habe ich anders gestrickt als angegeben (nämlich nach dem Prinzip von Priscilla A. Gibson-Roberts). Außerdem habe ich den Schaft etwas verkürzt. Ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis, und es hat viel Spaß gemacht, sie zu stricken, trotz der langen einfarbigen Passagen. Da die Farben so gut passen, gehören auch diese Socken zum Project Spectrum.

I just finished my first project from the book Folk Socks by Nancy Bush: The Welsh Country Stockings. The yarn I used was a bit thicker, I shortened the leg a bit, and used the instruction by Priscilla A. Gibson-Roberts for heel and toe section. I am very satisfied with the result. They were fun to knit, dispite of the large monochrome parts. Due to the colours these socks belong to Project Spectrum.

Gestern war ich fremdstricken, in Flensburg. Ein paar Hamburger Strickerinnen haben sich zusammengetan und sind hingefahren, um im Wollsucht-Shop ihren Leidenschaften zu frönen. Dies war meine Gelegenheit, die Erneuerung meines Sockenwollstashs abzuschließen. Ich habe einige Knäule Zitron Trekking XXL erworben, ein Garn, dessen Farbigkeit mich immer wieder begeistert. Dabei fielen auch noch zwei Stränge von “Handgefärbt” ab.

Yesterday some of the Hamburg knitters went to Flensburg for knitting with some people from there. We met in the Wollsucht Shop. This was the opportunity for me to finish the renewal of my sock yarn stash. I bought some balls of Zitron Trekking XXL, a yarn I like very much because of its noble, distinguished colouring. Besides that, I found two skeins of “Handgefaerbt” which I bought as well.

Leider war das nicht alles. Ich schwöre, ich bin unschuldig. Sie hat mich überfallen, und ich war völlig wehrlos. Diese Farben hatte ich schon lange gesucht, aber so nie gefunden. Und da waren sie, und dazu noch getarnt als eines meiner absoluten Lieblingsgarne: Drops Alpaca. Ich sah den Pullover schon vor mir und habe es mitgenommen.

Unfortunately this was not the end of my purchases. But I swear I’m innocent. It somehow hijacked my mind, and I was completely defenceless. I was looking for these colours exactly for a long time already, and in this shop I found them, disguised as one of my favourite yarns: Drops Alpaca. I could see the sweater I wanted to knit from it before my inner eye. What can I say – I bought it (of course).

Zu guter Letzt habe ich dort sogar ein Nadelspiel aus Veilchenholz gefunden. Das wollte ich schon immer ausprobieren. Es wurde schlagartig mein absolutes Lieblingsset, da es sich unglaublich samtig anfühlt. Außerdem habe ich ein Sockenbrett abgestaubt, als Gegengabe für Sockenwolle. Darüber habe ich mich wahnsinnig gefreut, denn ich war schon länger auf der Suche. Ich muss es nur noch abschleifen, dann kann ich meine fertigen Socken angemessen präsentieren.

Last but not least I bought a set of dpns made of violet wood. I ever wanted to try these, and it became my absolute favourite immediately. It feels smooth, fair, and sort of velvety. Furthermore I received a sock tray from a very nice person, as a gift in return for a ball of sock yarn. I was very happy about this since I looked for one for quite a long time already. I just have to polish it, but then I will be able to show my knitted socks in an appropriate way.

Mir fehlte es an vernünftiger Sockenwolle, daher habe ich beschlossen, meine zweite Wild Card der Knit from your Stash-Aktion für einen Berg davon zu verbraten. Dies ist der erste Teil: Lang Jawoll in den oben gezeigten Farben, jeweils ausreichend für ca. 1,5 Sockenpaare.

There was a dramatic lack of nice sock yarn in my stash, therefore I decided to spend my second wild card (knit from your stash) for a mountan of this. This is the first part: Lang Jawoll in the colours shown above, enough for appr. 1,5 pairs of socks of each colour.

ICH HABE GESÜNDIGT II! / I’M A SINNER II!

Sündigen macht nur Spaß, wenn man es richtig macht. Jetzt loszugehen und zwei Knäule Acrylgarn zu kaufen, wäre keine Sünde, sondern eine Dummheit. Daher habe ich die Sanierung meines Sockenwollbestandes mit Hilfe der Wollmeise vorgenommen. Dies kam heute an: je ein Strang Veilchen, Wilder Mohn, Suzanne, Gewitterhimmel, Birkenrinde und Vergißmeinnicht. Die Aufnahme wird den Farben natürlich nicht gerecht, so ist der linke Strang violett und alles überhaupt viel leuchtender.

Sinning is just fun if one does it right. To buy two balls of acrylic is not sinning but stupid. Therefore I decided to let Wollmeise assist when I restructure my sock yarn stash. This arrived today: one skein of each colour: Violet, Wild Poppy, Suzanne, Thunderstorm, Birch Bark and Forget-me-not (the German names are translated, of course). The photo does no justice to the colours at all, the skein at the very right is violet and all of them are much more vibrant.

ICH HABE GESÜNDIGT III (OH JA!) / I’M A SINNER III (OH YES!)

Nicht heute, aber am Samstag: Da kommt die endgültige Sockenwoll-Stashsanierung mittels der Abholung einiger Knäule Zitron Trekking XXL.

Not today, but next Saturday: I will pick up some balls of Zitron Trekking XXL, and this will complete the renewal of my desastrous sock yarn stash.

Ich habe mich heute mal aufgerafft und einen eindeutigen Fehlkauf zur Online-Auktion freigegeben. Ich werde dieses Garn nie wieder anfassen, geschweige denn verstricken, und ich kann mir heute überhaupt nicht mehr erklären, wieso um aller Welt ich DAS mal gekauft habe. Auch eine Art der Stashreduktion. Ich glaube, das ist wirklich das schlimmste Garn, das ich je gekauft habe – und dazu noch in so einer Menge! Arlene, Du darfst jetzt lachen. Und alle anderen dürfen das natürlich auch.

Today I pulled myself together and offered a real yarn mispurchase for online auction. I will never, never touch this yarn again (let alone knit with it) and I have not the slightest idea why I ever bought THIS. Never mind, this will reduce my stash as well. I think this is the most useless yarn for me I ever purchased, and it’s quite a lot!

Es wäre mal wieder Zeit, meine WIPs zu begutachten, ob es wirklich noch alles WIPs sind, oder schon UFOs, wie es mit der baldigen Fertigstellung aussieht, etc.

From time to time I take a closer look on my WIPs, whether they can still be called WIPs or whether they mutated to UFOs in the meantime, and when at least some of them will be finished.

Da wäre zunächst der graue Alpakapullover. Der macht sich gut, geht schnell voran und wird – hoffentlich – nächste Woche fertig. Keine Nähte, einfach “knit and go”. Alles bestens also.

First of all there is the grey alpaca sweater, knitted in the style of a guernsey. I hope I will finish it next week. No problems, no sewing, just “knit and go”. Everything is just fine.

Dann wären da die Mameluke Socks. Sie sind mein Trainingsobjekt für Fair-Isle, was immer besser läuft. Ich komme schneller voran als gedacht, die Fadenspannung wird auch besser. Die Ferse war hart. Eigentlich ist es eine einfache Ferse mit verkürzten Reihen, wie sie auch bei Elizabeth Zimmermann vorkommt. Nur Fair-Isle auf links stricken war ich nicht gewöhnt. Aber ich habe es geschafft. Alles bestens.

Knitting the Mameluke Socks is supposed to get me some practice for Fair-Isle. And it definately does. I can deal with the yarn tension better now, and I knit it rather quickly. But the heel gave me a real hard time. Actually it’s a rather simple short-rows-heel as it’s found in Elizabeth Zimmermann’s books. I already did it, no problem. But I never did it with two alternating colours, and purling in fair-isle was not that easy. But I managed, and everything is fine.

Die Welsh Country Stockings aus dem Buch Folk Socks von Nancy Bush habe ich gestern begonnen, als ich feststellte, dass ich kein kleines, einfaches Projekt zum Mitnehmen hatte. Sie werden mein neues Projekt für Unterwegs, sind einfach zu stricken, machen Spaß, gehen schnell… was will man mehr?

Yesterday I started with the Welsh Country Stockings from the book Folk Socks by Nancy Bush because I had nothing mindless and small to take with me (and yesterday the Hamburg Knitters met again). They are fairly easy, it’s fun to knit them, and they can be done pretty quickly. It’s my new project for “on the road”.

So, und jetzt wird es ein bisschen komisch…

Now it’s getting a bit weird…

• Lettische Handschuhe (Kurzeme Alsunga): Ich bin dran. Ehrlich. Sie waren mir zu eng, ich musste etwas auftrennen. Aber sie gehören zur Zweimonatsaufgabe des Project Spectrum.
• Grass Basket Cropped Ruana Shawl: Der ist für meine Mutter, und sie weiß es. Es ist genügend sozialer Druck da, ich werde ihn bald fertigstricken müssen.
• Victorian Lace Shaw: An dem nadele ich von Zeit zu Zeit ein bisschen herum. Ist aber o.k., der läuft nebenbei und kommt demnächst wieder dran … wenn ich mit dem Grass Basket fertig bin.
• Zara (Rowan Big Wool): Ich muss ihn nur noch zusammennähen und den Ausschnitt stricken. Eigentlich keine große Sache, aber ich HASSE es, mit sehr dicken Nadeln zu stricken. Bleibt noch liegen.
• Raspy: kommt nach dem Alapakapullover dran, ist ein Sommerstück. Mache ich gerne, muss ich unbedingt haben, sehe ich nicht als Problemfall.
• Donegal Fair Isle: Strenggenommen kein WIP, da noch nicht begonnen. Ich übe erst mal die Technik an kleineren Stücken.
• Graues Wintertop: Wir hatten keinen Winter, außerdem ist er bald vorbei. Und er wird aus Rowan Big Wool gestrickt. Ich HASSE es, mit dicken Nadeln zu stricken. Ein UFO.
• Skeleton Scarf: Den mache ich auf alle Fälle fertig, es kam mir nur der Grass Basket für meine Mutter dazwischen. Ich glaube, ich lasse ihn bis zum Herbst liegen, denn er ist recht warm (Alpaka).

• Latvian Mittens (Kurzeme Alsunga): I’m working on it. Really. But I had to rib the upper part because it was too narrow. They are part of Project Spectrum.
• Grass Basket Cropped Ruana Shawl: It’s for my mother and she KNOWS about it. Therefore the is a sufficient amount of social presure behind it. I will finish thisone soon.
• Victorian Lace Shawl: A side project I’m working on from time to time. I like it, but the Grass Basket comes first. When this will be done, there will be more time for the Victorian again.
  
• Zara (Rowan Big Wool Sweater): It’s almost done, just sewing and the neckline have to be knitted. But I really hate knitting with very thick needles.
• Raspy: A cotton sweater for spring and summer. I like it, I like to knit it, but other things were more important. I will get back to it after finishing the alpaca sweater.
• Donegal: My high-flying fair-isle project. No WIP actually, because I did not even start with it. I decided to get a bit more practice before.
  
• Grey Winter Top: Knitted of Rowan Big Wool as well. But I just HATE knitting with very thick needles. Thisone is an UFO.
  
• Skeleton Scarf: I started the Grass Basket for my mother, therefore I put thisone aside. I like it, but it’s for winter definately and I think I will get back to it in autumn.

Ehrlich gesagt, ich weiß es nicht. Ich habe ein Interweave-Abo und würde das auch beibehalten. Andere Zeitschrifen würde ich fallweise kaufen, wenn mich der Inhalt interessiert. So zum Beispiel die Rowan-Hefte oder Vogue Knitting. Interesse hätte ich vor allem an verschiedenen Sonderheften zu unterschiedlichen Strickthemen.

Ich habe wirklich versucht, aus einem meiner hässlichen Sockenwollsorten eine Wandersocke zu stricken, die ich unter hohen Stiefeln und langen Hosen tragen könnte. Es funktioniert einfach nicht. Ich mag das Zeug nicht verstricken, und je weniger Arbeit und Mühe ich dort hineinstecke, desto besser. Zudem ist das Garn von schlechter Qualität. Daher habe ich das Vorhaben aufgegeben und stattdessen die Mameluke Socks aus dem Buch Folk Socks von Nancy Bush begonnen. Die gefallen mir (ebenso das Garn), ich kann Fair-Isle-Technik üben und alle sind zufrieden. Stricken soll ja Spaß machen, und das ist nicht der Fall, wenn ich meine Zeit mit Projekten verplempere, gegen die ich eine Abneigung habe.

I really did my very best and tried to knit a pair of hiking socks and use up one of the yarns I dislike. My idea was to wear them hidden under boots and long trousers. But this does not work. I simply don’t want to knit with this yarn. It’s not just ugly, it’s of poor quality. The less effort I invest, the better. Therefore I gave up this plan and started with the Mameluke Socks from the book Folk Socks by Nancy bush. I like them (and the yarn I use as well), it’s a good opportunity to practice fair-isle, and that’s it. For me knitting is fun, but just as long as I don’t have to spend time on projects I deeply dislike.

Heute hatte mein bescheidener Blog seinen 10 000. Besucher. Dies nehme ich zum Anlass, um mich bei allen Besuchern zu bedanken (nur die Spambots möchte ich hiervon ausschließen). Danke an die stillen LeserInnen, danke an alle, die einen Kommentar hinterlassen, denn das zeigt doch, dass das, was man schreibt, auch gelesen wird und seine Resonanz findet. Danke auch an alle, die mir nach meinem Umzug hierher gefolgt sind und mir als Leser erhalten blieben.

Thanks to all the silent readers, thanks to all who leave a comment. This shows to me that the stuff I’m writing found it’s readers. Thanks to all users as well who came with me when I moved my blog to its new place in the WWW.

In erster Linie ist ein Blog natürlich ein Stricktagebuch, wobei es eine wichtige kommunikative Komponente gibt. Man bekommt Reaktionen auf das, was man tut oder sagt, wenn man ein Problem hat, gibt es Hilfestellungen, Fragen werden beantwortet, und vielleicht hat man sogar mal das Glück, jemandem weiterhelfen zu können mit dem, was man schreibt, oder jemanden zu inspirieren, ihm neue Wege aufzuzeigen, neue Ideen vermitteln etc.

First of all, a blog is a diary, of course. But there is a very important communicative element. There are reactions on the things I write or do. If there is a problem, there is always someone who is happy to provide me with the information needed. Questions are answered, and maybe I’m that lucky sometimes to help someone with the things I write or can be an inspiration, show new paths, to put a new idea across to someone.

Das Bloggen hat mein eigenes Verhalten verändert: als reine Leserin war ich eher Konsumentin. Wenig aktiv las ich zwar die Einträge, die mich interessierten, aber kommentiert habe ich selten. Das tut mir heute leid, denn ich weiß jetzt, dass jeder Kommentar eine Bestätigung meiner Tätigkeit ist (naja, der “willige-Frauen”-Kram natürlich nicht…). Also kommentiere ich auch häufiger, lese andere Blogs intensiver und habe dadurch nette Leute kennengelernt, viele Ideen und Inspirationen bekommen.

Since I am a blogger myself, my own behavior changed a lot. As a mere reader I was a consumer. Less active, I mostly read the blogs of others, mostly silent, a quiet visitor. Leaving a comment was an exception. I’m a bit sorry for this because I know now that every comment is an acknowledgement to my blogging. Therefore I leave comments in the blog of my fellow knitters more frequently. I read their texts more systematically. So I found new knitting companions in the virtual world (which is a part of the real one, of course), I was inspired and fed with new ideas.

Und dafür bedanke ich mich jetzt mal.
