Auf den ersten Blick wirken Elizabeth Zimmermanns Bücher nicht sonderlich attraktiv auf den von “Coffee-Table-Books” verwöhnten Stricker. Sie sind nicht reich bebildert; Illustrationen beschränken sich auf Zeichnungen oder uralte Fotos, sie haben eine Menge Text und keine hypermodischen Modelle. Außerdem sind sie teuer.
Wer Zimmermanns Bücher unbeachtet liegenläßt, wird es jedoch bedauern, da sie einen ganz eigenen Blickwinkel auf das Stricken werfen: man findet keine bloßen Erklärungen, wie man ein Kleidungsstück nachstricken kann, sondern lernt, wie es sich aufbaut, worauf es ankommt und wie man mit Maßen kreativ umgeht. Das bedeutet einerseits, dass man jedes Modell seiner Größe und seinem Geschmack anpassen kann, andererseits auch, wie man seine eigenen Kleidungsstücke designed. Die im Buch gezeigten Modelle sind eher klassisch (Raglanpullover etc.), können aber mit jedem modischen Detail versehen werden, das man sich vorstellen kann.
“Knitting around” widmet sich exklusiv allem was in Runden gestrickt werden kann, und das ist mehr, als man auf den ersten Blick denkt, inklusive dem berühmten Moebius-Schal. Wer ein Mal in Runden gestrickt hat, wird die Vorteile nicht mehr missen wollen: keine oder kaum Nähte und eine einmalige Passform, da man sich die Teile exakt auf Figur berechnet.
Zimmermann schrieb ihre Anleitungen ausführlich nieder, so dass man sich nicht mit unendlich verstümmelten Sätzen und unverständlichen Abkürzungen herumschlagen muss. Man hat bei jedem Schritt das Gefühl, von der Autorin begleitet zu werden. Abgerundet wird das Buch durch biografische Notizen dieser humorvollen, genialen und interessanten Frau, die besonders in den USA als stricktechnisches Genie verehrt wird (und das zu Recht…).
Zimmermanns unschlagbare Stärke ist ihre Fähigkeit, Stricken als kreative und nicht als imitierende Technik zu vermitteln und so ihren Lesern zu ermöglichen, ihre wirklich eigenen Kleidungsstücke zu entwerfen – von klassisch bis avantgardistisch. Jedes ihrer Bücher wendet sich an StrickerInnen jedes Kenntnisstandes, wobei sie Anfängern die Angst vor Neuem nimmt und Fortgeschrittene hilfreiche Techniken und Details finden, die das Stricken erleichtern und bereichern.

At first sight, Zimmermann’s books don’t look too attractive to the knitter who is used to flashy designs, glossy full-colour-photographs and coffee-table books. Her publications seem to be rather humble: tons of text, only a few illustrations (mostly drawings) and no vanguard patterns at all. Besides that, they are not really to call a bargain.
But the knitter who exerts him- or herself to take a closer look at them will find an unfailing treasure of knowledge and know-how that is really helpful. Zimmermann had an unique view on knitting which influenced many contemporary designers and which is dramatically different from books which teach only following one instruction after the next. Here the ambitious knitter can learn how a pattern “works”, what is important for a knitting success and how to deal with measurements and patterns in a creative way. She teaches how to make a garment to a real good fitting favourite, how to adapt it to one’s physiognomy and taste. Her patterns are rather classic (Raglan e.g.), but this will hinder no one really to transform it to a modern, flashyone, if desired.
“Knitting around” is dedicated exclusively to knitting in rounds, and this is more one can imgagine, including a moebius scarf. The ones who knitted a garment in rounds once will cherish the appreciate the advantages of this technique: it is completely or nearly seamless and really well fitting.
Zimmermann wrote her instructions in full text, so the reader doesn’t have to clown around with mutilated texts and cryptic abbreviations. One has the feeling to be accompanied by this poised and good humored author. The book is rounded out by authobiorgraphical chapters which give a very interested insight in the life of Elizabeth Zimmermann who is widely recognized and admired as a knitting genius.
It is Zimmermann’s unbeatable strengh to impart knitting as a creative and not as an imitating technique. This enables her readers to design their own garments and frees them from sticking to each and every word of a (maybe misleading) instruction. Her books are interesting for beginners as well as for advanced knitters. The firstones will learn not to be afraid of anything, the others will find interesting and highly useful details which make knitting much more easy and enjoyable.

Am 9. Juni findet wieder der “world wide knit in public day” statt, also sozusagen der internationale Tag des Strickens, an dem sich StrickerInnen an einem öffentlichen Ort treffen, um gemeinsam ihrem Hobby zu fröhnen.
Wie findet ihr die Idee? Würdet ihr selbst gern bei einem Treffen in eurer Nähe dabei sein oder sogar selbst eins organisieren wollen?

Strenggenommen brauche ich dafür keinen Extratag. In Hamburg treffen wir uns alle 14 Tage in einer Gaststätte, also in der Öffentlichkeit, um zu stricken. Außerdem habe ich bei jeder sich bietenden Gelegenheit mein Strickzeug dabei.
Dennoch finde ich die Idee witzig, da es helfen würde, Stricken auch in Deutschland von seinem Oma-Image zu befreien. Ich wäre also auf jeden Fall dabei und würde -wenn’s denn unbedingt sein muss – auch bei der Organisation helfen.

Es ist natürlich verrückt, noch etwas Neues anzufangen, wenn man meine WIP-Situation betrachtet, aber ich konnte nicht widerstehen. Ich habe den Scarf with the striped border from Weldon’s Volume 5 aus dem Buch “Victorian Lace Today” begonnen. Es ist wirklich ein einfaches Muster, das schnell geht und viel Spaß macht. Verwendet habe ich URU-Wolle, natürlich aus meinem wohlsortierten Wollager. Allerdings werde ich ihn breiter stricken als in der Vorlage angegeben, so dass er eher Tuchcharakter erhalten wird.

Of course it’s absolutely crazy to start a new project, regarding my current WIP-situation. But I couldn’t resist and started the Scarf with the striped border from Weldon’s Volume 5 (Victorian Lace Today). It’s fast, it’s fun and it’s fairly easy to knit. I use handpainted lace-yarn from Uruguay from my stash for thisone. But I think I will knit it a bit broader than shown in the book, so it will be more of a shawl than a scarf.

Erst habe ich mich beschwert, dass es keine Knitalongs für mich gibt, jetzt kann ich mich kaum retten. Ich habe mich in Julimonds Victorian Lace Knitalong angemeldet. Als hätte ich nicht schon genug Projekte am Start, aber dafür reduziert es ja auch meinen Stash.

Some time ago I complained that there are no knitalong I want to join, but now there are so many that it’s impossible for me to join them all. But I registered with Julimond’s German Victorian Lace Knitalong. And this although I have so many works in progress. But at least it will help me to reduce my stash.

Ich war eisern und habe mich ans selbst auferlegte Wollkauf-Verbot gehalten. Das gilt allerdings nicht für Bücher, daher präsentiere ich stolz meine Neuzugänge.
Neben drei Büchern von Elisabeth Zimmermann ist auch eins von Barbara Walker dabei. Ich habe nämlich vor, mich in diesem Jahr mit der Strickweise Zimmermanns zu beschäftigen und habe mit diesem Kauf nun die Sammlung der gedruckten Werke der Zimmermann-Werke komplettiert. Die Bücher sind ganz anders als die meisten, die heutzutage herauskommen. Auf den ersten Blick machen sie alle nicht viel her. Viel Text, wenig Bild, relativ schlichte Modelle. Die aber haben es in sich: sie sind exemplarisch zu sehen. Wer bereit ist, sich damit zu beschäftigen, wird schnell feststellen, dass die Autorin einen völlig neuen Blick auf das Stricken ermöglicht, abseits von den akribischen Beschreibungen. Sie ermöglichen letztendlich eigene, unabhängige Designs abseits schlecht sitzender Modelle und unbequemer Passformen.

I stick truly to my stash-reduction plan. Yes I do. But books do not count, and today my latest order arrived: three books by Elizabeth Zimmermann and one by Barbara Walker. I am planning to work through Zimmermann’s approach to knitting. Now I own all the books available by Zimmermann. These books are dramatically different from the ones sold today. On first sight they seem to be rather plain and humble: no colour photos, only a few pictures, tons of text, the patterns rather plain and simple. But the first impression is misleading. One has to see them as models for creative knitting. If one is willing to work with these books, will find out soon that the author enables the knitter a completely different view on knitting which has not much to do with painstaking instructions. They enable the knitter to develop her (or his) own, unique designs which have nothing to do with badly fitting and uncomfortable patterns.

Gestern habe ich mich spontan for Project Spectrum 2.0 angemeldet. Ich habe mich schon immer für den Farbenkreis sowie die einzelnen Farben interessiert, wobei bei mir ein starkes Gefälle vorhanden ist bezüglich derFarben, mit denen ich mich umgebe und denen, die ich kaum wahrnehme und die in meinem Leben keine Rolle spielen. Hier ist also die Gelegenheit, sich diesen Farben etwas zu widmen und ihnen näherzukommen. Project Spectrum erlaubt eine große Auswahl an Techniken, so dass ich mich nicht ausschließlich dem Stricken hingeben werde.

Yesterday I registered spontaneously for this year’s Project Spectrum 2.0. I was always attracted by the circle of colours, although there are many I am not very familiar with regarding the use in my daily or creative life. Here is an opportunity to take a closer look to these colours which are strongly under-represented in my life. Project Spectrum offers a wide range of techniques to use on one’s way of colours’ exploration, so I won’t stick to knitting exclusively.

Die Aktion startet im Februar. Jeweils zwei Monate sind einer Gruppe von drei Farben gewidmet. Diese wurden zufällig ermittelt, und man kann sich aussuchen, ob man alle drei behandeln möchte oder vielleicht nur eine oder zwei davon.

Project Spectrum starts on February 1. There are groups of three colours (picked randomly) for each of the two month’s span. The participants can choose whether to work on all three of them or maybe only on one or two.

February/March: blue white grey
April/May: green yellow pink
June/July: red black metallics
August/September: brown orange purple

Natürlich fällt mir zu einigen Farben sehr viel, zu anderen spontan fast gar nichts ein. Ich werde mich, was die Techniken betrifft, beschränken, da ich nicht der Meinung bin, dass ein “Mehr” an Techniken auch ein Mehr an Kreativität mit sich bringt.
Ich werde mich also auf das Stricken, das Fotografieren und das Kochen beschränken (wobei ich die Ergebnisse des Letzten wiederum fotografieren werde, da sie anders außerhalb des privaten Rahmens nicht zu präsentieren sind *g*). Ich bin auch entschlossen, mich jeder Farbe irgendwie zu widmen.

Of course I have a multitude of ideas regarding some of the colours, and a fair lack of them regarding others (as it is…). I will limit my creative work to only a few techniques, since I have the opinion that “more” techniques do not mean “more” creativity automatically.
My techniques will be (as far as I know now) knitting, photographing and cooking (I will take pictures of the results of the latter one since there is no other way of presenting them to a wider public ). And I am determined to apply myself to each of the colours at least a bit.

Und dies sind die Ideen, die mir spontan in den Sinn gekommen sind:
Februar/März: Lettische oder estnische Handschuhe in den entsprechenden Farben stricken. Lustigerweise habe ich entsprechendes Material bereits im Haus für genau dieses Projekt – sehr praktisch. Begleitet werden könnte dies von einer Fotoserie, so es geruht, hier mal winterlich zu werden.
April/Mai: Grün und Pink (eine leichtere Variante) werde ich wohl in einem Fünfeck-Pullover von Norah Gaughn (Knitting Nature) verwursten. Entsprechendes Kauni-Effektgarn habe ich im Haus (jaja, ich weiß…). Zu Gelb fällt mir sicherlich noch was ein… Blumenfotos vielleicht? Außerdem habe ich mir in Cornwall eine kleine Maske des Grünen Mannes gekauft, die könnte ich endlich mal bemalen.
Juni/Juli: als alte Gothic-Frau habe ich überhaupt keine Schwierigkeiten, mir etwas zu rot und schwarz einfallen zu lassen. Schwierig wird es eher werden, etwas auszuwählen. Zur Farbgruppe Metallic habe ich eine Idee, die ich “flüssiges Silber” genannt habe, die aber noch reifen muss.
August/September: Braun und orange sind überhaupt nicht meine Farben. Also so wirklich gar nicht. Zu Orange fällt mir spontan nur mein Rezept für tunesischen Orangensalat ein. Na gut, es wird sich sicher was fotografieren lassen… Lila ist wiederum überhaupt kein Problem, auch hier werde ich Mühe haben, eine unter vielen Ideen und Möglichkeiten auzuwählen.

And here are the ideas I sponaneously have regarding the colours:
February/March: Latvian or Estonian mittens. I wanted to knit them for a long time and already purchased yarn in the colours blue, grey and white (do I believe in the concept of coincidence? not really…). This might be accompanied by a series of photographs, if there will be any chance for winter this year…
April/May: I have this pentagon sweater in mind, from the book knitting nature by Norah Gaughn. Accidentally I have some yarn in my stash which would cover the colours green and (light) pink. It’s a Kauni effect yarn which I bought last year for this project, and maybe this will be the time to start with it. I am pretty sure I will have an idea for the colour yellow when the time will come. Besides that, I purchased a mask of the Green Man during my last year’s holiday in Cornwall. I could paint this…
June/July: as a long standing Goth I don’t see any difficulties to do something in red and black, it will be more difficult to choose a project out of the multitude of ideas. For the metallic colours I have an idea I call “liquid silver”, but thisone has to ripen yet.
August/September: brown and orange give me a hard time since these are absolutely not “my” colours. Really not. The only idea I have is this recipe for Tunesian oranges’ salad… Well, I’m sure I’ll find something to take pictures of. Purple is much better, here I have again many ideas.

Jede/r StrickerIn braucht einen Plan B, wenn man ein Geschenk für andere strickt. Optimal wäre auch noch Plan C (wenn auch ein wenig überorganisiert), aber B ist das absolute Minimum und Pflicht. Plan B greift, wenn man mit Plan A nicht weiterkommt oder weiß, dass man nicht fertig wird, weil das nur möglich wäre, wenn der Tag mindestens 48 Stunden hat.

Bei mir ist der Moment für Plan B gekommen.
Der oben gezeigte Grass-Basket Cropped Ruana Shawl aus dem Buch Arctic Lace muss bis zum 15. Januar fertig sein, weil dann meine Mutter Geburtstag hat. Die Hoffnung stirbt zwar zuletzt, aber ein wenig Realitätssinn hat auch niemanden umgebracht.
Daher lautet Plan B, das Tuch so weit wie möglich fertigzustellen und ihr das unfertige Produkt aus dem Modeatelier Jinx auch zu zeigen, aber gleichzeitig eine fertig gestrickte Mütze zu überreichen. Die hat sie sich gewünscht, es ist wieder ein Modell aus dem Buch Hip Knit Hats.

Each and every knitter needs a Plan B, if one knits something as a present. Even better is to have even Plan C in mind, but that’s maybe a bit over-organized. But plan B is not mandatory, it’s a must. Plan B comes into play if plan A does not work as it’s supposed to do. Maybe the instruction is badly misleading, or one is too stupid to follow it properly, or one does not have enought time.
It’s time for me now to understand that I need to revive plan B. The picture above shows the Grass-Basked Cropped Ruana shawl (whatever Ruana may be…) from the book Arctic Lace. It’s a birthday present for my mother which will take place on January 15. I abandoned hope to finish it on time. Plan B is to knit her a hat from the book Hip Knit Hats. She asked for it anyway and it will be done quickly. I will hand thisone over and show the shawl to her. For being successful it should become a bit bigger until then…

Nachdem so viele BloggerInnen ihre Projekte für 2007 präsentieren, möchte ich natürlich da nicht zurückstehen.
Zunächst möchte ich meine angefangenen Projekte fertigstellen, da wären besonders zu nennen:

• Grass-Basked cropped Ruana Shawl (Arctic Lace), ist ein Geburtstagsgeschenk für meine Mutter.
• Cardigan for Arwen (Interweave Knits, Winter 2006)
• Zara, der erst-Weihnachts-dann-Sylvesterpullover (Rowan Bigger Picture), den ich jetzt zusammennähen müsste *grusel*
• Irregular Rib Sweater with Toggle (Loop d’ Loop), auf den hätte ich richtig Lust.
• Raspy (Rowan Denim), sollte bis zum Sommer fertig werden (ist ja auch ein Sommerpullover)
• Graues Wintertop (Rowan Big Wool): es feht nicht mehr viel, aber es ist so langweilig (siehe Zara) – und es zieht zwingend ein Paar Abendhandschuhe nach sich.
• Skeleton Scarf (Arctic Lace), mein eigenes Laceprojekt
• Laibach Hood (eigener Entwurf), mein Freund wartet schon und es wäre wirklich nur noch ein Abend…

Ich habe mir vorgenommen, zumindestens einige dieser Altlasten zügig zu beseitigen.

Many knitting bloggers proudly present the projects they want to start (or finish) during the new year. This inspired me and so I made my own lists with the things I want to knit (or finish) this year.
First of all I want to finish at least some of my WIPs:

• Grass-Basked cropped Ruana Shawl (Arctic Lace), a birthday present for my mother.
• Cardigan for Arwen (Interweave Knits, Winter 2006)
• Zara, the first-christmas-then-new-year’s-eve-sweater (Rowan Bigger Picture), which I had to sew now (how horrid!), besides that: boredom reached a new dimension.
• Irregular Rib Sweater with Toggle (Loop d’ Loop), I’d love finishing thisone!
• Raspy (Rowan Denim), should be finished until summer.
• Grey Winter Top (Rowan Big Wool): it’s not much left to do, but it’s really boring to knit – and a Pair of evening gloves will inevitably follow.
• Skeleton Scarf (Arctic Lace), a lace project for me
• Laibach Hood (my first own pattern), my companion is desperately waiting for it and there is only one evening to knit before finishing ist…

I am determined to finish at least some of these legacies quickly.

Neue Projekte wären:

• Ein schlichter, grauer Pullover (Knitting Emporium von Jo Sharp), die Wolle ist bestellt (und korekterweise werde ich meinen ersten Joker dafür verknallen). Hat das Zeug zum potentiellen Lieblingsstück.
• Donegal (Celtic Collection), mein zu beginnendes Fair-Isle-Projekt
• ein weiterer Pullover aus Rowan Denim für den Sommer
• ein Fünfeck-Pullover aus Knitting Nature
• Colour on Colour (Scarf Style)
• die Römermütze für meinen Freund
• ein Guernsey für meinen Freund
• ein Aran für mich aus Felted Tweed (bin mir über das Muster noch etwas uneins)
• Lettische und estnische Handschuhe
• mehr Stulpen für mich
• mehr Mützen für mich
• eine Mütze für meine Mutter
• einige Lace-Projekte

da fehlt bestimmt noch was, aber mir wird jetzt schon übel…

• A plain grey sweater(Knitting Emporium by Jo Sharp), I ordered the yarn for it last year, but it did not arrive yet. So I will use one of my wild cards for it. I think it will be a beloved favourite when finished.

I am sure I forgot something, but reading this I already now feel a bit nauseous.

Außerdem bin ich nach wie vor wild entschlossen, meinen Stash zu reduzieren. Daher habe ich ein eigenes Banner entworfen (“umarme deinen inneren Deutschen”…), mit dem ich alle Strickstücke, deren Material aus meinen Beständen kommt, versehen werde (im Blog natürlich), quasi als Gütesiegel und als Ermutigung (die werde ich brauchen können…).

Besides that, I am still very, very strong-willed to reduce my stash. Therefore I designed a banner for me (to embrace my inner German, probably…) which I will put on every item I knit from my stash (just in my blog, of course…). This will work as a kind of seal of approval and as a further encouragement as well (the latter one I will desperately need, I’m afraid).

Wie viele Off Topics (nicht zum Thema Handarbeiten gehörende Themen) akzeptiert ihr beim Bloglesen, oder gefällt euch das überhaupt nicht?

Akzeptieren tue ich praktisch alles, nur lesen muss ich es nicht.
Im Ernst: ich bevorzuge reine Strickblogs, da doch das gemeinsame Hobby verbindet und ich immer das Gefühl habe, dass die doch teilweise recht persönlichen Details mich nichts angehen. Letztere kann man gegebenenfalls per E-mail austauschen. Ich lese eben am liebsten über Strickereien, Filzen, Wolle, Bücher und was noch so dazugehört. Wenn andere Themen in einem Blog überhand nehmen, ist er meist für mich nicht so interessant, wobei Ausnahmen die Regel bestätigen können.
