So, ich bin mit den “Interlocking Balloons” fast fertig und das bringt mich zwangsläufig zu der Frage, wie stark dieser Schal wirklich gespannt werden sollte. Im Buch und auch bei denen, die den Schal bereits gestrickt haben, scheint es üblich zu sein, ihn sehr stark zu spannen, so dass die Dreidimensionalität des Musters verloren geht. Ein Beispiel für vorher/nachher gibt es hier. Jetzt gefällt mir aber das Dreidimensionale sehr gut und ich bin absolut uneins, wie stark ich die Hügel (die dem Stück bei mir zu Hause übrigens den Namen “Tittenschal” eingebracht hat) wirklich plattdrücken sollte… (zur Info: das Garn ist reines Alpaca)
Wie gesagt, ich bin für jede Meinung dankbar.

I am about to finish the “Interlocking Balloons” and this brings me to the question how this piece should be blocked properly. The pictures in the book and on the web show it quite strongly blocked, with the rather hilly parts almost flattened (the hilliness made us to call it “tits scarf” at home). An example can be found here. This almost eliminates the three-dimensionality of the pattern which I learned to like. So I am rather uneasy to which extend this scarf should be blocked (I used pure alpaca for it). I would be very grateful if you tell me your opinions.

To block or not to block?

Immer wenn Leute meiner Altersstufe oder jünger erfahren, dass ich sehr gerne und regelmäßig stricke, ist das Erstaunen groß. Wohlwollende Stimmen sprechen von “Gemütlichkeit” und fühlen sich an ihre Oma erinnert, andere verwenden gerne Ausdrücke wie “bieder” oder “langweilig”. Dem trete ich nun offensiv entgegen, da ich weder bieder noch langweilig noch ein Omatyp bin. Daher sage ich ab jetzt folgendes:

Als moderne, gebildete, emanzipierte Frau von heute, die mitten im Leben steht, möchte ich dieses selbst gestalten. Dazu gehört für mich auch, dass ich mir nicht von irgendwelchen “Designern” Kleidung aufs Auge drücken lasse. Vor allem dann nicht, wenn ich sie unbequem, unvorteilhaft, sexistisch, belanglos oder meiner Persönlichkeit nicht entsprechend empfinde. Dies ist je nach aktueller Mode häufig der Fall. Ich entscheide selbst, wie ich aussehe, welche Schnitte und Farben ich trage oder wie lang oder kurz meine Kleidungsstücke sind. Dass Gestricktes wesentlich bequemer als gewebte Stoffe ist, beweist der Siegeszug des T-Shirts. Ich trage, was mir gefällt und sorge dafür, dass ich das auch bekomme und mich nicht in Dinge kleiden muss, die aussehen, als wären sie direkt den Alpträumen der Designer entsprungen. Ich entscheide, wie ich aussehen möchte. Und: als geistig arbeitender Mensch kenne ich die tiefe Befriedigung, die das Herstellen von Dingen mittels Handarbeit und ohne aufwändige “Bastelpackung” einem verschaffen kann. Daher stricke ich und bin stolz darauf. Und mal ganz abgesehen davon: es macht einfach nur SPASS!

When people learn I’m a dedicated knitter, they usually are amazed. There are two types of reaction. Some think of knitting as rather comfy and recollect it with their grandmothers. The others use expressions like “boring” or “unsophisticated”. Since I’ m nor a grandma-type neither boring, I will counter this with a knitter’s manifesto:

As a modern, liberated, educated, intellectual woman who lives by her own rules and enjoys this, I am absolutely not willing to be imposed by any designers to any kind of garment I do not like to wear. Especially if it is uncomfortable, unfavourable, sexist, trivial, or not matching my personality. Depending on the actual fashion trends, this happens quite often. I want to decide myself how I dress and look, which colours and cut I want to wear. Knitted fabrics are much more comfortable to wear than woven ones; the wordwide victory of the t-shirs proves this impressingly. I only want to wear clothes I like and I take care that I get these without clowning around with garments which look like they emanated directly from a designer’s nightmare. I want to decide about my look and style. Besides that, my occupation is rather intellectual, and I know about the satisfaction provided by producing items with one’s bare hands. That’s why I knit, and I’m proud of it. And – last but not least: it’s just FUN!

Ich war am Wochenende fleißig und habe mich eines UFOs angenommen. Und siehe da, der Skully-Pullover ist fertig geworden! Er ist groß, warm und flauschig, und ich kann ihn bei diesem Wetter ohne Jacke tragen. Außerdem ist er das perfekte Outfit für meine regelmäßigen Besuche in St. Pauli und im Schanzenviertel.
Das Material ist Drops Eskimo, Farben: 001 und 002. Das Modell stammt aus dem Buch Stitch n’ Bitch von Debbie Stoller. Ich habe lediglich das Ärmelmotiv modifiziert, da mir der von mir verwendete Schädel besser gefällt als der im Original verwendete. “Mein” Schädel ist ein freies Motiv und findet sich hier.

I was busy at the weekend and decided to finish one of my UFOs. I really managed to finish the Skully Sweater! It is big, warm and cozy, I can wear it outside without any more coat (at least at the moment). Besides that, it is the perfect outfit for me when I visit St. Pauli or the Schanzenviertel. The yarn is Drops Eskimo (colours: 001 and 002). The basic pattern is “skully” from the Stitch n’ Bitch Book by Debbie Stoller. I decided to modify the sleeve motif, since I like the one I used more than the one suggested in the book. “My” skull is a free pattern which can be found here.

Die “Interlocking Balloons” machen gute Fortschritte. Das Muster ist kompliziert, aber man findet sich hinein und es macht viel Spaß, es zu stricken. Mehr als die Hälfte ist bereits geschafft. Das Garn (Drops Alpaca) ist einfach ein Traum!

I made also a good progress with the “Interlocking Balloons” – scarf. The pattern is not easy to knit, but it is not too hard and really fun to knit. I did more than the half of it until now and the yarn (Drops Alpaca) is just wonderful!

Außerdem habe ich einen neuen Pullover begonnen. Es ist der “irregular rib raglan with toogle” aus dem Buch Loop d’ Loop von Teva Durham. Er ist extravagant, aber einfach zu stricken. Er wird mein “Erholungsprojekt” sein, bevor ich mich in das Abenteuer Fair Isle stürze.

And I started with a new sweater. It’s the “irregular rib raglan with toggle” from the book “Loop d’ Loop” by Teva Durham. It is sort of a “recreation project” before I start the big adventure Fair Isle.

Es gibt ja mehrere Arten, Halbpatent zu stricken. Welche bevorzugst du und warum? Tiefer gestochene Maschen? Die Umschlagmethode? Oder kennst du sogar noch ein paar mehr?

Hä? Ich mag Patentmuster generell nicht so besonders und stricke sie selten. Aber wenn’s denn sein muss, dann bevorzuge ich die tiefer gestochenen Maschen. Das ist nicht ganz so ein Labberkram.

Ich bin keine Christin und lehne es normalerweise strikt ab, mich vor dem ersten Dezember mit Weihnachten gedanklich auch nur ansatzweise zu beschäftigen. Dieses Jahr ist jedoch alles anders. Ich stricke das erste Mal Weihnachstgeschenke, wenn auch nur für zwei Leute, und da muss man einfach früher anfangen.
Gestern ist meine Bestellung angekommen: Drops Alpaka in einem lebendigen, leicht farblich changierenden Hellgrau, aus dem ich den Schal “Interlocking Balloons” aus dem Buch Scarf Style von Pam Allen für meine Mutter stricke. Im dritten Anlauf habe ich das geeignete Garn für dieses Modell gefunden. Wenn ich mit dem fertig bin, hat sie noch eine weitere Mütze bestellt (die erste wurde dankend und begeistert aufgenommen). Momentan stricke ich lauter graue Dinge: die Mützen, das Wintertop (in dicker Wolle glatt rechts – *gähn*, aber die Handschuhe werden es reißen), den Schal und dann den nächsten Pullover für mich.
Das Foto zeigt den Schalanfang. Mir gefällt das Muster mit dem Garn sehr gut. Die Ballons winden sich ineinander und blähen sich, ganz wie sie sollen und wie es auf dem Foto im Buch zu sehen ist (wobei der Schal dort leider in einem abschreckenden Kotzgrün ausgeführt wurde). Natürlich muss der Schal gespannt werden, wenn er fertig ist.

Außerdem habe ich in einem Anfall von geistiger Umnachtung Wolle für zwei weitere Pullover bestellt: Rowan Big Wool in Schwarz für einen dicken Winterpullover (der wird zwar langweilig zu stricken sein, aber wenigstens schnell gehen) und … Jamieson Shetland für meinen ersten Fair Isle.

Since I am not a Christian, I strictly refuse to engage myself mentally in the Christmas business before December 1rst. But this year I have to, since I want to knit some presents. There are just two who will receive these, but I have to start early if I want to finish them without any hurry.
Yesterday the Drops Alpaca arrived. It is bright grey, but the colour is really vivid. I use it for the scarf “Interlocking Balloons” from the book Scarf Style by Pam Allen. I am happy I found the right yarn for this expressive pattern in the third attempt … When I will be done with this, I will knit another hat for my mother (she accepted the firstone happily and ordered one more…). At the moment I knit (or plan to do so) only grey “things”: the hats, the scarf, a winter top, made of very thick yarn (really boring, but I think the gloves will make it…), another hat and – finally – a ribbed sweater for me.
The picture shows the beginning of the scarf. I think the yarn I chose makes a good match with the pattern. The balloons interlock and billow just as they are supposed to do and as it’s shown on the picture in the book (unfortunately the scarf there is executed in a rather deterrent vomit-green). Of course the scarf has to be blocked when finished.

In a seizure of mental derangement I ordered yarn for two more sweaters: Rowan Big Wool for a thick, blackone which will be a bore to knit but at least it will be done quickly…) and … Jamieson Shetland for my first attempt to do Fair Isle.

Es läuft nicht immer so, wie man es gerne hätte. Für meine Mutter habe ich den Schal “Interlocking Balloons” angefangen, nur dass ich feststellen musste, dass das von mir gewählte Garn nicht ganz geeignet ist. Gut, dafür habe ich das Muster schonmal geübt, und das ist ja auch was. Ich habe jetzt bei Wollsucht Drops Alpaca bestellt, was mit Sicherheit besser für dieses ausgefeilte Strukturmuster geeignet ist. Bis das kommt, schlage ich die Zeit mit der Wiederaufnahme von Raspy, dem Rowan-Denim-Baumwollpullover tot. Ich liebe die Optik von Rowan Denim, ich sehe ein, dass man nicht ganzjährig Wollpullover tragen kann, und das verstrickte Garn sieht sehr edel aus und fühlt sich gut an. Es wird nicht das letzte Projekt aus diesem Material sein (zwei weitere habe ich schon im Auge). Aber ehrlich – das Verstricken von Baumwolle kann mir vom Gefühl her gestohlen bleiben, da geht mir nichts über Wollgarne.

It doesn’t always come out the way we want. I just started with the scarf “Interlocking Balloons” for my mother, but it turned out the yarn I chose doesn’t work well with the pattern. Never mind, I had the opportunity to practice this pattern which is not so easy at the beginning. So I orderes at the Wollsucht shop Drops Alpaca, which is more convenient for the delicate cabled pattern. Until this will arrive, I resumed the “Raspy” Sweater I started during last summer. I love the look of Rowan Denim, I perfectly understand I cannot wear woolen sweaters the whole year around and the yarn looks very noble and feels good when knitted. It will not be the last project with this yarn (I have in mind at least two more), but, really, I couldn’t care less of knitting with cotton yarns, woolenones just feel much, much better.

Ich würde gerne an einem Knitalong teilnehmen und suche regelmäßig die einschlägigen Seiten ab. Aber irgendwie finde ich nichts passendes. Es ist nicht so, dass mir die Sachen nicht gefallen, aber die Projekte, die ich mir ausgesucht habe, gefallen mir eben besser. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass ich nicht so gern stricke, was alle (naja, nicht alle, aber viele) stricken. Jedenfalls werde ich weiter auf der Suche sein nach meinem perfekten Knitalong – oder irgendwann selbst einen starten.

I’d love to participate in a knitalong, therefore I check the relevant pages regularily. But unfortunately I don’t find something I really like. I like some of the projects, but I like the ones I chose for myself even more… Maybe the problem is that I don’t like to knit things everybody else knits (well, not really everybody, but a lot of people…). Anyway, I will go on looking out for the perfect knitalong for me – or I’ll start one myself sometime.

Beide stammen aus dem Buch Hip Knit Hats von Cathy Carron. Das Material ist wieder Pashmina von Lana Grossa, was wegen des Kaschmiranteils sehr angenehm am Kopf ist.

Well, not really galore, but I knitted two more hats. The leftone is for my mother (if she likes it…), and the rightone is for myself. I took the patterns from the book Hip Knit Hats by Cathy Carron. The yarn is again Pashmina by Lana Grossa, which is very comfortable to wear since it is very soft and not scratchy at all.

Jetzt kann ich mich wieder anderen Dingen zuwenden, wie dem Stricken eines Schals für meine Mutter. Ich habe das Modell “Interlocking Balloons” aus dem Buch Scarf Style von Pam Allen ausgesucht, weil es wirklich mal was anderes ist. Der Anfang ist allerdings sehr mühsam, mal sehen, ob es später, wenn das Muster erkennbar ist, besser läuft.

I like the pattern very much, it is very unusual, but it’s giving me really a hard time. I hope it will become more easy when the pattern will be visible.

Wie haltet ihr das mit dem Anstricken neuer Knäule – von innen oder von außen? Wickelt ihr das ganze Knäuel erst um, um Knoten zu entdecken, oder auf eine Kone? Wo lagert ihr während des Strickens euer Knäuel?

Ich stricke sie an, wie es bequemer ist: wenn ich lange fummeln muss, nehme ich den anderen Faden. Wobei ich inzwischen “außen” bevorzuge. Wenn ich selbst Stränge mittels einer Schirmhaspel zu Knäulen gewickelt habe, nehme ich von diesen den Faden von außen.

Umgewickelt wird nicht, was auch daran liegt, dass ich kaum Garne mit Musterrapport verstricke (ist wohl auch eher für die “vorwiegend Socken”-Fraktion interessant, zu der ich nicht gehöre). Gewickelt werden bei mir natürlich Stränge, aber sonst nichts.
Während des Strickens darf mein Knäuel sich freien Auslauf gönnen – es sei denn, ich stricke in der Öffentlichkeit, dann befindet es sich in einer Tüte (meist Plastik).
