Es gibt wahrscheinlich keine unter uns, die zur Zeit nicht an einem, mehreren oder vielen gestrickten Weihnachtsgeschenken arbeitet. Aber wie sieht es andersherum aus? Wer von euch wünscht sich oder bekommt zu Weihnachten Geschenke, die (auch in weitestem Sinn) im Zusammenhang mit Stricken stehen? Was genau wünscht ihr euch?

Ich tausche eigentlich nur mit meinem Lebensgefährten und meiner Mutter Geschenke aus, und die schenken mir nichts, was irgendwie im Zusammenhang mit dem Thema Stricken steht. Das liegt daran, dass ich woll-, nadel- und buchtechnisch gesehen hervorragend ausgerüstet bin und momentan da keine Defizite sehe (eher im Gegenteil, ich muss dringend mein Wolllager abbauen). Selbst wenn sie mir etwas in diese Richtung schenken wollten, wüssten sie kaum, was ich brauche, so dass ich mir das ohnehin selbst kaufen müsste.

Obwohl mir ein Blick auf den WIP-Status sagte, dass ich kein neues Projekt beginnen sollte, konnte ich es nicht erwarten und habe kurz mal eins angefangen. Ich wollte für den Anfang ein überschaubares, einfacheres Muster und habe mir den “Skeleton Scarf” aus dem Buch “Arctic Lace” ausgesucht. Einfach ist relativ; ich habe drei Mal neu angefangen, aber jetzt klappt es: es fühlt sich an wie Lace, sieht aus wie Lace (und wie die Abbildung im Buch) und es schmeckt wie … naja, haarig halt, das zählt also nicht. Daraus folgere ich messerscharf, dass es Lace IST. Nachdem ich mich hineingefunden habe, macht es sogar Spaß. Und das, obwohl ich am Anfang allen Lace-Enthusiasten sagen wollte, wo sie sich ihren Kram hinstecken… aber lassen wir das.

Außerdem schulde ich meinem Blog noch ein Foto vom “Irregular Rib Sweater with Toggle” aus dem Buch “Loop d’ Loop” von Teva Durham. Der strickt sich friedlich vor sich hin und ist momentan mein Projekt für unterwegs, denn er ist so schön einfach.

A quick look at my WIP status bar told me not to start with another project, but I could not resist: after my lace books arrived yesterday, I HAD to try it! For the beginning (I am a complete newbie in the lace business) I chose a project which is not too big and not too difficult. I decided to to the “Skeleton Scarf” from the book “Arctic Lace” first.
At the beginning it was not really easy for me: I had to start anew three times. But finally I can tell that I came, I saw, and I conquered. It feels just like lace, it looks like lace and it tastes like… well, somewhat hairy, thisone doesn’t count then… And after finding my way into this project, I can tell it’s fun.

The second picture shows the beginning of the “Irregular Rib Sweater with Toggle” from the book “Loop d’ Loop” by Teva Durham. This is fairly easy to do, therefore it is my current “on the road”-project.

Ich bin momentan nicht ansprechbar: Heute sind endlich die von mir bestellten Lace-Bücher gekommen: A Gathering of Lace, Arctic Lace und Victorian Lace Today.

Jetzt stellen sich mir folgende Fragen:

• Wann werde ich wieder bereit sein, Kontakt zur Außenwelt aufzunehmen?
• Wie soll ich die von mir zu strickenden Tücher in mein Strickprogramm aufnehmen?
• Wie geil ist das denn?

Am besten gefällt mir Victorian Lace.

Now the following questions turn up:

• When will I be ready to contact the world outside again?

Kurzes Update zur Filztasche: Sie sieht vielversprechend aus, braucht aber noch Feintuning, woran ich mich jetzt gleich machen werde. Bild folgt, sobald sie fertig ist.

A short update regarding my first felted bag: it looks rather promising but still needs some fine tuning. This is what I am going to do next. I will post a picture as soon as the bag is finished.

Ich habe fertig! Dies ist kein modernes, abstraktes Kunstwerk, sondern der Schal “Stripes and Bobbles” aus dem Buch Scarf Style von Pam Allen, passend zu den frühlingshaften Temperaturen, die zur Zeit in Hamburg herrschen. Der Schal ist auch für Anfänger sehr einfach zu stricken, wobei das ewige Wenden der Einzelteile (man strickt Reihen von 6 bis 10 Maschen) mich ab einem gewissen Punkt tierisch genervt hat. Da er sehr schnell geht, eignet er sich gut als Weihnachtsgeschenk auf den letzten Drücker.

Die Garnauswahl erwies sich als nicht ganz einfach: Im Original ist eine Tweedwolle angegeben, die hier in Europa kaum erhältlich ist. Auf der Suche nach einem Ersatz, der natürlich in diversen Farben erhältlich sein muss, stellte ich mal wieder fest, dass viele Tweedgarne zwar für Pullover akzeptabel, aber für Schals zu kratzig sind und dass einige sich nur zum Topfreinigen eignen… Fündig wurde ich schließlich bei Lana Grossa: der Royal Tweed ist wirklich weich und trägt sich sehr angenehm. Er hat eine samtig-filzigere Optik als das Originalgarn, was dem Modell aber sehr gut bekommt. Ich habe den Schal leicht abgewandelt, z. B. habe ich die Noppen ausschließlich in Weinrot gearbeitet, als Kontrast zu den übrigen Farben.
Es ist sicher kein Schal für jeden Tag, aber ein sehr extravagantes Teil, dass eine schlichte Garderobe hervorragend aufwerten kann.

Unglücklicherweise habe ich festgestellt, dass ich jetzt zwar über mehrere wunderschöne, starkfarbige, extravagante Schals verfüge, mir aber ein neutraler fehlt. So habe ich mir noch etwas Royal Tweed in Anthrazit besorgt und werde daraus den Schal “Braides Mischief” von Teva Durham aus demselben Buch stricken (man ist nie um eine Ausrede verlegen…)

I’m done! This is not an abstract work of art but the scarf “Stripes and Bobbles” from the book Scarf Style by Pam Allen. I finished it during a truly spring-like weather period (appr. 15 deg. Celsius…). The scarf is really easy to knit, even for beginners. Just the nonstop turning of the stripes got on my nerves after a while (6 to 10 stitches per row). Since it’s done quickly, it is a good last-minute present for christmas.

Choosing the yarn turned out to be rather difficult: since the original yarn is hardly available in Hamburg I had to look out for a substitute which had to be available in several colours. Wandering through my LYS I found out that most tweed yarns may be allright for sweaters, but not soft enough for wearing them around your neck on the bare skin. Some of them even might be suitable just for cleaning pots… Well, I found “Royal Tweed” by Lana Grossa after all. It is really soft and wears comfortably around the neck. It’s velvety-felty look is very much in line with the pattern.
I varied the original pattern slightly: I knit the bobbles in bordeaux exclusively and did not stick to the instructions slavishly regarding length and colouring of the stripes. This is no scarf for every day, but it can very well enhance a plain look a great deal and looks quite sophisticated.

Unfortunately I have now some very sophisticated, multi-coloured scarfs, but not a single one which is more reluctant… Therefore I purchased some balls of Lana Grossa Royal Tweed in anthrazite and will start knitting the “braided mischief”-scarf… (as if I needed an excuse for knitting).

Dies ist mein erster Versuch, eine Tasche zu filzen (eigentlich ist es auch die erste gestrickte Tasche…). Sie ist so unförmig, dass mein Freund sie “Turnbeutel” genannt hat. Ich konnte es natürlich nicht erwarten, schickte ein Gebet an die Göttin von Filz und Faser, lud sie in die Waschmaschine und startete sie. Ich bin verhalten pessimistisch, aber wir werden sehen.

Das Ding ist riesig und unförmig und weist einen echten Sozipäd-Look auf, allerdings habe ich eine Maschenprobe gefilzt, die sehr gelungen war (nix mehr Sozipäd und so…)

This is the first attempt to felt a bag (and the first attempt to knit one as well…). It is that bulky that my boyfried called it “PE-bag”. Of course I could not wait to begin with the felting process and started the washing machine right after weaving in the loose ends and after saying a little prayer to the goddess of felt and fiber. I am a bit pessimistic regarding the final result, but we will see…

The “bag” (if you want to call it so at the moment) is huge and rather bulky and has a rather rustic look. But the swatch I felted came out just great and was not rustic at all.

Endlich habe ich einen Knitalong gefunden, der mir gefällt. Und zwar den Fair Isle Knitalong, bei dem man freie Auswahl des Modells hat, was mir mehr liegt als solche, bei denen man auf ein Modell festgelegt ist.
Ich habe schon den Pullover ausgesucht (“Donegal” aus dem Buch “The Celtic Collection” von Alice Starmore), und die Wolle (Jamieson, stilecht) ist auch schon da. Dann werde ich mal nächste Woche beginnen. Es ist nämlich mal wieder Zeit für ein Langzeitprojekt.

Finally I found a knitalong I want to join: the Fair Isle Knitalong. Here one can choose the pattern one likes to knit, without being fixed to only one.
I already chose a sweater (“Donegal” from the book “The Celtic Collecion” by Alice Starmore), and the yarn (Jamieson, of course, to be in proper style) already arrived. So I will start next week, because I am really in time with the few christmas presents I want to knit. I want to have a long-term-project again!

Nachdem ich die “Interlocking Balloons” fertiggestellt habe und der Schal “Stripes and Bobbles” kurz vor der Vollendung steht (Bild folgt), bin ich vom Schalstricken genervt und sehne mich nach etwas “mindless knitting”. Daher habe ich jetzt mutig mit einer zu filzenden Tasche begonnen. Das Stricken ist so mindless, wie es nur sein kann (rechte Maschen in Runden), die Wolle ist dick und verstrickt sich leicht und die Tasche nimmt recht formlose Konturen an (von denen ich hoffe, dass sich das nach dem Filzen bessert). Ein wenig ängstlich bin ich schon, da ich außer Maschenproben noch nie was gefilzt habe, aber es wird schon schiefgehen. Wenn alle Stricke reißen, kann ich immer noch Untersetzer und Sachets daraus machen.

After finishing the “Interlocking Balloons” and almost finishing the scarf “Stripes and Bobbles” (I will take a picture of it soon), I am a bit on the edge. I feel the urgent need to do some mindless knitting. Therefore I started bravely knitting a bag which is going to be felted. The knitting is as mindless as it can be (stockinette in rounds), the yarn is nice, soft, and rather thick, an easy knit and the bag takes a rather shapeless shape. I hope this will improve after felting and forming. I am a bit chicken-hearted about felting it, due to the fact I never really felted before, but I hope it will come out o.k. If it doesn’t come out as it’s supposed to be at all, I still can cut it and make some sachets and coasters…

Sie sind fertig! Nach dem Spannen bin ich recht zufrieden. Es ist ja ein Weihnachtsgeschenk für meine Mutter und ich hoffe, es wird ihr gefallen. Das Stricken dieses Schals ist nicht ganz einfach und geht auch nicht besonders schnell, also nichts für Anfänger oder Leute, die den Schal möglichst schnell fertig haben wollen. Aber es lohnt sich (wie ich finde). Das Muster eignet sich nicht für dicke, steife, genoppte oder selbstmusternde Garne.

Von dem Garn bin ich sehr begeistert, es verstrickt sich unglaublich angenehm und ist hervorragend geeignet für alle Muster, die ein fließendes, weiches Garn erfordern. Die Farbe ist mittelgrau, schimmert aber an einigen Stellen in anderen Tönen (rötlich, bläulich, grünlich), was es sehr lebendig und interessant aussehen lässt. Es ist so weich, dass es auch von Menschen mit empfindlicherer Haut angenehm zu tragen ist.

Finally I made it! After blocking I am rather satisfied with the result. The scarf is a christmas present for my mother and I hope she will like it as well. The pattern is everything but easy. Therefore it cannot be recommended for beginners or knitters who are in need to finish it quickly. But it’s worth doing it, I think. The pattern is not suitable for thick, rather stiff yarns, bouclé-style or self-striping yarns.

I am very enthusiastic about this yarn, it feels wonderful during the knitting process and is very convenient for patterns which require a soft and rather voluble material. The colour is medium gray, but it shimmers slightly red, green or blue here and there. This makes a very vivid and interesting appearance. Due to the fact it’s 100% pure alpaca, it can be word by people with a rather delicate, sensitive skin.

Ein lieber Mensch möchte dir ein Strickbuch schenken. Da er nicht weiß, welches das richtige ist, lässt er dir die Wahl. Du darfst aussuchen, was du magst, unabhängig vom Preis. Welches wählst du? Kannst du begründen warum?

Ich muss gestehen, dass ich momentan alles habe, was mein Herz begehrte. Das Aran-Buch von Alice Starmore wäre allerdings eine Option, da der Preis ja keine Rolle spielt. Aus diesem Buch gefallen mir viele Modelle und einige würde ich gerne nachstricken. Ansonsten habe ich alles an mich gerafft, was mir gefiel.
