Gestern kam die Wolle für meinen cornischen Guernsey. Ich hatte mir in Penzance ein entsprechendes Buch gekauft und, sobald ich wieder in Hamburg war, die entsprechende Wolle gekauft: Rowan Scottish Tweed, Farbe Winter Navy. Ich finde sie wunderschön und auch die Strickprobe sieht toll aus.
Eigentlich bin ich keine Traditionalistin; ich würde einen Fischerpullover auch in grellen Farben und dicker Wolle stricken, wenn es mir so gefällt, aber dieser soll traditionell sein. Also: dünnes Garn (und ich meine damit SEHR dünn) und dunkelblaue Farbe.

Guernseys werden traditionell von unten nach oben in Runden gestrickt. Ich habe also 300 Maschen angeschlagen und angefangen. Es war bereits Abend, aber ich konnte es nicht abwarten. Die Beleuchtung war etwas funzelig, daher habe ich mich beim Rippenmuster verstrickt. Beim Auftrennen riss der Faden, also begann ich von neuem (wieder 300 Maschen). Alles war in Ordnung, bis ich nach einigen Reihen entdeckte, dass das Gestrick verdreht war und ich eine Art Möbius-Band produzieren würde. Ich trennte also wieder auf und begann zum dritten Mal – heute Morgen allerdings. Und siehe – alles gut, keine Fehler, keine unerwünschten Drehungen. War wohl nicht mein Tag gestern.

Eigentlich bin ich stricktechnisch recht versiert, so etwas ist mir noch nie passiert, aber irgendwann ist wohl immer das erste Mal…

Yesterday the yarn dedicated to become an original Cornish guernsey arrived. When I was in Penzance I purchased a book about traditional Cornish guernsey patterns and I was very keen on knitting one for myself.
Actually I am not a traditonalist at all, if it came to my mind I would not hesitate knitting a guernsey with thick wool and flamboyant colours, but thisone should be as they used to be in Cornwall 100 years ago. Therefore I chose a rather thin yarn and the traditional navy blue (Rowan Scottish Tweed, colour: Winter Navy)

The traditional guernsey is knit from below in rounds, starting with the ribbed part.
Enthusiastically I cast on 300 stitches (the yarn is VERY thin). It was already evening and the light was dim, but I could not wait to get started. After two rows I found out that I made a mistake with the ribs (the light was so dim that I could not tell the difference between knits and purls). When I ripped it up, the yarn was torn apart (did I already mention it is VERY thin?), so I had to start again with my beloved 300 stitches. Everything went just fine until I discovered I had a twist in the fabric, like this moebius stuff. For a guernsey this is unacceptable, therefore I started anew – this morning. Everything is fine, no twists, no confusion within the ribs. I am quite an experienced knitter, and something like that never happened before to me, but I think it was just not my day yesterday.

Ich habe mir mal wieder einige Strickbücher bestellt und gestern Abend stitch n ‘ bitch und stitch n’ bitch nation erhalten. Beides sind sehr gute Anleitungsbücher, besser als das dröge Ding, das ich bisher hatte. Die Modelle sind witzig, schrill und sehr jung, aber einiges werde ich mir daraus arbeiten.
In amerikanischen Strickforen gibt es einige Beschwerden über den Titel. Da dürfen Teenager das Buch nicht haben, andere fühlen sich beleidigt… man muss wohl AmerikanerIn sein, um das zu verstehen. Eher Verständnis bringe ich für den Ärger über den historischen Teil auf, der schlicht negiert, dass Stricken früher auch und vor allem Männersache war (ähnlich wie Holzhacken *g*). Trotzdem bleibt es für mich ein gutes Buch, ich bereue nicht, es gekauft zu haben.

Ooops, I did it again: I ordered some knitting books. Two of them I received yesterday: stitch’n bitch and stitch n’ bitch nation by Debbie Stoller. Both of them are very instructive; the explanaitions are extraordinary well written and understandable; they are much better done than the ones in the rather dry and boring ones in the one I already own. The patterns are funny, flashy, and rather for younger knitters, but I will do some of them.
In American knitting boards there is a lot of ado about the title of these books. Some teenagers are not allowed to own them by their parents, others are rather annoyes by the titles … I think one has to be Amercian for understanding this fuzz.

A point of criticizm (as far as I can judge by now) is the brief history of knitting: the author neglects that knitting was once ago a rather male occupation (a bit like woodchopping), but never mind: it Is a very nice and good book, and I dont’ regret I have bought it.

Ich habe mein “Unterwegs”-Projekt, den Wavy-Schal aus der knitty.com heute endlich beendet, so dass ich anfangen kann, den Sockenwolle-Berg abzubauen. Gestrickt ist er in Noro kureyon, und ich finde, dass das zu meinen vielen schwarzen Sachen ganz gut aussehen dürfte. Ein UFO weniger!

Today I finished the wavy scarf (http://knitty.com). It was my “on the road”-project. Now I can start to reduce the huge mountain of sock woll I currently store in my room (besides that, I need socks, autumn and winter can be pretty cold in Hamburg). The wool is Noro kureyon and I think it might look quite good with all the black clothes I wear.

Heute ist meine Kiste mit der Sockenwolle kaputt gegangen (es war ein einfacher Karton), und ich habe gemerkt, wie viel Sockenwolle ich wirklich herumliegen habe. Also werde ich mich nach und nach daran machen, die Sockenwolle zumindest zu reduzieren, indem ich Socken als meine nächsten Unterwegs-Projekte vormerke (wenn der Wavy-Schal fertig ist…).

Außerdem habe ich einen hübschen flachen Korb geräumt, um dort meine WIPs unterzubringen, nebst benötigtem Material und sonstigen Utensilien. Da er nicht so groß ist, werde ich mich zwangsläufig beschränken müssen, was mir sicherlich gut tut, da ich sonst vor lauter UFOs und WIPs nicht mehr weiß, wo mir der Kopf s

Nachdem ich das Rückenteil des “Raspy”-Pullovers heute beendet habe und feststellte, dass ich den ganz dringend bei 60 Grad plus Trockner werden schrumpfen lassen müssen (wie es auch in der Anleitung steht), wende ich mich zwischenzeitlich dem ersten Paar der “Kernow Memorial Socks” zu. Alle Mitreisenden (außer mir noch zwei) werden ein Paar erhalten, in den cornischen Landesfarben. Das Muster habe ich heute entworfen, ich bin gespannt, wie es aussieht. Sobald ich ein Paar fertig habe, werde ich das nächste Raspy-Teil stricken, dann wieder Socken etc.

Und der Ragna wäre auch noch zu nähen…

After finishing the back of the “Raspy”-Sweater, I found out that I have to follow the directions properly, as given in the booklet: I will have to shrink it in the washing machine plus tumble dry because it is HUGE!
I’ve put it aside for some days because I will start with the first of three pairs of my “Kernow memorial socks”. It is my first knitting design (after always following some instructions) and will be executed in cornish national colours. After finishing the first pair I will go back to Raspy and start with the front. I hope this makes sure I will not be bored to death while knitting three similar pairs of socks, two in size 42 and one in size 47!

And Ragna is still somewhat looking at me and waits to be sewn…

Wie viele Strickbücher und Strickzeitschriften braucht man? Ein paar wenige, und wenn man die abgearbeitet hat, dann kann man sich was Neues kaufen? Oder massenhaft, immer schön zum Schmökern – auch wenn man daraus gar nichts nacharbeitet? Oder geht es auch ohne, denn das Internet und die Mailinglisten bieten genug Strickfutter?

Das ist für mich nicht ganz einfach zu beantworten. Ich versuche, einen Mittelweg zu gehen. Mailinglisten und Internet können eine Quelle sein, doch sind mir viele Sachen darin zu uninspiriert. Außerdem bin ich eine echte Bücherliebhaberin. Besondere Bücher leiste ich mir, wenn ich zumindest plane, etwas daraus nachzuarbeiten. Ob das jedes Mal klappt, mag mal dahingestellt bleiben – meine To-Do-Liste ist bereits jetzt endlos. Ich blättere aber auch nur so in den schönsten Büchern, um mir Inspirationen zu holen.

So, jetzt bin ich auch geistig wieder halbwegs da. Die Reise nach Cornwall war toll, ich bin begeistert. Es ist ein phantastisches Land. Obwohl ich einen sehr aktiven Urlaub hatte, habe ich es tatsächlich geschafft, das Vorderteil des “Raspy” fast fertigzustellen. (Siehe Bild) Das Warten auf Busse in abgelegenen Dörfern macht es möglich *g*.

Ich habe sogar zwei Strickbücher aufgetrieben, die es in einem kleinen, verkramten Handarbeitsladen in Penzance gab: eine Anleitung zum Stricken von Fischerpullovern (Knitting Ganseys) und eine echte Rarität: eine Sammlung authentischer Muster cornischer Fischerpullover, die nach alten Fotografieren erstellt wurde. Nun bin ich wild entschlossen, mir einen original cornischen Guernsey zu stricken, natürlich in Marine.
Außerdem bin ich dabei, die “Kernow Memorial Socks” zu entwerfen, die alle Mitreisenden (d.h. meinen Freund, meine Mutter und mich) an diese Reise erinnern sollen.

Ansonsten wartet hier “Ragna” (Stricken mit Wikinger-Mustern von Elsebeth Lavold) auf mich, der zusammengenäht und mit einem Halsausschnitt versehen werden will. Und natürlich meine Wollberge.

I am really proud of me because I managed to get the back of the “Raspy” sweater almost finished, although I had a rather active holiday in Cornwall, with hiking and visiting rather remote places which can only be reached after endless bus drives and long walks. It is a wonderful country and I enjoyed my holiday over there really. I think I will have difficulties to get back to my normal life here in Hamburg.

I was amazed when I found two knitting books in a cute little shop in Penzance. Not the ones I planned to buy (the two Stitch-and-Bitch-books, which I can get over here anyway), but one about planning and executing ganseys (fishermens’ sweaters) and one very rare book about genuine cornish guernsey patterns. They were reconstructed from old photographs since this art was completely forgotten in cornwall.
I decided to knit a genuine gansey (of course in navy) from this book. Besides that I will do three pairs of “Kernow Memorial Socks” for my fellow travellers and me.

Here the Ragna sweater (from the Wiking Patterns book by E. Lavold) waits for me (sewing an knitting the neckline), as well as Raspy and mountains of wool.

After I came back from my journey to Cornwall just some minutes ago, I am really tired but happy – it was a wonderful time over there. I even managed to proceed with my “Raspy”-project (Rowan Denim), the back is almost finished. Knitting is great if you have to wait for busses in the middle of nowhere.
